i also struggle with beint consistent with probably everything i have a passion for. i usually go through phases of intense productivity/passion followed by phases where i seem to completely lose interest. your schedule idea seems like it would really help me too, so i'll definitely consider it whenever i feel like making a change. my summer holiday is starting in 2 weeks, in which i'll be getting my first pc setup and that will probably make it hard for me to be productive. however, this might help! thank you kat
0:14 only u could make that moment about coffee "i'm going to wake up at 8 am every morning" i am praaaaayyyyyiiiinnnnng for you girl i hope this experiment goes well! i can't wait to hear about your results
1. WAIT DID KAT JUST COME OUT BECAUSE I'M NOT QUITE SURE AND IF SO THAT IS THE BEST WAY IN THE HISTORY OF BEST WAYS TO COME OUT 2. I totally agree! It's so hard to find inspiration and ideas.
"And THAT part of me is so sick of my shit!" = STORY OF MY LIFE! Ive started literally hundreds of stories but can never finish any of them. I get inspirations out of nowhere and write furiously for hours and days and then thats it, I can never put all the pieces together. For any story idea i never have a clear beginning middle and end, only 1 or 2 of them. SO. FRUSTRATING.
Ugh! Me too! But I am going to try to do Camp Nano next month! Maybe we could have a cabin together. (Not a real cabin. You can sign up for Camp Nano on the camp nano website and see what I mean.
I've have the same problem for YEARS! one thing I think I've figured out is that I alwayyyys would start these huge novels that I would get bored of along the way and I think that's kind of a sign I'm not ready to write a full-length novel so I'm attempting short stories until I am haha
Emily YES! I actually started writing fanfiction a few months ago to try and combat this problem haha bc that way im only writing an individual scene and after a few pages its a fully formulated piece. So far ive only written Malec fanfiction from shadowhunters haha 😁. Its really helping tho! Once i get the right story idea i think eventually ill be able to do a full length novel, it just hasnt come to me yet
1. was.... was that Kat coming out??? OKAY 2. I'm with you searching for writing inspiration! I wish I had the ability and time to treat my writing like a full time job. But I'm just not in that place financially. So that makes it pretty difficult to commit. But hey i mean i published a book so it's possible. Maybe I just need to buckle down and do it and come up with a schedule like this that will work around my work hours.

Oh my god, okay I know the video is about productivity, but did you just... come out? If we are correct, then that was such a smart way to do it! You go girl!
7 лет назад+5
And I completely agree with you!! I also feel like I can do so much more, so let's actually try! Good luck, Kat! You got this!
I love how you're like "I'm so lazy lol" and then like five seconds later you're like "I'm gonna stick to this super strict schedule and have no problems whatsoever" and here I am like "I could barely do that for a day."
Girl I feel your struggles with motivation and commitment. I think being such a natural procrastinator having some sort of (official) deadline is what I need but I can't seem to do it if this so-called deadline came from me (I don't know if that made sense). This video is really inspirational for me so thank you!
Well, she did post a pic of lgtbq+ books on her instagram around the same time she uploaded this (it's actually right behind her in this vid lol)...and she choose a mug with TWO hearts on it. IS KAT TRYING TO SEND US A CRYPTIC MESSAGE?!? (i'm sorry, as a Sherlock fan I tend overanalyze everything) Anywho, I'm taking on the challenge too! #GETYOUR^&*$TOGETHERWITHKAT
I have found that what works a lot for me (might not for everyone, but if someone is looking for ideas ^^) is to make clear, simple objectives for the day like "write 1000 words" or "learn this chapter" (even if you write down a lot of small goals - sometimes i have like 20), because at the end of the day it gives you a sense of accomplishment and a reward (as opposed to just saying "i have to work btw 9 and 12" which doesn't do me much good, but great if that works for you).
For anyone having a hard time focusing on writing and giving in to distractions, I suggest you try Cold Turkey Writer. It basically blocks access to all other programs until you write for a given amount of time or you write a certain number of words. I've found that it helped me a lot whenever I had 'motivation' problems (which were all caused by more interesting alternatives to writing).
"I give into the laziness." Oh yeah, I completely get this! As soon as I finished university and I had no set schedule I gave into all the laziness and now I'm trying to slowly work my way out of it by setting a loose schedule and hopefully building up to something better.
