Leading aerospace engineer and Mars Society President Dr. Robert Zubrin has a dream. He wants to get humans to the planet Mars in the next ten years.
Now, with the advent of a revolutionary plan, Mars Direct, Zubrin shows how we can use present day technology and natural resources on Mars to make human settlement possible. But can he win over the skeptics at NASA and the wider world?
The Mars Underground is a landmark documentary that follows Zubrin and his team as they try to bring this incredible dream to life. Through spellbinding animation, the film takes us on a daring first journey to the Red Planet and envisions a future Mars teeming with life and terraformed into a blue world.
A must-see experience for anyone concerned for our global future and the triumph of the human spirit.
"This film captures the spirit of Mars pioneers who refuse to let their dreams be put on hold by a slumbering space program. Their passionate urge to walk the soil of an alien world is infectious and inspirational. This film is the manifesto of the new space revolution." James Cameron - Director of "Avatar"

    Transcription 1st ACT:
    ASTRONAUT:
Accessing disconnect. Enable on. Copy that E.L. Com. All systems are go for entry, decent, and landing. Stand by. Stand by.
    ASTRONAUT:
We are looking fine, flight. Data is good.
    NARRATOR:
At the dawn of the 21st Century, space agencies in Europe and
America began making plans to land the first humans on Mars.
But manned missions to the red planet have been proposed before.
For some, Mars holds the answers to mankind’s future in space.
Others say Mars is too far, too dangerous and too expensive for
    humans to explore.
And in a world torn by troubles, some say there is no need or will
for mankind to reach into space anymore.
More than 30 years after the last Apollo astronaut walked on the
moon, the American-manned space program seems to have lost its
way, unable to reach beyond even low-earth orbit.
    DR. ROBERT ZUBRIN:
We’ve got a problem, NASA has been literally going around in
circles with the space program for the past 30 years.
    NARRATOR:
Astronautically engineer, Dr. Robert Zubrin, has been arguing for
years that sending humans to Mars is the mission the space
    program needs.
    ZUBRIN:
It’s time that we set goals for NASA that were worthy of the risks
of the human space flight. Mars is the next logical step in our space
program image. It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face
for the past 30 years. It’s the planet that’s most like the earth, it’s
the planet that has on it the resources needed to support life and
therefore some day technological civilization. It’s the planet that
will provide us with the answer as to whether life is prevalent in
the universe or exclusive to the earth.
And it’s the planet that will give us the critical tests as to whether
humanity, can breakout out of the planet of our birth and become a
    space-faring species.
    NARRATOR:
In the early 1990s, Zubrin was the head of the Mars Direct
program at Martin Marietta Astronautics. His team developed a
mission to Mars that could be done at the fraction of Nasa’s
    projected costs.
Using only existing technology Zubrin argues that the first steps on
Martian soil could be made within 10 years.
    ZUBRIN:
There is absolutely nothing in this that is beyond our technology.
    DR. EDWARD WEILER:
We are not ready to send humans to Mars right now. We don’t
know how to keep them alive. There are people out there who say
we can go to Mars tomorrow. One of my requirements, one of
NASA’s requirements is that if we send humans to Mars we bring
    them back alive.
    NARRATOR:
For the past 15-years Zubrin and his colleagues have waged a
campaign to convince society and the political class that humans
on Mars should be the goal for NASA now.
This is the story of our cold neighboring planet and the debate over
whether man’s fate it tied to the red world. It’s the story of an
engineer’s journey - and the battle of ideas over which direction in
    space will truly benefit mankind.
    ZUBRIN:
We’re at a crossroads today. We either muster the courage to go or
we risk the possibility of stagnation and decay.

This is 2021 and Dr. Zubrin is 69 years old. For all that he has done to inspire people and NASA to go to mars, I dearly hope he gets to view the first human landing on mars before he dies. I have a lot of respect for him.

It is the 3rd of August 2022 and we still haven't sent humans to Mars, so the 2018 and 2020 predictions were a little too optimistic. However, I still believe that we should go to Mars and it will be done within my lifetime. I've always been in awe at the vastness of space and how much is still out there for us to explore. I really enjoyed this documentary and I'm excited about the possibilities in our future!

One of my favorite books as a Young child, A World of Wonder Book, was of the Sputnik. At the age of 6, when it was scheduled to fly over my area of California my Dad took all of the kids up into the East Bay hills and we waited along with my Mom. Then IT happened, as though it was flying over head just for us. It was a beautifully clear night and from left to right as if drawn across the blue/black night - studded with stars. Sputnik made it's way. Everyone fell silent....except for my and forever stupid big brother. But he didn't ruin the absolute MAGIC of the moment. From that moment on, I was hooked on space, The American Space Agency later to be NASA.

