• You're so brave for using burlap • IT HAS POCKETS • the box pleats 😍 • love the mini you telling us stitch type and length • not me screaming at my phone that you put them together wrong 😭😭😭 • the collar being off center is perfect for Bucket tho • the smallest hat you've created yet
fellow bad embroiderer here!! typically i paint on the fabric underneath where im going to embroider, so the gaps between stitches arent as obvious lol, but you still have the texture of the embroidery!
That's such a good idea!! I'm about to do some embroidery for the sleeves on a Vivi cosplay and I've been trying to figure out how to make it look really nice but not spend 500 years on it. 😅
Honestly the best trick I’ve ever learned for sewing anything with gathers is simply to sew two rows of gathering stitches instead of one. That way you can tie your top and bottom threads to each other on one end, keeping them from accidentally slipping through. And having two parallel rows of stitching creates more strength, so your less likely to break your thread. Most importantly IMO this allows your gathers to sit more evenly around your garment, and it makes the seam allowances so much easier to sew and keep an even length.
If youre struggling to get a good gather, you can use a big wide zigzag, then thread embroidery thread underneath the zigzag and its SUPER fast (after gathering 12 yards of tulle i will NEVER do anything else for loose-weave fabrics lol
I’ve actually done this before and I LOVVVED it, the ruffles on my Sakizou Diamond were so heavy I had to do it that way, but it was so reliable and strong
@@SarahSpaceman as a person who is both too adhd to do each section individually AND too impatient not to break a gathering thread it has been a LIFESAVER
Honestly, I've been there with doing the lining backwards on delicate fabric. Soul crushing in the moments of realisation. But you did awesome on this, and I love seeing you work on projects. Also, I now know how to do bias on a corner XD
Why are you encouraging me to make a cosplay for my DND character? Do we need a forest gnome 🦝 cleric to wear to a convention? I’m just realizing that I can use my wheelchair to portray her Tibetan Mastiff mount. Okay I might have to do it
@benedicteadair6447 thanks, I have been procrastinating but I have been researching materials and trying not to fall into the rabbit hole for making a gambeson to wear beneath the +1 breast plate and belt of Dwarven Kind. Because of course I need a linen quilted armor piece of kit.
I love to see your videos! You make even the most boring parts of sewing fun, and you’re great at explaining things! Btw, love how you find a way to add pockets somewhere, I’m gonna try that now. XD
Love my Brothers embroidery machine. It's my first and only machine. I got it for sewing the imperial cog patch for my tie fighter pilot cosplay but yes, you are correct. I rarely use it (mainly for patches) but I love the option. Love your channel!
if you ever want to use burlap again. look into quilting fabric, they have a full line of printed cotton to look like burlap. very useful for garment! love your videos!
i love how it turned out!!! watching this makes me want to sew a full cosplay for one of my own dnd character!! (im definitely trying out the pocket method if i do)
Oh geez, I'm making an Oogie Boogie cosplay currently using like 15 yards of burlap and it is a nightmare, but I'm just trucking along and hoping that it all works out in the end haha
I stumbled upon you because of the genshin cosplay, but oh my goodness, the "we're here to watch you suffer" 😂 thanks for sharing with us. I'm working on my own genshin cosplay this month and it's so fun to watch while I work!
I realize this is a year later but just a very helpful tip. If you are going to use burlap make sure it is Fluorocarbon free. If it isn't it's made using petroleum . Food grade burlap is made using food grade vegetable oil. You don't want nasty chemicals on your skin. Also check to see if it is synthetic or natural burlap. So you want food grade burlap Not commercial landscaping/ nursery grade burlap which is treated with chemical to keep it from rotting. 😊
I'm so happy I came across your video! I love how you show what went wrong and what went right and just keeping it real :) also love your editing and clear instructions!
This is such a cute costume. Burlap is a pain, but you did a beautiful job! I'm not sure if it's helpful, but here are two tricks I use for gathering fabric. 1. I use button thread. It's thicker than your standard thread, so it's less likely to break. 2. I pull my first top stitch through to the back and knot my top and bottom stitch together. It helps to keep my thread from slipping out. Then, when I'm finished, it's easy to cut the knot off and pull the threads out.
I have to ask, are you using button thread for the gathering? Bc if not, that might improve the (admittedly, never short😅) length of time the ruffling is taking. Two lines of gathering thread can also help in both reducing chance of thread breaking and in increasing the regularity of ruffle
I honestly am considering doing machine embroidery with a regular sewing machine bc I've heard that it's possible and I am stubborn and don't want to purchase another sewing machine
I neeeeed to cosplay my dnd character to a ren fair. Im imagining me in full gremlin mode and goblin body paint, dropping random lore bombs that my wonderful dm wrote for me while i drink too much.
Hi dear love how you explain everything. I was wondering if your machine has a gathering ruffle foot for it would help making pleats and ruffles helped me with one cosplay I did.
I made a forest deamon cloak out of berlap for my boyfriend for the refaire and it was not fun lol. I don't have a serger so I did a zigzag stick and French seemed everything
Asa crafter and a person who worked in a fabric store I with to tell you that its better to buy the fabric the looks like burlap for clothing rather then the actual burlap as it is pokey and itchy and gets everywhere. I honestly hated the lady's that would come in and buy it in bulk I would have it all over me for days....you did a great job though.
I would never use burlap to make a dress. I'd have an instant meltdown after putting it on. If in the future, you need a cheap temporary fray check, you can use clear school glue. You just have to wait a long time for it to dry.
the "tabard thats not a tabard" is a scapula/scapular (which apparently is named for hanging from the shoulders) if anyone sees this and wanted to know.
I heard if you're going to make bro. App clothing, you soak your burlap. In fabric softener for a while. I would probably let it soak overnight. Put it in a gentle wash. Cycle. Says put at least 4 Coats of starch. I was thinking you could do what you did as well. Put a lining, so the inside isn't very scratchy. Also?
Nice. Look a fantasy stuff, even not d&d (maybe if you are a mage or witchcraft (or how is called that two classes in English) With a warlock, that's wasn't ok. For the fashion site: again, really cute. Maybe the embroidery is too high... It's covered from collar. Ma be was perfect with a tabard on the back also. (yes, it's tabard 😅)