This video really spoke to me on a personal level. A friend of mine was telling me I should schedule myself over the next few weeks for job hunting, so I don't make up dumb excuses and fail to dedicate a decent amount of time to it. She had a point, but I thought the structure would just frustrate me when I'm already not in the best place mentally, but honestly, she was right. I also am too content with where I am and not doing enough to be better, but I want to change that, and more importantly, I NEED to change that.
I love the fact that you mentioned how you struggle with trying because you're terrified with failing. I related to this a lot, because I usually feel like I'm not living up to my potential, or I give in to laziness because I'm afraid to both, failure and success. I'm so glad you posted this video, it was unexpectedly motivational :) I hope your week goes amazing
This video is the definition of me mid august 2016. That 1 week I decided to keep writing everyday, I wrote 50 pages of continuous material, which I had never done before, and then the school semester started and I only wrote here and there and during winter break and spring break and come 10 months later, I am now working on my second draft and querying agents. I have the same liberty of laziness as you, and I was done with that. I've given in to it for too long. I also only used to write when passion struck, but I had to make myself write even when I didn't feel so thrown into the world I wrote, and that was okay because when I finished the entire first draft I at least had the book and now I could go back and make edits and revisions and sometimes just entirely rewrite chapter if needed when I was feeling the passion. The thing is if you just wait for passionate moments you'll never get anything done, or it will take way too long. And honestly sometimes just pushing yourself to write when you don't feel like it can actually move you into that passionate place. As I see it now the primary goal when writing a first draft is not to write the product you will sell so it doesn't have to be anywhere near perfect, the goal is just to finish it so you can look at the shape and then you can work on molding it as close to perfection as you can get it (which no piece of writing is ever perfect I had to stop going crazy about picking every perfect word, somewhat). Anyways, good luck, hope you have a really productive week!
I relate so much to this video, what with the whole creativity motivating you to be furiously productive for a short period of time vs. a complete lack of ideas and motivation at all other times
I support this decision 100%. You are an independent person, struggle with the want for structure, I do as well, and I think that having this "day job" will prove to you how productivity vs. passion is a good balance to have.
I think a schedule would work really well for me but I need to create one and stick to it and that is the hardest part for me! I am good at coming up with ideas for projects and starting them but I always find myself bad at finishing them in a satisfactory manner!
The relatability in this video is so high. I also struggle with getting motivated to write, or even getting out of bed. I loved this video, and I wish you the best of luck with the new schedule. The most relatable thing is that I go both ways, but I'm not talking about drinks.
The entire video, I was nodding along thinking "Preach it woman!" I applaud you for even your semi-strong backbone; I cannot even seem to keep a schedule together for a week, let alone a month like nanowrimo. Especially when it comes to early mornings, and by that I mean before 11:00am. I hope you do well, because it will give me hope that I can somehow develop any sort of work ethic imaginable, even a terrible one. Great video!
Oh, gosh! The struggle to find balance is real! I have to admit, I don't understand the pantser way of life. I'm more like Ray Bradbury in the sense that I love writing, but I see it as a job. I'm a plotter and I tend to be a little too focused at times, to the point of obsession - which isn't good for me. I'll be the crazy person who will write for 8 hours straight - without pausing to eat - for a month to write a first draft. So, this year I'm trying to find balance as well and it's been complicated, let's put it this way. I wish you all the luck in the world, Kat! I feel your pain, girl!
Not to mansplain, but there's a lot to be said for being proud of the effort you put in, rather than the goals you reach. In spite of what targets you hit, feel proud for putting the effort in! You've inspired me to write a schedule for the week too, and I'm going to make myself accountable by publishing it too 😄
Kat, I think it's so great that you're experimenting with new methods. It's so hard for me to set up a writing schedule that works, especially when there's so many other things to waste my time on. I am 1000% a night owl but I get up at 5.30 am to write before work and even on weekends, because it's what my schedule allows. And some days I'm not so good at it, but I force myself to sit at my desk, and sometimes muscle memory kicks in when I'm there. And if nothing else the experiment will show you what doesn't work, at least for right now. I really hope you can figure something out that will help you stay productive!
