  • Yeah, it can be a toxic debate but the topic of keyboards needs to be discussed. Full sized keyboards DO hold advantages over smaller, more compact varieties like TKL. But are those features enough for you?

    its amazing how a keyboard that takes less materials, less key switches, less key caps, less LED's. SOMEHOW costs more than a keyboard that has more.

    • @MJNGaming1
      @MJNGaming1 5 лет назад +10

      It's pretty easy to explain it's production setup cost that normally is devided between the volume of production it's called "full-costing" or absorption costing :) it explains why even few materiel can make product cost more :) it's simply all the indirect cost that is followed by having to different produktion setup

    • @MJNGaming1
      @MJNGaming1 5 лет назад +1

      The less isn't always = lower price/production cost. Cost normally chance depending of how simplified or complicated the production is between the two products :)

    • @MJNGaming1
      @MJNGaming1 5 лет назад +1

      If full size sells more they can take avantage of economy of scale that decrease the production cost :) 10 keys less isn't that populair because it's not standard therefore more expensive to produce :)

    There is no competition for "superiority" between these two keyboards. Every advantage he just said can be subjective. There can never be a debate on these two because the pros and cons are subjective to the user. Just use what suits you. End of story.

      yeah, until TKL becomes a default choice and manufacturers start ditching full-sized variants because TKL sells better. it's already happening

    • @Moonwired
      @Moonwired 5 лет назад

      There’s a lot more variety than two choices here. The main problem with this argument is that there’s not really a choice. You have mainstream keyboards which cost €5 and they are plentiful. There’s no such option for smaller boards. If you’re going to make an informed choice you’re already needing to be willing to invest a significant sum of money. Which most people won’t do. As a sidenote, ask any medical professional to compare postures between boards and they’ll tell you the same thing.

    • @Moonwired
      @Moonwired 5 лет назад +2

      Your argument isn’t that it’s subjective, it’s objective. Keyboards are tools, and a numpad is a very handy tool if you’re working with numbers. It’s just better ergonomically if it’s on the left side of the keyboard. Unfortunately most people can’t justify the insane increase of cost to do that.

      @Вероника Заглотова We all have our preferences. Just because a 60% doesnt have a numpad, F keys, arrow key or the Home, End, etc keys doesn't mean you can't access them. They're mapped to a second or even a third layer of function keys.
      I often spend many hours behind my PC programming and writing emails and reports. Efficiency is important to me, but i don't often type large enough numbers to justify a numpad, the F1-12 keys are rarely used and the Home, End, etc keys are too far from the home row to make any sense for efficiency. If I'm gonna move my hand that far i might as well use the mouse or just spend 2 minutes adding a shortcut in my editor to do the same thing. Using a 60% has actually got me using those keys because they're mapped to keys i can use without moving my hands off the home row. For example, my keyboard uses fn + o for home. I don't need to move my hands for that.

It was things like video editing (keying values for effects, image size/placement, font sizes, zoom percentages, etc), calculating prices when researching products, basic photo editing (resize values, etc). • @n3er0o

      Vida l Zazueta What do you mean, "outside of work"? Do you mean literally unplugging your keyboard and taking it away from the place you work so you can use it with a laptop or something? Because you can't tell me you would seriously carry a full sized keyboard with you. If I don't use my numpad I simply move it under my monitor stand (it has an opening that could fit my entire keyboard + numpad for when I am studying) and when I am on the go and have to take my keyboard with me, I simply unplug my 60% and take it with me in my backpack. It's seriously small, which is a big plus for portability and next to the gained space on my desk, a major reason for me to get it.
      I won't up my DPI because I game at 400 and do a lot of image work, therefore need the precision. I can't go back to higher DPI now.

    As a person who's played CSGO too much ( i have more than 2300 hours in it) a large keyboard isn't in the cards for me since I never use the numberpad. i could put my buy binds on the numberpad like most pros tend to do but I've gotten used to using the other keys that don't get utilized in the game as my buy binds (Buy binds for Nades are F5-F8) (Common bought guns are scattered through out the board) and uncommon guns I just use the buy menu. The only reason I have these binds are so I can full buy and drop for someone quickly and not lose time going into my spot on a certain map. Granted the time it takes you to use the binds vs the buy menu isn't a whole lot, I've just gotten used to using my buy binds after playing for so long. I'm looking into a TKL or smaller board so I have more space to move my mouse and more space for my Razer Gigantus mouse pad. I don't think I've ever used the NAV cluster above the arrow keys aside from getting the occasional screenshot.
    TLDR: I have no use for a full-sized board but I'm just one of those 1% cases that need something smaller because you play a game so much it encompasses your space.

