As part of the month-long Calabar Festival, which runs annually from December 1st to January 1st, the Calabar Cultural Carnival stands out as a vibrant one-day celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. On December 26, 2024, this year's event brought together participants from across the nation in a dazzling display of traditions and unity.
Eighteen states of the federation joined the eighteen local government areas of Cross River State to celebrate the carnival’s theme, *“Our Shared Prosperity.”* Each contingent adorned unique costumes and performances that highlighted their cultural heritage, turning the streets of Calabar into a kaleidoscope of color, music, and dance.
The festivities began at Millennium Park, where Governor Prince Bassey Otu officially flagged off the event. In his address, the governor urged participants to seize the opportunity provided by the increased prizes for winners to showcase their creativity and cultural talents.
States such as Adamawa, Kogi, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Niger, Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Osun joined the local government contingents from Cross River in the grand parade. Dignitaries, including members of the National Assembly, state executives, local council chairpersons, and representatives from financial institutions, graced the occasion.
Mr. Gabe Onah, Chairman of the Carnival Commission, highlighted the significance of the cultural carnival as a cornerstone of the state’s tourism efforts. He explained, *“The Calabar Cultural Carnival is more than a celebration; it’s a platform to market our state’s tourism potential. This year’s theme, ‘Our Shared Prosperity,’ reflects the essence of Cross Riverians-our culture, hospitality, and community spirit.”*
Participants showcased their heritage along designated carnival routes, stopping at three assessment points to perform in line with the theme. The one-day event underscored the cultural wealth of Nigeria while contributing to the broader Calabar Festival’s reputation as one of Africa’s most iconic cultural showcases.
