Texas on the Fly
Добавлен 29 мар 2014
I am an avid Fly Fisherman and love fishing the lakes, streams and saltwater bays of Texas. I try to get out every weekend and try different spots. I also tie many of my own flies and enjoy trying out different patterns. Hope you enjoy watching these videos as much as I enjoy making them.
Another great day on Decker Lake
1st of Nov and temps still close to 80F - gotta love it! Another great day on Decker Lake. The boat ramp is closed - so no boats or jet skis - I wish they would never reopen it :-). Fishing was pretty good - got some nice bass and crappie. Another wonderful day on the water - can't wait to go again...

Yet another beautiful day in central Texas - and the fishing as ok as well. Went to Decker Lake. It's about 6-7 feet low and the boat ramp is closed - really nice for a kayak - no boats. Wonderful day on the water. Can't wait to go again...
Lake Fayette is a fish desert

Tried out a new spot - Lake Fayette. Looks like it should be full of bass, but only hooked up on one - definitely not worth the drive... Left after 5 hours and stopped at Lake Bastrop on the way home to complete a 1/2 day fishing trip. Only fished for a few hours at Bastrop - but did ok. Got to enjoy one of the prettiest sunsets I've seen is a while. Can't wait to go again...

Day 2 of my trip to Keller Bay, and it was even windier. Fishing wasn't any better either. Called it early and headed back to Austin - making a pit spot at Lake Bastrop on the way. (And did ok there.) Can't wait to go again...

Crazy windy day on the Texas coast. Fishing wasn't great - only got a few once the sun set. It was nice to get back on salt, but I wish it wasn't so windy. Can't wait to go again...

Another beautiful sunrise and another beautiful day in central Texas - and the fishing was great too. I tried a new fly I tied up (Double hook streamer - video is here if interested in tying your own - ruclips.net/video/oCKmkcpsgoU/видео.html ) It was super windy, but if once I found some calm water - the fishing was great. Can't wait to go again...

I tried tying up a double hook streamer fly for bass fishing as an experiment - and it did really well. Showing how I tied it up. BTW - pretty sure this will do well for redfish too...

