Catherine, love this video, I grab these anytime I can, any more ideas on what to make, I am addicted to these! Thank for the cutting pliers, didn't know about these. I always depended ony husband to take care of that also. One day, I just soaked these and the paper came all off, no problem.
I found water generally separates the paper/glue from the fabric. I sprinkled water (heavily) on the paper back and let it soak in for a few minutes. Most of the time it peeled right off. I would sprinkle a dozen or so then peel off, then continue to another "batch". If any glue residue is left, you can usually swish the piece(es) in a bowl of water to remove most of it. Kind of messy but I thought it was worth it

I had some beautiful fabric books from a London Designer Nina Campbell and Sanderson of `London and the fabrics are stunning and `I have made many gifts of bags and items with them. The fabric is o substantial and the items come out really well! The bag looks great! Thanks for the tutorial!

Nice lesson! I currently have been gifted 14 5’ bolt rolls, roughly 20 sample books of assorted sizes… trying to store and keep them is going to be the biggest challenge!!!
Another amazing one, It's very difficult for us to find those books in our area - too many creatives battling for dibs. We use all of our scraps in our scrap bin to make a "crumb quilt" that students make bags, shorts, pillows, and all sorts of things. It keeps the scraps from the land fill, keeps them sewing, and they LOVE them when they are done.

Your idea of approaching interior design shops for outdated fabric sample books is awesome! I’ll either be careful with polypropylene or maybe use cotton webbing for straps.

I love this low hassle, relaxed way you have and this helpful tutorial thank you - and wow your fabulous embroidered pocket! So terribly frustrating when something goes wrong right at the end, I hate having to unpick and redo, but sometimes there's no option but grit your teeth and get it sorted haha!

Hi Jacqueline, I really just got lucky! An interior designer donated a bunch of them to my classroom. I've heard some viewers say that they have to pay for them in their area. I'd start with a phone call to a local interior designer and see how it goes!

@@CatherineSews When you showed that melted strap, I FELT that cr*p! Totally reminded me of when I messed up by buying the wrong shrimp on my $100 sushi video.
You need the gap so be able to turn the bag right side out, but you can sew the gap closed any time after you turn the bag out. I tend to wait till the very end just in case I see something that needs to be corrected!
What type/weight of thread do you use to sew upholstery fabric and what machine settings do you use? I am sewing my first bag using upholstery fabric and I'm using a heavier weight thread (Home Decorator), but I am having trouble maintaining an even upper and lower tension using this heavier thread. The thread is mildly looping on the underside of the fabric. Thank you!
Sorry for missing your comment until right now! I used my go-to regular cone thread and standard settings. The decorator fabrics I was using were not heavy enough to require anything special in the needle, thread or settings! If you're getting loops on the bottom, it means your top thread needs more tension. Or, it can also be that your bobbin is not inserted correctly. Flip your bobbin over and try again.

If you didn't want to cut off the part of the fabric where the holes from the staples are you could add some trim or buttons to cover the holes.

Hopefully it works for you! I find with different sample books, it's 50/50! But even if the paper doesn't come off, I still get a nice bag out of it.

I pay 5.00..dollars per book for wallpaper samples with upholstery samples,I think thats ok,🤔

Each of my sheets have a sticky tag on the front and leaves a dreadful little sticky patch when it is removed.
Oh, what a waste! That's too bad. You could try using a product like Goof Off to get the sticky stuff off.
Have you tried orange spray that helps get the sticky off
Would it help to have a pressing cloth ??
Maybe a damp one? To soften the paper? Might be a good thing to try!