I completely agree with what you said in the video, I find it easier to write when I'm passionate. For me, I can commit when it's short term but when it's long term I find it difficult.
Totally with you about needing a structure. After a semester worth of 5 day a week studying from 8 to 5, being in clinic every other day - the summer break was a struggle (I live in Australia. Lol we are in Winter right now :D). There was nothing to do. Like nothing that require me to run around, grab things, do something that I can see a result of - so the schedule thing will be great! If it gets hard, just get dressed and get out of the house and 'work'. I find that a change in scenery works really good! Best wishes :)
I relate so much to this topic! I love writing but I usually only write during the summer because it's off-season at my job. Since I'm a huge Jane the Virgin fan, I recently decided to schedule everything, just like Jane. I've been reading and writing, and having a lot more me-time, which is so awesome! I like the schedule you've made. Since you're just starting this, you might want to incorporate breaks into it. Maybe follow actor rules: 5 minute break after 55 minutes or a 10 minute break after 80 minutes. For positive reinforcements: allow yourself another cup of coffee after you've written at least 300 words. Things like that are usually helpful. Oh, and of course, shut off your internet while you're writing.
I feel ya, girl. I used to be very good with commitment and productivity, but freedom and lack of obligations makes me so lazy and scared. And I can also only do something intensly for a short period of time. Ugh I have to change! Good luck to us.💜
i have a lot of issues with consistency as well...and i fall into the trap where i think that something is only creative and special when it's spontaneous. then i use that as an excuse for why I don't keep a schedule or organize my time or EVER DO ANYTHING THAT I AM SUPPOSED TO. not good. not good at all. you've kind of inspired me to do the same next week (although accounting for school in my case...) I haven't worked on my writing in way too long (half a year i think?? shit) and i haven't started studying for finals. woops. THANKS FOR BEING INSPIRATIONAL AS ALWAYS, KAT. good luck with your schedule next week!!
This resonated with me sooo much! I feel like being too comfortable is probably my problem with laziness. I do so much better with a schedule, but with it being summer, my schedule is no more. I also feel like I should be able to treat myself. "You just graduated high school, its fine to take a few days off!" While this might be true, it's not true after a month. I have only accomplished one thing out of five that I set out to do in the first week of summer and it really frustrates me. Also having a part time job that has an unpredictable schedule doesn't help. I'll try to take it one day at a time, but then I'll try to plan everything out for a month. I kept a bullet journal for maybe a couple days? But I definitely like the idea of treating writing like it's a job. I think it might try it! Thanks so much for the inspiration! Good luck! 😄
My husband does the schedule thing and he's a working author. It makes a huge difference on how he feels and how much he gets done. I am super excited for your experiment and it's outcome! Go girl!
great video! my personal secret to productivity is an early wake and no wasting my first hours on social media.. books are fine, tidying up is ok... but social media... they are the worst! good luck with your week, hope it's going on just fine.
I love the idea of treating writing like a job. I'm thinking of trying this over the summer but doing it the same hours that I would usually be at school, since I'm usually pretty good about working during school. Thanks for the idea! ☺️
Absolutely great video. Honest and probably a pretty good path you've chosen. Your thinking makes perfect sense to me. I went through a similar struggle and have chosen the constant hard work plan.
Somewhat off topic, but I have found that having to keep a schedule really helps improve my mental health. If I wake up and exercise or go to school/work I feel a lot better than on days I just sit around doing nothing. I definitely feel more depressed on days I don't do anything. Sorry that was kind of long, but I hope keeping a schedule helps you feel better. It has worked for me. :)
YOU'VE GOT THIS. & I love this idea so much, I lack structure in the same way and there's always that really driven part of me that is so sick of my lazy habits. GODSPEED with your experiment
Omg so much this. I can't be consistent with anything over a long period, no matter how much I feel like I want it. I'm trying to write whilst also working full time and I'm struggling so much. I'm supposed to be learning how to code too and just have no brain left after work to do it. I just want to cuddle my ferrets and watch youtube when I get home argh! Structuring your day sounds like a sensible thing to do, I hope it goes well lovely!
