Port Aransas, in the 30's and 40's, was the Tarpon capital of the world. You can still find them at the end of the South Jetty. I haven't seen any or heard of anyone catching them in the bay or around Aransas Pass. You should stop in at The Fly Trap in Rockport and talk to Chris Fowler and see what he says. He is the resident expert in that region. The Fly Trap is a great fly shop down there.
i use worldwide sportsman saltwater leader i havent broke off once using it haha, even for spanish mackerel! i love fly fishing the port A jetties when its a nice calm day. october is the best for it.
You can launch anywhere along the road that runs from Aransas Pass to Port A - on either side. As to where to stay - there are a number of decent hotels in Aransas Pass and Ingleside.
The leader that keep getting cut by the lady fish was 20lb Fluorocarbon. The stainless Steel leader is call "Toothy Critters" Isn't any stronger in terms of break strength - it just won't get cut by the teeth/gill plate of the lady fish. The only drawback to using it is that it tends to bend and won't straighten out over time - so it doesn't make the best presentation of the fly.
@@greggibby3062 Last Q - looks like you were to the inside islands from the channel - not the channel along the road but the other one heading north .. right? Lots of places to fish in that area it looks like.. I am going down next weekend ... We will get in sync ..
@@jasonlong7480 There are a couple of spots that are pretty good to launch from - Fin and Feather and lighthouse lakes kayak launch. And seriously - you can just pick a spot on the side of the road :-); just need to be careful about where you drive/park. The tides can swing pretty far at certain times and there are also a few spots where it's muddy and not the best to launch from.
