When reassembling the existing key barrel mechanism into the new steering lock casting ( 11:20 ) , is it possible to install in the wrong orientation? I pushed it in, it clicked into place, and now the key won't turn at all, seems like the steering lock is stuck out. Therefore I can't align the notch to pop it out again. Any help would be appreciated
Yes it's possible to put it backwards, however if the key cannot turn at all, then it should still be able to pull that locking tab back in with the pin. It may need to be harshly shaken or wiggled to get it out. I need to make a video of showing how to gut these things so people can just use the one's they have.
@@deamonmachine this exact same thing just happened to me. When reassembling, I must not have had it aligned properly because now it won’t turn at all and Im having trouble removing it again.
Hi. Just changed the whole barrel and the mechanism at the key side of it and on the other side now the car wouldn't start. It says that the key not detected but I have the old key on the key ring too. Also tried starting the car with the new and the old key side by side for the car to read the immobiliser chip but still says no key detected. Any ideas or tips. Thanks
Hi! Trying to get the key cylinder out of the housing. I'm trying to cut into the housing with a dremel to access the lever that is normally depressed by a pin (10:21). I am not having success being able to depress it and was wondering if there was anything I could do? This is because my cylinder is faulty enough that I can't turn the key to align the pin hole with the marking. Any help would be appreciated!
@deamonmachine Thank you, ended up doing that! Unfortunately I cut too far and also cut a plastic internal piece shorter. One that appears to stick out from the key cylinder and engage with one of two slots in the housing. Now when fully reinstalled it does not go into accessory mode nor start that car, though the key turns and wheel lock behaves like normal. Could that be because that plastic piece turns another component, or because I did not transfer the switch from the back of the old cylinder to the new? Or something else entirely? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your reply!
At about 6:35 in the video he’s able to do something to get the entire thing to drop down. I have the bolts out but I can’t figure out what is still holding it up in place. Any help I’d appreciated!
The 2 tabs are plastic, they are opposite the bolt's and on the bottom holding the edges of the housing in (not tightly though), you need to push those tabs back to make it finish dropping out.
@@deamonmachine I did finally find those but there seemed to be some other clips still holding it up. I ended up just banging it out with a hammer. Haha. It worked, Got the new one in and and everything back together and the car is running great. This video helped a ton thank you!
@@deamonmachine I'm having the same issue... Using a hammer makes me a little nervous, did you hit it toward the side? As in toward the driver's door? Break anything in the process?
Dealer in South Austin, Texas wants $180 for the replacement steering lock mechanism. The one I just ordered from Rock Auto for $43 arrives Tuesday. 😁 Thanks for the video. Took 25 minutes maybe for the removal. The breakaway bolts were tough to work out, and I had to break away parts of some plastic rings solely keeping one from getting a good angle on the tops of the bolts with the corner of a screwdriver. Prior to reusing them, I am going to slot them on the top with my Dremel to allow their tightening with a lg slotted screwdriver. Hopefully everything goes well Wednesday morning for reinstall.
@@paolomunar Part arrived on time. Install went fairly smooth. I say fairly, because upon removing the old unit days earlier, I failed to realize the parts under the cap on the drivers door side of steering lock, did not come with the new steering wheel lock. I had recklessly ripped them out of the old one to investigate , ok out of curiosity. Luckily found the pieces and figured out the proper order for reinstall. Without the parts properly placed, the unit does not function. Looked for over an hour for an exploded diagram of these parts to insure proper install, but found none and had to puzzle them back into place.
@@FernandoRodriguez-ds5ri I did not replace the ignition switch. I used original switch which I removed from the old steering column lock assembly and installed it into the new one.
thanks for the video but Im having a problem getting the screws loose that hold the lock cylinder any other tips that can help? i saw the way you did yours you made it look so easy.
Hey man, I just watched this video and it helped. But I think I did something wrong. My key went in and will turn, but wont turn back off and I cant removed the key. I was gonna remove the key switch and try again, but I dont have that pin tool you have. Any ideas?
What is the thing with the point that you reattach to the cylinder housing that goes into the housing? Is that something that can also stop the key from turning? Is that for the park sensor or immobilizer?