    I tend to use a 75% or a 60%, and a macro pad for my daily work. I would argue that it's a superior setup than a full sized. However if you factor in cost, there's really no beating the amount of sales and availability full sized keyboards have.

      with the amount of lazy asses who can't clean their desks and thus need teeny-tiny small keyboards, full-sized keyboard will soon be in a minority. it's already happening, some interesting keyboards are only TKL, like Wooting One

    • @MechMerlin
      @MechMerlin 6 лет назад +1

      vsm1 you should look at keyboards such as the Alf or Duck Eagle. A lot of people use smaller keyboards because it's more ergonomic. Buying a small keyboard due to inability to clean desk is hardly a good enough reason.

    • @vsm1456
      @vsm1456 6 лет назад

      MechMerlin, why should I look at them? they are less usefull because they lack lots of keys, and they aren't as comfortable as ergonomically shaped keyboards. why would somebody need this type of compromise is beyond me
      ergonomics doesn't come from size, it's about shapes and positions. with your wrists being so close to each other you have to bend them outwards even more than with a full sized keyboard

    • @MechMerlin
      @MechMerlin 6 лет назад +6

      vsm1 typing on a 60 percent is the same as a full sized when it comes to using alphanumerics and modifiers. It's literally just 60% of a full size. Your wrists are just as close. The ergonomics come from having your mouse closer. Keyboard length should ideally be as long as your torso is wide. For smaller people a standard keyboard doesn't fit that. In terms of functionality, I can program my arrows to the bottom right modifiers that I don't use and function keys to the number row on layer 1 so my hands never need to do awkward stretches or lift to get to them. For a numpad I have a separate numpad only keyboard that gets stored away when not in use or put to the right of my mouse when needed.

    I went from full to TKL a year and a half ago now, I no longer see the numpad for excel and numbers and stuff argument: I'm now up to 80-110wpm, including those numbers at the top, and imo they're more convenient than moving an entire hand over to the numpad for some numbers.

    They need to make removable numpads with a daisy chain cable. Just put it on the other side of the mouse, or even the other side of the keyboard when gaming. Or just flip it above the keyboard until you need it.

  • @marcinskotnicki4788
    @marcinskotnicki4788 6 лет назад +19

    Personally I think the best keyboard layout would be a full keyboard, but with the bumpad on the left, instead of on the right. With a normal fullsize keyboard I either have to reach very far for the mouse, with isn't very comfortable when I have to use the mouse a lot, or keep the keyboard a bit to the left, instead of having the alpha keys centered to my body, which isn't comfortable when I use the kyboard a lot. But since there aren't many keyboards like that, I just use a TKL with a separate numpad.

    Maybe a lot people didn't notice or know this, but short people like me ( I'm 160cm) with short range(Hands) Almost can't or not use a full size keyboard for gaming comfortably. Growing up, I have been using a laptop. Until 2 years ago I decided to change it to PC.
    When gaming, moving my mouse reflectively hit the edge of the keyboard, the range between my left hand and right hand is very short... it's very uncomfortable opening both of hands so wide because of full size keyboard's lenght and it keep pisses me off when my mouse hit the keyboard. Through adjusment I was getting used to this for 1 year, until I tried TKL keyboard. Now I won't and can't go back to full size keyboard.

    There is no better or worse size, it's all up to personal preference and what you need the extra keys for. Personally, I don't use the right side of the kb often and I think the compact look of smaller kbs is a lot more aesthetically pleasing so I go with a 60% or 65%. I'm using a 65% atm so I have the arrow keys and a few other functions but I've used 60% for gaming on and off for years. The only time I found it was a problem was in Fortnite because the building keys are defaulted to the F1-F5 keys which I don't have on my current 60% or 65% kbs. You can get boards that do have those extra buttons that are also compact though, the Preonic by OKLB is an ortholinear 65% kb that has the function keys as well if you play games that need them. It's all about what the person wants and needs out of a kb, most people don't use all of the kb on a full-size when gaming so if that's your primary use and you want to save some space then a TKL, 65% or 60% might be for you. I can do everything I need to on my smaller boards as fast as I would with the extra keys on a full size, so I personally chose the smaller boards for aesthetic reasons. After getting used to smaller boards and the key combinations for functions that you don't have keys for, I'm probably never going to go back. I just love the smaller boards, and there's so many more options for customizability in the enthusiast market. There aren't a lot of customizable build-it-yourself fullsize kbs out there that I'm aware of.

I bought a redragon visnu for 25 dollars 1 year ago, it's a TKL rainbow backlit keyboard that I really like, now I'll buy the tecware phantom RGB for 45 bucks, also TKL, I will never use a full sized again.