I love these type of videos from you! They're so honest and open its very refreshing. I'd rather have these rambly discussions then you faking it and not being truly happy. ILY girl!!!
sounds like an awesome schedule! maybe a walk for 30 minutes or an hour in the evening to wind down and digest the day and plan for the next? i always like a walk to clear everything out and start new. i adore your personality!
Oh my goodness Kat I'm the same way! I have been doing this online class and during the regular school year I had a clear schedule and work to be done and I was consistent. But now during the summer I am giving into my laziness. This video was great, I love your discussions!!!
I am a very routine based person. If I didn't have another job I would write Monday thru Friday from 8 to 1, because that is the only time in my day that is not filled with people. I am staring a new writing method myself, although I am focusing on writing articles, not stories. I will get back to stories soon, but for now I aim to write a draft a day for three days, covering a single article. The third day will be the final draft and the editing day. If I can manage this I should put out two articles a week with one breather day. Wish me luck on my new endeavor as I will be wishing you luck in yours. Good luck Kat.
I relate to this so much. I'm the literal worst at self motivation. And I'm currently HATING not having a structured schedule in my awkward recent-grad, unemployed, living with my parents place of life. This is why I haven't written anything seriously (other than school essays) in almost a year and I haven't uploaded a video in two months. I think youtube will become easier once I have a structure (and my own space), but writing is SUCH a struggle for me because I seem to get on a writing kick once a year or so. I think I'm going to try the November writing challenge this year. Maybe it'll do me some good. I applaud you on trying to be more productive and wish you luck! ~Lyddie
I feel like I need scheduling too, I procrastinate SO much. If i'm not motivated to do anything i'll push it off until the last minute. Great video ly kat❤️
I and my writing THANK YOU for this video, Kat. I look forward to your discoveries. Thanks for helping me on my writing journey and best wishes on yours! Oh, and Ray Bradbury is pure dark chocolate and sunshine.
I too have been feeling all of this recently. Exacerbated no doubt by the fact that 30 is fast-approaching 💨 I think I may join you on this experiment.
I honestly think having a schedule would be good for me, but I just don't want to do it lol. For me, it's important to put out quality work. So yeah, I may not write for like a month or two in between, but then I have a month or two of passionate, quality stuff, and that's what matters. No point in forcing myself to write a short story a week if they're all shit. Which probably isn't good if you're making a living off of your art, so I completely understand why one would need said schedule. Good luck in your experimenting. (And I had to watch this video twice because I was really shook by the first 20 seconds of this lmao)
Alyssa Cooper I started giving myself a bit of structure by making a checklist of non-specific things I had to do each day (write 100 words minimum, work on a drawing for 10 minutes, outline x chapter, etc). I'd "work" on that checklist on and off from 9 am to 3 pm and see how many things I could get done. And if you do everything, give yourself the next day off. It's helped me get much better at time management while still having room for those big inspiration bursts.
I hope the new schedule works for you! I definitely understand the difficulty of being productive. I'm taking summer classes now and it's so difficult to stay on top of them but I know I need to so I'm determined to complete the courses with the grade I need! Love you! Hoping for maybe one of these next couple of videos to be a cooking with kat vid!
Very thoughtful video. I also have a loot of productivity issues and maybe I should try a scheduling experiment like this too. Also, loving these ramble-y videos!
I love these real talks and honestly I connected a lot with what you were saying and I think I needed to hear that. Thanks for your honesty and good luck with your week! 💜
"i go both ways" IS THIS WHAT I THINK IT IS
i also struggle with beint consistent with probably everything i have a passion for. i usually go through phases of intense productivity/passion followed by phases where i seem to completely lose interest. your schedule idea seems like it would really help me too, so i'll definitely consider it whenever i feel like making a change. my summer holiday is starting in 2 weeks, in which i'll be getting my first pc setup and that will probably make it hard for me to be productive. however, this might help! thank you kat

Force yourself to finish it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's the best feeling. I know what you mean, just force yourself. Writing is a job!!

