My mother was one of the children (the little girl with braids and the pink and white checkered dress). She became a professional pianist. She was eight years old when this film was made. The piano scene took about two weeks to film. Jose Iturbi was a very kind man. He invited the children into his dressing room and showed them how to make paper airplanes.
That’s so amazing! I just watched Iturbi in Three Daring Daughters and wanted to see what else he had been in. Your mother certainly had talent in this scene, as did all of those students 🤩
My dad was the skinny kid in the cream colored, short sleeved shirt with horizontal stripes. He was 17 years old when this was filmed. He never became a professional musician, but he did teach me how to play the piano. He earned his PhD degree in physics at Stanford University and became a scientist/engineer/inventor here in the silicon valley. He was best known for his work on atomic cesium clocks. He passed away in 2006.
My grandmother was a friend of Mr. Iturbi's. Whenever he'd come to Independence, MO to play, he'd always get in touch with her to let her know and to get her seats to his concerts. She's told me countless stories of him, She has photo albums full of pictures of them together, as well as letters from Mr. Iturbi. She has a card from his two granddaughters sent her when he passed away, thanking her for her condolences. I even have a letter from him that he sent her congratulating her on my birth. I've seen all his movies (thanks to her), and I'm just in awe of his genius.
+Tracy G oh, seriously, a friend... what an amazing honour... he is my favourite pianist of all time. My grt aunt was a concert pianist and her brother, my GF was an opera singer... I so enjoy such moving music.

Hard to believe that all those young pianists synchronoze so well, but it could be so with such a brilliant musician as Iturbi directing them. What an astonishing talent he had!
Jose is an excellent piano player. Great music, great film, I love Kathryn Grayson's singing, the Jerry Mouse and Gene Kelly scene is great, and many 1930s and 1940s films are fabulous
He was a real patriot also. Anchors Aweigh was a recruiting movie for the US Navy. Kathryn Grayson also has a great voice and the beauty to go with it.
This was the first classic music I heard and saw as a little girl and I was enthusiastic then as I am now. It has brought tears to my eyes. Of course I enjoyed the whole Anchors Aweigh.
love this song, if u watch marx brothers movie night in casablanca, harpo plays this on a harp. And in who framed roger rabbit daffy and donald play it also
I loved the classical music in this picture.Frank Sinatra Sr. put me to sleep when he sang lullaby.MgM did ask Walt Disney to put Mickey Mouse in the picture. But, Mr. Walt said no.I bet you that he is sorry now.So, they couldn't get Mickey, they got Jerry. It is adorable. And I love Gene Kelly how he dances. A professional.
My first thought after seeing him in Anchors Aweigh is why was he not famous like Frank Sinatra or Gene Kelly? He was such an amazing and gifted pianist like what the actual fuck.
Not new interest mate, I know of a few young ones besides myself that also watched his performances in Anchors Aweigh when we were 10, 11, 12, and never forgot. And this was in the late last century :)
I just sat through this endless, creaking farrago in which a certain Mr Jose Iturbi overplayed several cliched pieces from the concert piano repertoire, and fell for the awe in which the film and his co-stars appeared to hold him. Even the usually reliable and relaxed Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly were infected by the sheer awfulness of the script and direction, and mugged their way through the picture's five hours. [well, it seemed like five hours. . .] They certainly don't make 'em like that any more. Thank God. . .

So this was the inspiration for the 84 baby grand pianos- RHAPSODY IN BLUE section at the LA 1984 Opening Ceremony.

Inspiration for that famous Tom and Jerry cartoon!
Excellent. Some of the players are children.

i wonder what became of all those young pianists.
Are there 20 Steinways onstage?
I'm the son of one of them....
@@alexisvan222 which one? can you show a timestamp?
@@generalgrievous3731 see below
Were all these young pianists actually playing for this scene.
My mother was eight years old when she played (checkered dress/pigtails) here.
This must be quite fun for young students
Laprimera vez que escuche la Rapshodia. Le g7staban.los miños ?

Out of place in the movie, but super entertaining anyway.