Robert Zubrin, your knowledge and Passion is totally infectious, and its no wonder NASA is threatened by this. I am totally inspired by your vision and drive, and thank God there are people of your calibre still pushing the envelope of exploration and potential colonisation of other worlds. Such Refreshing Perspectives are sorely needed these days along with realistic ideas and answers to solving the overpopulation of this poor plundered Earth. People can adapt to almost any environment like you say. If safety gets any more out of control no one will leave their houses any more. Everything requires an element of risk just find people who are prepared to take it, a Mission to Mars comprised of Big Wave Surfers, Front line Soldiers, and Smokers who will reduce their risk of cancer by embarking on such an undertaking..!! that statement was pure Gold. Thank you Robert!.

'There were problems in Spain in 1492, and there still are.'
'The choices are we either die or grow: I think we should grow.' Its what that arrogant man said. Comparing travels and journeys on the grounds of the Earth with...Space? Its like saying 'since I can play ping pong, I can be the greatest MMA fighter also.' Or, just because one can create a sand castle, doesn't mean they can create the worlds tallest/highest sky scraper. Comparing the seamen of the "age of discovery" with traveling to Mars is a very, very childish and stupid thought.
It matters not. All scientists know that God exists. That the Bible is Gods Word. They know this because the Bible has been proven accurate and fact time after time. They know this because something can't come from nothing. The life of a single molecule requires extensive, astronomical, consistent and precise conditioning or calculations for it to survive from one stage to another. Atoms, cells, carbon, living in the condition "scientists" say the universe first was, or the Earth, would have been impossible for them to have survived and multiply. Instead of making changes to live, the conditions of time and space would have destroyed any molecule, any atom, any cell, from evolving. The precise timing and positioning of everything that happens in the living cell, in DNA, the atom, etc., demands prefect steps, steps which must happen in the millions times millions, and EACH of these steps must be precise and perfectly calculated in order for another molecule, atom, cell, to make it. Every amino acid Must fit perfectly, it must come at the perfect time, must be the correct, and must be specific.
Mathematics says that in order for evolution to have happened, it would have had to beaten the laws or probability, the law of causability, reason, logic and wisdom. And, math itself. Math denies evolution billions of times over the point where something is impossible. There is no chance for it to have happened. Math is the only none bias and none prejudice science, its always by the numbers. Its always consistent, accurate, all calculations and problems will have the same answer regardless of where one is in the world.
"God expands the heavens" and he "is expanding the heavens" says the Bible, and true, Good science, supports the fact that the cosmos is expanding. This Is But ONE of the many examples proving the Bible is Gods Word.
The Great Tribulation is coming. Soon. Most prophesies have been fulfilled. Some we are living (regarding "the last days"). Not many more remain. Its coming, and only the meek, the ones who truly have faith, who believe God is the all mighty, that Jesus (who came to Earth some 2,000 years ago) is His Son (Not equals or one and the same), that Satan and his demons are misleading the majority on this planet, that prayers Must be given to God--in Jesus' name (not to Mary, Paul, Benedict, etc), and that Gods name Must be used all the time, in every prayer and every form of worship to God, and those who try and try and mostly overall accomplish staying away from violence and crime, war, politics, false religion, none marital sex, lies, theft, harassment, worshiping idols, partaking in "holidays"/pagan rituals, will make it pass the Great Tribulation. Likely, most who chose to embrace anything that is bad even after hearing the good news of Gods Kingdom, will pass away in death.
Peace everyone. There is still time to humble yourselves, seek Gods True people on Earth, and find the true and living God, the God who's promised an everlasting life on a paradise Earth to come.

One crucial point which was not mentioned when describing possible terra forming of the planet Mars, is the fact that Mars has lost its magnetosphere. Though faint isolated pockets do exist and it would be most prudent to set up bases within these isolated pockets, any atmosphere created would simply be blown out into space by solar winds. It seems more reasonable to first and foremost resuscitate plate tectonics in order to (1) warm the planet from the inside out and (2) to set into motion a global static charge in order to bolster the magnetosphere. Then once the magnetosphere is robust enough to shield the entire planet from solar wind and radiation, the process of creating an atmosphere can begin.