Wow this video is even more relatable than I thought it was going to be. 10/10 as always
Honestly you said everything that I have been feeling lately
I think you just described life in a nutshell, we are because we crawl forward. Loved this :)

Shoutout to Kat for being awesome! xx
Good luck to us.💜
Love these kind of videos Kat! Please don't ever just feel like you just have to make book hauls and wrap ups because we genuinely enjoy these too!
i have a lot of issues with consistency as well...and i fall into the trap where i think that something is only creative and special when it's spontaneous. then i use that as an excuse for why I don't keep a schedule or organize my time or EVER DO ANYTHING THAT I AM SUPPOSED TO. not good. not good at all. you've kind of inspired me to do the same next week (although accounting for school in my case...) I haven't worked on my writing in way too long (half a year i think?? shit) and i haven't started studying for finals.
I'm the exact same way! so capable of delirious passionate work and always sliding towards inertia
I definitely want to read Zen in the Art of Writing. It sounds like a really good book for writing! 😁
Absolutely great video. Honest and probably a pretty good path you've chosen. Your thinking makes perfect sense to me. I went through a similar struggle and have chosen the constant hard work plan.
you are literally talking to my soul. I feel just like you.
I am the exact same when it comes to comfort and striving for greatness oml
these rambly videos are becoming my favourites!
Your old videos got me back into writing. Thank you!
YOU'VE GOT THIS. & I love this idea so much, I lack structure in the same way and there's always that really driven part of me that is so sick of my lazy habits. GODSPEED with your experiment
KAT I SEE YOU GURL 00:14 👀
I relate to this so hard...I'm intrinsically super lazy and also need some pressure in order to stay motivated. Such a helpful video:)
I have to tell you how excited I was to see this writing video in my que!!!!! 😍😍😍
I love these type of videos from you! They're so honest and open its very refreshing. I'd rather have these rambly discussions then you faking it and not being truly happy. ILY girl!!!
0:14 YASS QUEEN. Did she just come out, or are we reading too much into this?
Emi reading way too much into. She's been doing it for awhile
I honestly love the ramble videos the most. Seriously so relatable.
sounds like an awesome schedule! maybe a walk for 30 minutes or an hour in the evening to wind down and digest the day and plan for the next? i always like a walk to clear everything out and start new. i adore your personality!
You can do it Kat! I believe in you!!!! *encouragement*
"I'm really good at sticking to week-long commitments" -- SAAAAAME. Me in school ALL THE TIME
Oh my goodness Kat I'm the same way! I have been doing this online class and during the regular school year I had a clear schedule and work to be done and I was consistent. But now during the summer I am giving into my laziness. This video was great, I love your discussions!!!
So glad you made this video!!!! Finally someone else who admits to go in into laziness
I'm gonna try with you!
Yayyyyyyyyy. Kat is going to upload everyday.
~Lyddie
I really missed your chatty videos, and the writing related ones. Good luck with the experiment. 💖
I feel like I need scheduling too, I procrastinate SO much. If i'm not motivated to do anything i'll push it off until the last minute. Great video ly kat❤️
I love making new schedules, this one sounds really great!
I'm so hyped for more Kat videos, honestly!
You should vlog this experimental schedule week! It would be really interesting to watch😛
Heck yeah!Ready to enjoy dutifully watching anything and everything that Kat puts on her channel(s)! So excited for this week!!!
I and my writing THANK YOU for this video, Kat. I look forward to your discoveries. Thanks for helping me on my writing journey and best wishes on yours! Oh, and Ray Bradbury is pure dark chocolate and sunshine.
I too have been feeling all of this recently. Exacerbated no doubt by the fact that 30 is fast-approaching 💨
I think I may join you on this experiment.
It's helped me get much better at time management while still having room for those big inspiration bursts.
take it a week at a time, Kat. week 1, yay! let's go for 2, then 3, then a month. you can do it!
I also love these discussion videos! It's a nice addition to your book videos and vlogs!
this is exactly what ive been wanting to do with my writing! i need to try this, thanks Kat!
You got this Kat! Book tube Mom believes in you and is very proud of you!
EARLY SQUAD?! YOU HERE??!! WOOP NEW VIDDD
Yep! ^_^
Good luck Kat! We're supporting you no matter what!
Totally awesome if you were coming out, totally awesome if you weren't. it's nbd.
Kat! I love these types of videos, they feel so personal.
'i go both ways' SAME
I love these real talks and honestly I connected a lot with what you were saying and I think I needed to hear that. Thanks for your honesty and good luck with your week! 💜
You can do anything! Never give up!
I love how real these videos are❤️