      If you're somebody who's really into the peripherals you use and is okay with devoting time to them to make them better for you personally, just get a 60% (or maybe a 65%) board that has QMK support, and literally program your own completely customized layout. I mostly just did mine by modifying the resources (i.e. keymaps etc) that were there, and I have 4 layers and a ton of binds that are individual to me, that I just individually decided to put where they are, and I'm so used to all of them that they come to me completely naturally. This includes all the function of a Numpad, an actual arrow cluster (since the PCB I have allows for that) and all the functions you have above the arrow keys on a TKL, and all of them are right under my fingers on a 60% board, without me having to sacrifice desk space or move my hands to the right.
      It can feel daunting at first to get into, but once you get a small QMK keyboard that you put the time into to customize, you will NEVER go back.

    A smaller size keyboard is easier to center in front of you for typing while having room for your mouse. You usually also get a function key that comes with features for volume up and down, and mute, or music playing features. What the numpad gets you on windows is the ability to make special symbols while holding down alt and hitting numpad numbers. The numpad is also nice just for being a numpad but besides the numpad if you don't really need it it's nice to have more space and compactness. Also smaller keyboards being more expensive is probably something more common with the bigger brands like Corsair and Logitech.

    From my point of view, when I'm typing I like to have the keyboard in the middle (I mean the space button should be in the center) and then the numeric keys are pushing the mouse far to the right and it's not comfortable for me. Since I'm not an accountant, I prefer the TKL keyboard. The macros are fine, but for a longer typing w mouse usage, it's not my cup of tea. :)

    Another really nice video. A side note: If you are experiencing the tingling, and pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome consider switching to a mechanical keyboard. The sensory feedback of the clicky type of mechanical keyboard, allows the typist to avoid bottoming out of the keys while key stroking. This requires that the typist get used to the particular keyboard. The buckling spring keyboards are probably the best at this, but the idea in general is that the click allows the user to eventually avoid the hard hammering of the key into the keyboard's key bed. The typical "membrane" type keyboard does not have any feedback which can allow the typist to train up to avoid the bottoming out effect.

    Why 60% keyboards are the best (in my opinion)
    1. They are cheaper
    2. You don’t need a number pad because you already have numbers
    3. You don’t need arrow keys because you can hold function and use wasd as arrow keys
    4. More room for mouses and convenient for smaller desks
    5. More portable
    6. You don’t need F keys because you and hold down function and use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, -, and =

  • @seven9766

    I found 4 things:
    1) I only wanted to pay for a single Keeb cause college student...
    2) I wanted a custom Layout, as i use the NEO layout, i do not want to solve that on the computer side.3.
    3) I wanted a split board. Nothing keeps me from putting the halves into a single case if i dont like it.
    4) I wanted a small keeb cause my desk doubles as a computer desk and writing desk and rc workbench.
    5) I do not need fancy LEDs, if i do everything right i won't look at my board during use anyway. And it consumes power. Not much more, but it is a point to make.
    I found the best bet to be a 60% QMK compatible Nyquist keeb.
    "where's the numpad?" i hear you ask?
    Guess what. Having a short spacebar enabled me to include a toggle button to activate a right hand numpad without ever moving my wrists.
    "but how do u use the arrow keys and function keys??? it makes no sense...
    Guess what. I only need a single lead key that opens exactly that to my hands without moving them.
    I even managed to implement unicode so my keeb is able to do greek letters and math stuff and god knows what i will program into it.
    To be fair: Whoever is looking for a plug and play experience stay away from my approach. It took me the better part of a month to build it, set it up, debug it, break it halfway, wait for replacement parts, repair, debug again. I do not recommend this for people on a tight budget with a keeb to replace by today. But for my primary keyboard i expect to use for the next 10 Years, it better be to my specs, and flexible enough should the software specs change.
    To anyone who does not need a keeb working by yesterday with a bit of time and an understanding of what you want, build your own and learn how to use QMK to make your keeb do what you want. Nothing more, nothing less.

    I found the answer why some people want to keep their hands closer and need small keybs, while some do not. It's this: *the height of your desk*
    When your desk is low and you place your arms on it they tend to be closer to each other and you have no room for numpad. When you have a higher desk your hands are naturally placed wider and you have no problem with full-sized keyboard and mouse.

  • @myne5689
    @myne5689 5 лет назад

    The reason the TKL or 60% are better is they are more ergonomic and allow you to position your arms in a better position. I am 27 and I can appreciate this, after years of doing damage to my wrists via no living video games. I will never go back to full size unless I am using excel, but you can get a separate num-pad anyway.

    I'm 30 and left-handed (Yeah, my mouse clicks do the same as yours lmao). Yeah, I'm old, lol. I remember the good ol' days and playing Warcraft 3/Dota 1 before you could remap the hotkeys, hand position was awkward AF. Ever since we got an option to bind hotkeys to "non-standard" keys, I've been using the arrows keys to move + Home/Delete/Insert/End/PgUp and Down + full Numpad as keybinds and RShift/CTRL as modifiers. Everything is close by and you have like 50 easy-to-access keybinds. Anywho, for me, a full-sized keyboard is a must. Finding a good ambidextrous mouse tho... now that's a pain in the rear.