    • @Radiusproductions
      @Radiusproductions  9 лет назад +13

Ron Bohlouli Admittedly, the lack of a magnetic field should have been explored more in the film when it comes to settling the planet. However, there are many counter measures that can be taken to mitigate the effects of solar radiation. Having to generate plate tectonics - something probably impossible - is not necessary.
Also, it would take millennia for the solar winds to blow the atmosphere out into space. If we could generate an atmosphere, certainly we could replenish it slowly over thousands of years.
Of course, with a thick terraformed atmosphere, the radiation dose would be reduced many factors more: “Mars' thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide would block a good deal of the incoming UV radiation, but carbon dioxide does not significantly block UV radiation in the 190 nm to 300 nm range. Current UV flux on Mars is about 6 Watts per square meter, which would be enough to kill most organisms. The plan here would be to introduce highly UV resistant lifeforms, such as lichen, directly on the surface or to grow cyanobacteria in soil which would protect the organisms from UV, and in mats on the newly formed seas, with layers of dead cells protecting the living cells beneath. These organisms would release oxygen which would slowly build to breathable levels and would form ozone in the upper atmosphere, which would reduce the harmful 190-300 nm UV flux. These organisms would also provide nutrients to help build the Martian soil up to the point where it could support more complex plants.”*Jason Shankel: *@5868115

    • @Nozerone
      @Nozerone 9 лет назад +7

Ron Bohlouli You wouldn't resuscitate plate tectonics. To get the magnetic field going stronger, you need to have the core of the planet spinning. The planet does have magnetic field, be it very weak, so we know there is an iron enriched core in the center. To get it stronger, the core needs to spin faster.
As Blue Mars said, it takes thousands of years for the solar wind to blow away an atmosphere. Even if we could get the atmosphere on mars to return in 200 years, we would have the technology to keep the atmosphere on Mars sustained, even as the solar winds blow it away. It would be much cheaper, easier, and more plausible to do than trying to figure out how to get the core of a planet to spin faster.
At the same time though, due to the lack of an magnetic field protecting the planet. Chances are all the people on Mars would live in protective habitats, and not out in the open. Any technology that could jump start a planet's core into producing a more powerful magnetic field is far, FAR past our lifetimes. By the time it is invented, we will probably end up using it on a different planet instead.

    • @ronbohlouli1
      @ronbohlouli1 9 лет назад +6

I believe it is feasible to capture a number of celestial bodies and navigate them into a fixed orbit around Mars.
This in essence is creating a moon for Mars. Which in time will set into motion plate tectonics and the spinning of the core.

    • @Nozerone
      @Nozerone 9 лет назад +4

Ron Bohlouli That would be possible to do. How ever the new moon would have to be very large. Large enough that it pulls on the planet enough to distort it more than the moon does to earth. For a moon to get the core spinning, it would need to have enough gravity so the planet distorts enough to heat up. You would basically need a moon large enough that it might actually be considered a dwarf planet. Even then that might not be big enough. For an effect like that, you might actually need to do it the other way around and make Mars a moon of a larger planet. No clue how big the planet, or object would have to be, but I'm willing to bet that it would have to be much larger than a moon, and I'm willing to also bet not even Earth would be big enough. Leaving only the gas giants, and those are to far out to even bother trying.
Regardless of the size though. The effects wouldn't be instantaneous. You could easily be looking at hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years before seeing any noticeable effect. Keep in mind that planet tectonics work, and move over millions of years, same would go if you tried to artificially speed up the core by using natural methods, such as bringing in another body with more gravity. Not to mention it would still be much easier, and more effective to just terraform, and artificially sustain an atmosphere while living in protective structures. Working on a technology that could heat up a planet's core, and get it spinning better would also be much easier than trying to move a large enough body into orbit for the same outcome.
Lastly, plate tectonics are on the surface of a planet. To get the tectonics moving again, you need to heat up the interior of the planet first. You're not trying to revive tectonics, you're trying to revive the planet. It's the center of the planet, its core that you want to focus on, not the tectonic plates. Those are just a by-product of having a planetary center like Earth's.

It's a nice fantasy film, but only a fantasy. There's always the budget problem looming large. No one wants to fund something if they're not getting anything of value back. What NASA needs to do is to lie and say they've discovered gold or diamonds on Mars. Once humanity hears something like that, there will be a gold rush to settle Mars. If there's one thing that sets the human exploration juices flowing and that's greed. Space agencies from all over Earth will be sending all sorts of vehicles to Mars in order to stake their claims.
Anyway, I definitely enjoyed the film and if I were 50 years younger I might actually get excited. Now I only see how politicians can easily cut program funding because they have interests in things other than space exploration. I saw how 30 years have gone by with no manned lunar landings and no moon colonies. Countless billions of galaxies and countless trillions of stars to explore and we've barely been on the moon. Bummer. Old age can really sap one's hopes away. I'll still be cheering if we really do get a manned vehicle on Mars. I with them the best of luck.