What does the sensor for the key do . Have same problem on 2012 Passat thinking maybe you could push that button up inside the ignition sleeve thing instead of buying a new one and lube it ?
Got everything out and the new one installed. Having trouble finding where the small plug with the red and black wires plugs back in. I've looked all under the steering wheel/column. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I just got mine apart. Did do the bang around to get the cylinder to turn for removal. I think I know how it needs to be placed for it to work. Have the key facing up, smack down on hard surface of choice while turning key. I found through messing around with the assembly that the guts would turn easily if you push in where the lock cylinder goes. The lock cylinder only turns the mechanism not push down. Not sure as to what is causing the issue, didn't see anything obvious. Tried cleaning and greasing and while it smoothed out would still jam until you pushed in. Will be replacing steering lock assembly. Also, I drilled holes in the plastic bracket to get the bolts out. Just big enough to get a small punch in and in the direction for loosening.
I have same problem currently occurring on my 2010 GTI. Is it a straight replacement of parts or did you need to do anything with a scan tool after replacement of ignition switch?
Great video! However, right now I an continuously turning the tamper proof bolts, but they just keep spinning and the bolts aren't coming out! Maybe I'll just drill them out
Quick question does the left side screw come off in a different direction cuz I took the right one pretty easy but iv beaten the shit outta the left one and it still hasn’t came off
To remove the switch you showed you had to punch out the two screws at the top. What'd you have to do to install the new switch to the steering column?
Got 2 new bolts that are the correct threat pitch and size (m8 I believe). Take the old one to the hardware store and look for a matching one (they should interlace with each other).
Hey, I got the new part for it, installed it the same way as you mentioned, but the steering lock piece won't go in the lock position, so its thinking the key is still in the ignition and can't lock or unlock doors with the remote, any idea how to fix that, let me know thank you in advance
try re-seating it on the steering column, the locking actuator may be hung up on the column itself (there's a cutout for the lock to engage on the steering shaft). I've gotten it off center before, tough to bolt down and doesn't work right, reseated it and it fixed it for me (as best as I can tell your issue is with this description).
This happened to my 2011 jetta today 2 hours away from home, found out it’s very easy to hot-wire 😂 Not paying for that tow. Hoping this works, just ordered the part.
@@hardcore4476 RUclips tylersteffen200 he has a good video. I just followed his video. You still need the key so the steering wheel doesn’t lock though.
I got a 2012 Jetta GLI. Exact part like the new one you got. However, when I put it together with the other connectors, it still doesn’t work. I even took the original ignition switch onto the new housing. Still nothing. Any ideas? Could I have also put the tumbler in the wrong way?
before you couldn't turn the key, now you can turn the key and it still doesn't crank-over or start-up? That's possibly a wiring issue if I understood that correctly (or starter etc).
How did you pull the ignition cylinder off of the steering column? It feels fastened on still after removing the breakaway bolts. You seemed to snap it off somehow. Any advice?
Thanks bro. I've got the same problem now, I hope my mechanic will be able to sort it out without having to get a new key. it seems to stick in the on position . Thanks. Golf Mk 6 2009.🙏
Is there a link to the replacement? Got a 2011 that’s been sitting for a while. Also, does it require key reprogramming? I’m assuming no from the looks of the video. Great video too. Very helpful and no BS or rambling about other things.
You did a video on a 2012 Jetta ignition replacement. I have a new lock and assembly. The lock was made to my VIN and fits my key. I’ve put the two parts together and I can move the key from on to start, and it springs back, but I can’t move it to off (or get the steering wheel lock button to pop off). Will there be any problems if I reinstall it to the car this way? Does it need power to go from on to off? Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!
Hello my friend,im going to do same job following your video. Just check prices and brands and runs from $35 to over $250. The one you install was aftermarket or vw part. Any part number to make it easy? Thank you!!
Is this the same or at least similar for push to start? My 2011 Jetta says "Ignition switch off" when I try to start it. Really hoping it's just that ignition switch and not something else, not trying to open everything up and end up not having a single idea what i'm doing lol.
No, I just used some normal bolts. Those breaks away screws are so easily defeated. However, having a thin walled 13mm that JUST fits, is more difficult :D

FYI the specs on the bolts are M8 x 1.25 x 20mm long. Replaced mine with simple regular flange head bolts.