      I have a 60% keyboard with numpad functionality (in a separate layer), an actual arrow cluster (because my PCB allows for a physically separate arrow cluster and an extra, separate Delete key, instead of an oversized right Shift the size of three normal 1u keys, a pointless right Ctrl, 1.25u Alt Gr and Fn keys which don't need to be bigger than 1u, and a discarded...what, Menu key or whatever they usually have next to right Ctrl that even you don't use or know what it does, but the functionality of which I could easily replicate elsewhere in my layers), and Function keys on all my layers, under the number keys (and corresponding 1 to F1 and 2 to F2 and so on is pretty intuitive, in my opinion). They're pretty convenient to press because one of my layers is activated by a button in-between my two Spacebars, right where my thumb rests.
      Idiotic, uninformed keyboard users be like "having the best of both worlds"? Informing yourself about all the options? Technology doesn't need to be limited by big, mainstream companies and their products? Pshh.

    If you've never tried fully programmable smaller 65% types of keyboards. I can generally say, they're superior when you get used to your own programming of your keyboard, It's faster and more efficient since the daily thousands movement of your fingers from key to key and from key to mouse is much smaller. You should try it for a while :)

  • @syundown6005

    I have to agree with this. Last year I got a Drevo 60% gaming keyboard, and I have to say, I miss the other 40%. I have to be honest though, while gaming I dont notice much of a difference and I couldn't care less, even if I need to use the f(#) functions because I can just hold function and select the needed number. The problem I run into, however, is the lack of hotkeys I can use as well as having to go through the tedious process of remaping for using Adobe After Effects, as I use that program a LOT. For example, I had to remap the marker hotkey and it took me forever just to find a key with an open space. So, I feel like if it's just to gamers, they'll be fine with any size keyboard. If it's also for editors and people who also use their computer as their workspace, then they NEED a full size keyboard.

    To be honest its down to personal preference. I have a Kbparadise v60 Type R (lights around the rim of the board) with Cherry MX White (slightly less clickly than blues) with a dark wooden case (to direct the light up and down giving a cool effect) along with grainy textured keycaps with laser etched side printed legends. Not to mention a custom coiled red cable. This thing is fucking amazing, and its much harder to get with a large keyboard.

    One thing I don't understand is, why are TKL keyboards popular when designs like the Cooler Master Quickfire TK exist? You get a more compact keyboard, yet you sill get both the numpad and the nav keys, and you can still easily press the enter key with your thumb while holding the mouse. Yes, it's exactly one key wider than a TKL, but does that really make a difference?

  • @MybeautifulandamazingPrincess

    To me there’s no question at all, 60% or tkl for mobility, if you carry your keyboard to use in other places or with your laptop, but being the desk for me it’s a full size keyboard, that’s all I use, cause typing numbers with the straight row above the letters is such a pain, plus I hate using function keys. I much prefer a full size keyboard with all the keys!

  • @aliciaaltair
    @aliciaaltair 5 лет назад

    Ergonomically TKL and Logitech's wireless ambidextrous mouse have been game-changers for me. I had to get serious about desk ergonomics and discovered that I was always shifting off-center of the keyboard to try and balance multi-monitor viewing angles and how far I had to reach to use the mouse. Hard to explain and different for everyone, but subtle shifts make a huge difference long-term in whether you create or avoid chronic pain. The ratio of shoulder width to where your elbows are is actually a really big deal! Especially relevant for women because that ratio is usually a larger difference than for men, and the larger keyboard exacerbates some of the issues that difference can cause. I miss the extra keys sometimes but the trade-off is being able to work all day without pain killers. Thinking of getting a separate num pad peripheral for things other than gaming like he mentions in the video.

  • @yogalD
    @yogalD 6 лет назад

    It's actually faster to hold down a fn key with your left hand and type numbers with your right hand on the alphanumeric keys like having a numpad than to physically move your right hand over to the numpad to type numbers. The only real advantage is price (which is a totally fair point because money is important)

  • @chaorrottai
    @chaorrottai 3 года назад

    Nevermind big gaming pad, it's basic ergonomics. A full size keyboard mandates that you reach further from typing position to access the mouse, often into, especially for women who are less broad shouldered, an awkward position. Over decades, this will cause more wear than necessary on your joints.
    It's the same reason that your monitor should be set to a proper height a reasonable distance from your face. Why it should comfortably fit your field of view. Why you should have area lighting or turn the brightness of your monitor down at night. Why you should buy a good seat and practice good posture.
    You get the point.

    The R.O.G Claymore, solves this. You could buy a number pad with the tenkeyless ROG Claymore, and it attaches it to the keyboard. So you could remove the number pad while gaming, but have it on while doing other stuff. But the keyboard is very expensive at 200 dollars in Canada.