Late Summer Morning at Brushy Creek Lake
I saw you on my way out. Had a pretty good day myself but looks like you won. I was in the orange crescent.
I just stumbled onto your channel. I really have been enjoying your videos. They are straight forward without a lot of dead time footage. It seems that you keep it very simple. I would enjoy seeing a video that goes over the equipment that you use: kayak, rod, etc.
Your fishing with that looser? He is a punk. No way did that fish count.😂. Glad he found a friend who likes to fish as much as he does. I'm his brother. Tell him to Make you some rib!
Man, what an awesome video. Fly fishing for large mouth is the most fun thing in the world, and no one does it.
Fun stuff, how long were you out there?
about 5 hours or so - wish it could have been longer :-) It was a beautiful day.
That’s awesome, you always seem to catch a lot of fish, I’m thinking I don’t stay out long enough, really appreciate your videos !
Were those ducks at the beginning?
Coots
Fayette is tricky to figure out. I’ve had a lot of success in the trees. Haven’t had a lot of a bite around grass and reeds but I’ve seen others get them good.
I said I wouldn’t go back, but I can’t accept my defeat, so I may go back this winter to try again. It’s such a long drive, I better do really good next time. 😊
Fly fishing seems so fun. Definitely trying it. Thanks for this awesome video and catches. New subscriber here
Welcome, glad you enjoyed it. Good luck!
@@greggibby3062 Thank you so much
This was so informative! I appreciate the effort you put into this video!
I thought it was closed?
Nope - just no fish 🙂
That’s a fun lake to fish.
Yeah, I love it. Wish it was closer to my house.
Is that your same fly setup as other trips?
Yep. I keep thinking about trying a top water, but may streamer always seems to work.
@greggibby3062 same fly rod too? No reason to change patterns, it's too effective. Oh, I got a pair of those palmmyth gloves. Nice!! 👍
@@andrewj.karaffa7080 Yes - I use an 11wt with 10 wt saltwater floating line. (i know - it's overkill...) but, I can cast great with it and it's really light. I go with a 12-15ft leader as well.
@greggibby3062 overkill or not, it works. Looks like it casts awesome. Good stuff sir.
Man you were slaying em, way to go and thanks for sharing
Wish every day was like that 😊
Looks like you have been doing well lately! Great videos, keep it up.
It’s been great. Never a bad day fishing, some are just better than others. 😊
Wow, you got out early. It looks like weekdays are the best days to go, as no one is on wave runners. Nice 20-inch bass. Good day on the water.
Just saw this video buddy. That sucks. Looks like something I would do.
Not all bad, I got a new phone 😊
Are you seeing better fishing in the early morning or afternoons?
Morning for sure
Is that a bucktail fly?
No - all synthetic - basically flash and grizzly hackle
me from Indonesia, if I had the chance, I would like to fish there, there are lots of fish and the spot is very beautiful♥️☺️
And I would love to go to Indonesia to fish 🙂
@@greggibby3062Can we go fishing together here, my brother?
look like a good, havent gotten to bastrop yet, but i've heard its good. Oh, what gloves are those, they look comfy
Palmyth - they are great. I like them because they have long fingers - so my fingers don't get torn up striping the line, they are longer and go up the wrist pretty high so they minimize the gap between your shirt and glove, and they have good grip pads so they don't slip while paddling.
Great day, congrats and thx for the video.
I like that area I fish around all the oyster beds.
Are you fishing sink tip?
No - I use floating line with ~15ft leader. I've tried the sinking line and it doesn't cast great - and on this lake there is a lot of hydrilla. so unless the fish are really deep (over 15 ft) sinking line isn't great.
@greggibby3062 good to know, thanks, be safe out there
Nice! In the video you were saying something about needing to move forward another 20 feet. Why? Was there a channel or oyster reef you were trying to fish over? We will be kayak fishing this weekend in CC area. Hopefully we get some keepers. Tight lines
There was a channel where the current was moving right at the edge of a grass bed. Just trying to find a spot where I thought some trout might be sitting. Good luck!
What size was that white Seaducer? I’m in central FL, been thinking about sizing down all my flies next season. I’ve spooked more fish in the last few seasons than I’ve caught. Fishing in 6-10” of clear water is so frustrating lol. I’ve had pretty good luck with size 2 gold spoon flies dressed up kinda “shrimpy”.
@@michaelbacile8439
I typically go with a size 4. It matches the size of most of the shrimp in the bays here. Water is usually a big off color here as well.
Is that a shrimp imitation you used?
Yes. Both the white and pink and the tan are shrimp imitations.
Looks like another fun day on the water
Never a bad day - some are just better than others 🙂
Shhhhhh stop telling people
Jk we depend on you guyses tourism. Keep on keeping on
Are you using a clouser minnow? If you tie flies, how about showing how you tie yours or at least share a view of the type. You catch bass very well on the fly rod.
I do tie my own flies. I'll look at doing some more fly tying vids. One of my go to flies is the spinner fly - here's the vid: ruclips.net/video/Tg2FSr_OVbU/видео.html
Looks like you had a good time on the water
Never a bad day on the water - just varying degrees of goodness 🙂
Good video, the walk did not look too bad.
It was a fun day on the lake, I was glad to see you got a few bass. Next time we will get the bass. Thanks for having me out.
awesome!!!