Are you referring to the security bolts ?
@@cooldude30211 Yes, the breakaway head ones. Why bother with those when you can use ordinary bolts in case you have to service it again in the future.
You're awesome, thank you!
Thank you.. Where did you buy the bolts at?
Yes! this was the last thing I was looking for were the specs on the bolts!
I have that exact car (except with a manual trans) with that exact problem. These videos definitely helped. Thank you!
I'm literally about to do the same with my car. Just watching videos before I order the part
Thank you very very much for this video. After 11 years of daily driving my GTI, the key switch locked-up on me today...after 15 minutes of messing with it, I got it working again, but it's only a matter of time before it fails permanently. Will be replacing it soon!
This is exactly what I needed to see thanks for your time man!
Thank you for helping me fix my wife's car. Would have been a different experience entirely without your video
How did you reprogram the key after replacing the ignition switch?
You do not reprogram the key.
your video really made my day, just followed what you showed/did, ez-pz with with some persuasion with the bolts, and taking the tumbler off :), 100% the best video. Saved a lot of time & $$$, Thank You Sir....
Thank you Volkswagen. Half a years feul money to have someone repair my ignition 1k bill 2 days off of work cabs around the city to drop off and pick up tired of garbage v w cars underengineered and extremely expensive parts super hard to work on.
Over-engineered I say. Too much complicated crap. Think they are so smart. Idiots. Made expensive junk cars.
Awesome video..thanks...had this problem on my 12 Jetta...your video absolutely saved my butt..got the cylinder aftermarket from the green guys..didnt come with the bolts so just got some frome Ace..no worries..thanks for the assist..
This video saved me a lot of money. Thank you for making this very helpful video! :)
How did you get the mobilizer working again? Where did you get the new ignition piece ?
well done great instructions easy to follow I'm going to try this on my daughters 07 VW Touran tomorrow keep you updated cheers ..
No one can do it except you guys.
Thank you for posting! I just completed this job and it worked to perfection 👌 I could only imagine what vw would have charged me let alone the tow bill. Best video too btw. F taking the steering wheel off and air bag like other similar videos. God bless.

So what do i do if i cant get my wheel to unlock/turn 😢
Keep trying the key and turning the wheel. It needs to move enough to get the cover bolts out, once that's done turning the wheel is irrelevant.
Thanks
Probably check to make sure the chip reader is back in the right place and plugged in correctly.
Brilliant video! My mk5 golf had the same issue, except for scoring the safetybolts with a multitool i did the same as u did, thanks 👍🏼
Any help would be appreciated!
if it gets that bad, cut the housing in half? (assuming you have a new one)
I can’t find the clip that you disconnect at 6:35 :( The cylinder just won’t drop/release for me!!
Thanks so much. This video may have saved my job
How did the one from Rockauto do? Was it easy like his OEM part?
@@paolomunar Part arrived on time. Install went fairly smooth. I say fairly, because upon removing the old unit days earlier, I failed to realize the parts under the cap on the drivers door side of steering lock, did not come with the new steering wheel lock. I had recklessly ripped them out of the old one to investigate , ok out of curiosity. Luckily found the pieces and figured out the proper order for reinstall. Without the parts properly placed, the unit does not function. Looked for over an hour for an exploded diagram of these parts to insure proper install, but found none and had to puzzle them back into place.
How did you reprogram the key after replacing the ignition switch?
@@FernandoRodriguez-ds5ri I did not replace the ignition switch. I used original switch which I removed from the old steering column lock assembly and installed it into the new one.
thanks for the video but Im having a problem getting the screws loose that hold the lock cylinder any other tips that can help? i saw the way you did yours you made it look so easy.
Hey man, I just watched this video and it helped. But I think I did something wrong. My key went in and will turn, but wont turn back off and I cant removed the key. I was gonna remove the key switch and try again, but I dont have that pin tool you have. Any ideas?
My dude your a life saver. God bless you 🙏
Great video. Followed the steps, but car won' t start. Key turns, lights and radio work. Have any idea what the problem could be?
Gotta make sure you plugged in everything.
Did you ever get it figured out? This same thing is happening to me. Key turns lights radio all on but won’t start.
@@hannahvarela did you find the solution?