Such a great tip!! Def using this for my current project, thank you!
HONEY WAKE UP NEW SARASPACEMAN YT VIDEO DROPPED
I believe the word you're thinking of is "Monastic Scapular" instead of tabbard.
This is such a pretty build! Beautiful work as always.
I googled it and thats exactly what I wanted it to be! Thanks!
Came to the comments to see the history clothes nerds give the proper nomenclature of it
The sleeves: A platypus?
The sleeves poking out of the overdress: Perry the Platypus?!?!
This, this is wonderful! Hope you have a great day!

AHH! The fear of breaking needles is real! I feel ya on that one. Bucket looks so adorable 💕

@@SarahSpaceman No problem! Btw I’m still marveling over over your Kokomi cosplay, it looks so cool.
love your videos and mini tutorials in the middle of them! insert pockets, bias tape, lovely infographics, i love all the work you do on these!
This project turned out so cute!! It’s really neat to see how you tackle difficult materials like this

I know it's a bit late but you can use alcohol markers to adjust the colour of the wagon wheel thread. I did it on some embroidered boots and it works

super cute dress! really nice colors and layering
very cute! Your dnd character has such a nice design and you did a great job bringing it to life
YOUR CHARACTER IS SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you're enjoying playing DnD!!
I can relate... I made a burlap cloak for a character once. Made a horrible decision of wearing it in the summer.
I use alot of sheets in my projects and those fray like crazy . I use a zigzag stitch to stop fraying from the edges
You're videos and discord community are a godsend

The sleeves poking out of the overdress: Perry the Platypus?!?!
I have a giant piece of burlap in my fabric stash and I haven't even watched the video yet and I'm scared
Awww don,t put yourself down it still looks good 👍 btw your cats are adorable

when using burlap i can highly recommend to glue all the edges as you cut them

Feather or ribbon? honestly why not both? I love the design and the embroidery! 1 question though. Why Burlap specifically?

I would actually die using burlap. I sneeze SO much when I'm anywhere near that stuff. I don't even wanna think about having it against my skin 😭
I feel like a rough-spun looking cotton or a thick wool fabric would have worked well instead. Plus without the itching 🤔
At 21:29 I said two bucks and then you broke a pin. Like as soon as the word bucks left my mouth, I hear "SNAP"!
Would it act batter if gou serge burlap with lining together? You will get more stable pieces
Love the new vid!
Burlap -shudders- I'm still finding pieces from when my roommate made her oogie boogie dress.

Does anyone know which Etsy pattern was used? The puff sleeves are so cute!
It’s linked in the description 😊
@@SarahSpaceman thank you! 😊

Sew two thin lines first then cut. Why did you use burlap bags? Those are softer.
Make channels for gathered areas.
Using 100% polyester burlap is setting yourself up for a fraying nightmare lmao burlap is supposed to be hemp or jute.
Omg I hate burlap.