I don't think I've ever been as fascinated by anything as much as I am with this information in this video! One thing I kept thinking during the last third or so was if it's possible that there's life underground? I know that we have a few species that hibernate underground during the severe drought seasons in other countries for months at a time; so what if Mars has life capable of hibernating - or even living underground for centuries? If there's water buried deep, I don't see that it would be impossible. Especially if there's more than one species.
As far as all of the nea-sayers, why don't they just sit down and solve each issue that they have, rather than just saying it's impossible because of reasons A, B, & C? It boggles my mind that some people can be so egotistical that they'd actually prevent something as incredible as this because their previous work wouldn't be needed? (I.E. not needing to stop and use the International Space Station) How stupid, arrogant, & egotistical!

JulieBishop SJW much? Chicago is a shithole, though probably not quite as bad as Haiti. Everything he said about Chicago is true. You're also assuming his race, which to an insane leftist moron like you should be an offensive act. You lose your shit if someone calls somebody else a pronoun they don't like, so assuming gender in that case is just awful right? But assuming someone's race, as long as they're white of course, is cool? I don't know why I should expect any kind of consistency from a leftist. You scream about misonongy, rape culture and sexism but you're all about Islam.
Do you feel like you're morally superior now that you attempted to berate the original commenter? Do you feel like you're helping to put an end to hate and racism by using hate and racism? But of course it's not racism if it's against whitey now is it?
Tell me this one thing since I've got your attention, if a group can't be racist because they're in the minority and/or don't have the power to be racist, when white people are not the majority in an area and have no power, can they be racist? Answer me that. I bet you can't because the line of thinking coming from the current left doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
How bout this....when an area begins to "go downhill" as it were and white people leave you call it white flight and say they're racist, but when white people move into an already decayed area and try to improve it, you call it gentrification and say they're racist. The left's ideas about race do not make any sense whatsoever. They have no internal consistency and the methods used to "fix" racism make the situation much worse.
I hope you're face is turning red and steam is pouring from your ears you empty-headed mockingbird.

Something interesting occurred to me about Mars landings. The martian ATMOSPHERE can improve the safety of transports by using hydrogen or helium filled bags to reduce the fuel required for landings just by maintaining a buoyant state for the transport craft. This could provide for long duration overflights for closer inspection of large areas prior to establishing a landing site. Establish orbit > deploy lander > deploy braking parachutes > deploy gas bags for atmospheric operation > deflate to land. Similar to the probes utilized on the Alien planet Darwin 4 program except on a larger scale.

It’s a suicide mission bro. Things go wrong on an airplane they can make an emergency landing at their nearest airport. Things go wrong on a spaceship it’s not as if they have the nearby AutoZone for parts bro! Just the simple job of unscrewing a bolt is impossible in zero gravity. On earth you change a tire by using earth’s gravity as a counterpoint to use your feet to torque the nutts on a bolt. In space to achieve the same PSI to screw or unscrew any engine bolt that needs to be repaired/replaced is impossible. Astronauts are basically campers just Fuckin around and stealing money. Ships docking to other ships takes basically 3 hours. Everything to be done in zero gravity is by many factors more time consuming and difficult than to do on Earth.
The list of things that need to be fixed is in the millions. Artificial gravity is not as simple as spinning some tin can either, every item has mass, when things start spinning, every item inside will force a weight shifting. The center point will be a wobbly mess, and those x,y, z axial loads and forces will vibrate to the rest of the free floating ship. It will tear itself apart. Even in zero gravity items still have their mass. Once a centrifugal forced gravity is introduced, a bowling ball will weigh more than a tennis ball. Everything will force a disruption of the “center point mass” physics apply. Do you know the moon orbiting the Earth causes a center point wobble effect? On a space ship it will be a disaster.

Until man evolves into something better than a capitalist and remedies what "profitable" destruction he wreaks on Earth, he has no right to expend precious resources on manned trips to other planets. Earth has lichens, moss, plants, animals, micro-organisms, ....
Earth is made for life .
      Mars is not.
The American space program is one percent of the federal budget.
The federal budget is 150% of our available revenue.
The space idiocy has produced zero benefits to our nation. Zero!!!!!!
Zubrin thinks Papa Bush was a great president.
That says a lot about his lack of intelligence and common sense.

Its look like, the Space program is kind of political set up.
Support the history was acceptable but the benefit is none, highly risk to comprehend by our technology.
I just remember space shuttle entry failure, was far from its safety, a small error create great sacrifice.
