I have huge affection for these 502/3s. Born in 1973 I lived on the Herts/Essex border and the family used to travel by train up to Formby to see my Grandma. These units had personality, a face and were comfortable with, for a five year old, very bouncy seats. I remember seeing my first 507 at Birkdale naturally inquisitive when I eventually rode in one I found it bland and the seats were very hard. I believe these were first withdrawn from the Northern then Wirral because we used to get one from Lime Street to Central then the 507 from Central to Formby. We would also have got 502/3’s from Exchange but I don’t remember that. I do remember mum getting a taxi from Lime Street to Exchange, the driver looked at her funny but took the fare and drove us. When we arrived the station was closed! There is a little footage of 503s on YT they are the only EMU’s I’ve ever liked.
The NRM don't give a stuff about anything electric. Why on earth there's a Japanese Bullet Train motor car - entirely built in Japan with Japanese components there is beyond me ! Surely it would've been better to have repatriated one of the BREL-built EMU100's from Taiwan ? The old SR SUB car at the NRM has no motors. The 2HAP is sat out there in the rain. Same goes for the APT , resting and rusting. But they're quite happy, it seems, to build new steam locos in Britain !
Flyingscotsman is not a new steam loco and it has a good number of old parts. A Japanese Bullet Train motor car has a right to be in the collection and be the only one outside of Japan. The APT-E is undercover at Locomotion and the APT-P is not owned by the NRM. Actually the NRM does care about electric and is more do with money. The NRM is about preserving for the future generations and not everything running. The point of museums to have things on display.
It’s patently obvious to everyone (except you apparently) why the bullet train is a much more significant part of railway history than a local train that trundled around Merseyside.
That is our aim Malcolm, currently we are rebuilding the cab & cab end seating bay on 29896. The seating bay at the other end of the coach having been completed. This involved both replacing the steel skin & totally a new steel floor www.flickr.com/photos/merseywail/32231022172/in/photostream/
I don't personally have any footage of the 502's myself but there is a video elsewhere on RUclips featuring the similar Class 503 on Merseyrail which were retired in 1985.
Lovely to see her/ sit on her again yesterday, looks like a lot of works been done over the last year.
These trains 502, 508 were purchased by Merseytrave l second hand. They were 5 years old when Merseyside got them
Excellent video, thank you.
