Does Anybody Care? Central African Republic Battles a Health Care Crisis

Much of the world knows nothing about Central African Republic (CAR). This country receives little media coverage apart from stories focusing on security issues. Having worked in CAR for 25 years, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams have witnessed another crisis-the dire lack of access to health care in many parts of the country.
It is estimated that less than half of the health facilities in CAR are fully functional, and the country has only 0.6 doctors per 10,000 inhabitants-less than half the average across Africa. CAR has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world, at just 54 years. The country's security and economic issues make it difficult for medical care providers and humanitarian organizations to work, but the utter lack of assistance begs the question-does anybody care?