Maybe it’s the switch itself. The electric switch.
What is the thing with the point that you reattach to the cylinder housing that goes into the housing? Is that something that can also stop the key from turning? Is that for the park sensor or immobilizer?
No idea honestly, never had it break and never had a reason to look it up. It doesn't seem to stop the key from turning.
What does the sensor for the key do . Have same problem on 2012 Passat thinking maybe you could
push that button up inside the ignition sleeve thing instead of buying a new one and lube it ?
Where did you buy picks and pins
Best video I found on this. You helped me tackle this project with ease. Thank you!
I have a 2012 vw golf tdi wont crank won't start... gear lever makes a clicking noise when trying to start it ... any idea what could it be ? thanks!!
Got everything out and the new one installed. Having trouble finding where the small plug with the red and black wires plugs back in. I've looked all under the steering wheel/column. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
What about the screws you removed from the top that hold the ignition cylinder in place?
Ignition lock bolts...
Only a few dollars.
Can anyone have video explain what he did at 6:33? I remove all the bolt, wire but i dont know what is holding it
With you only having to replace the Ignition cylinder did you have to reprogram the key to the car?
no, this is purely mechanical parts being replaced.
The bolts you know ked out were you able to knock them back in?
no, just replace with regular bolt. It's not like it's hard to remove or will keep anyone from stealing it.
Maybe I'll just drill them out
drilling is fine, it's just messy, if they are spinning they should.. come out
An auto center punch for those break off bolts work great just make a dent about 3 times then do it at an angle, they come out pretty easy
Quick question does the left side screw come off in a different direction cuz I took the right one pretty easy but iv beaten the shit outta the left one and it still hasn’t came off
Same direction. Lefty loosey
Thanks for the video, other videos teardown the driver wheel, for me take appart the airbag module was imposible, a lot of force in plastic parts.
How’d you hot wire it?
@@hardcore4476 RUclips tylersteffen200 he has a good video. I just followed his video. You still need the key so the steering wheel doesn’t lock though.
@@ZeroHecks ok, thanks!
what about if I have my key stuck in the on position? do I need to follow the same process?
you do the work that's how it happened in my car and the switch was damaged I don't turn the key anymore
Could it be faulty ignition switch perhaps?
If it comes with new sensors do you have to get it programmed?
Haven't had to yet. it's mainly a mechanical replacement, not so much electrical. That's why it doesn't change anything in the programming or key.
What is the part number on the new ignition lock assembly?
How did you pull the ignition cylinder off of the steering column? It feels fastened on still after removing the breakaway bolts. You seemed to snap it off somehow. Any advice?
There are 2 little plastic tabs that hold up the cylinder until you get the bolts in.
Thank you so much for your time and your efforts..in making this tutorials much appreciated.
Is there any re-programming required when installing new one?
no programming needed, should turn and work if it's all plugged in correctly.
I drop the steering wheel . As far as it goes still no room .how you drop it more
once you unlock the steering system, that's as far down as it goes unfortunately.
Thank you for making this video..
I put it together but the key still won't t turn.
I'm trying to get the key lock out but the holes don't line up. Any suggestions?
Question do the replacement part like this has to be reprogrammed when it is install thanks i have 09 jetta 2.5 gas
No
Where to buy the ignition switch cylinder and 2 bolts needed?
Any parts warehouse? They can order it for you most likely.
What was the point of taking off the piece by the shifter?
So he can shift into neutral and roll the car
So will I have to program a new switch
I know this is an old video. I need guidance on putting the top two bolts that you did. how did you get them tight again?
Put new ones. Other comments mention this.
Really hoping it's just that ignition switch and not something else, not trying to open everything up and end up not having a single idea what i'm doing lol.
good video any idea as to how to remove broken key in tumbler?
Hello hope you're doing great! Question. Did you use the same break-off screws to install it? Thanks in advance bro!
No, I just used some normal bolts. Those breaks away screws are so easily defeated. However, having a thin walled 13mm that JUST fits, is more difficult :D
@@deamonmachine I feel you!! Thanks brother I'll try some normal bolts with the same thread and pitch! 👍🏻
I can't get the black plastic part that holds the key out even after sticking the pin in, and it's aligned correctly... Any tips?