It looks like you are back, and had a good day out fishing. I'll send you a text tomorrow. You should get a net. I may have found another place to put in at, I'm going to be scouting it out.
Hey man, been watching your channel for a while and I think you mentioned you use an 11wt. So I just got a 9wt and i find it very difficult casting in general coming from my 6wt. Now I can see what you do with that 11wt is pretty impressive. Any tips on how do handle a heavy rod?
Lot of different factors to consider - is it a fast action or medium action, carbon fiber or fiberglass, etc.. But - even with all that, I've found that doing a double haul and letting the rod do most of the work is the best way to get more distance and to save your arm and shoulder. there is a really good tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/D5tIbK6xcjI/видео.html
@@greggibby3062 thank you!
Hi Jonathan. Some added advice which might speed your learning curve and minimize future frustration/mistakes. First some background- I am not a professional though I have been flyfishing longer than the majority of guides I've met. In my youth, I started flyfishing for panfish/bass/pike/carp and other freshwater species. However, at this point I have almost exclusively (not counting flyfishing trips for bass or when I journeyed elsewhere) flyfished the entire Tx gulf coast from Galveston to SPI for over 30 years. As already noted by the content creator the DOUBLE HAUL is vital for any fly fisher. It's even more critical to saltwater flyfishing than freshwater. I recently discovered another channel which I've been enjoying where almost all of flyfishing content is done on small central Tx streams. From the video perspective of the content creator, I immediately noticed this gentleman's casting stroke lacked the use of both the single and double haul. This is why he required an excessive number of false casts in order to reach his target- even when using small flies. As it happens, later in the series of his videos I saw where this person fished the gulf coast with a friend targeting redfish from a guides flats skiff. I KNEW he would struggle mightily even before he took his first shot because of his casting stroke. What I am about to share with you, is not intended to come across as bragging so bear with me. When I first decided to learn how saltwater flats/surf flyfish I was told by a boat salesman I met at a boat show in Houston who had just gotten into saltwater flyfishing that I would need a 9 or 10 weight- so this is what I purchased. This was completely erroneous information. I did catch fish, however it's akin to using a bazooka to hunt rabbit and squirrel. Shortly thereafter, I went to the ONLY fly shop in Houston at the time (long out of business) where I met Capt. Chris Phillips- may he rest in peace. Chris was transplanted Floridian working part time at the store and once (perhaps still does) held one of the tarpon flyfishing records in Florida. He was an outstanding guide who brought his Florida style flats skiff to Houston and would roam the gulf chasing tarpon, tuna etc. whenever he was not inshore fishing. It was he who informed me I would not need anything above a 6wt to handle any inshore fish. And that was that. Now, the ONLY reason I will pick up a 9 or 10 weight is when I am chasing pelagic brutes like Jack Crevalle. If you learn the correct casting stroke utilizing a double haul, you'll be able to use your 6wt all the time. My go to rod for 3 decades has been a 6 wt. When it's dead calm as it was in this particular video, you can easily use a 5wt unless you are using a big wind resistant fly. Back in the 90's I would fish the big open flats of the Laguna Madre-there is zero wind protection there- with Capt. Scott Sparrow (I believe he's now retired) all day long with a 5 TFO wt unless the wind was simply howling. Now, the only time I break out an 8wt for inshore flyfishing is when I am casting large-weighted flies standing on the bow of a casting platform needing to punch into a stout wind or when chasing Bahamian bonefish. Here in Tx, an 8 wt will handle any big inshore fish - including the baby/juvenile tarpon you can find in deep S. Tx and trust me, tarpon can PULL. If you can find it, see if you can locate an excellent though now ancient instructional video by Chico Fernandez. Chico is amongst an elite group of legendary S Florida saltwater flyfishing experts- and S. Florida is where all of this was born. The video is back from the VHS tape era, but it might be available in modern format. It was filmed against a black ground and also used slow motion so you can easily see what is happening with the fly line. If you can practice a bit, and apply the information from that video you will have no problem transitioning to the saltwater game. If you aren't yet using the double haul, you will also reap an instant benefit in freshwater environments when throwing big deer hair surface flies for bass or big poppers for stripers. Best of luck in your future flyfishing journey's.
Those were nice-looking bass, too bad the wind picked up on you...I just sent you an email.
Nice cat. Did you get any video of the other fish?
I'm going to head out and do some fishing at the location, It's too much of a kayak drag for me so I'm going to try some wading. I hope it not going to be windy. Just tied up some flys for this spot the other night.
Good luck. There were a couple of guys spin casting from shore on the side with the water plant that did pretty good while I was there.
@@greggibby3062 nice, I just got back from that location, It was a short trip wading out, and I got 2 bass one was small and the other was 15 inches, I was chatting with a young guy who was telling a spot where he always does really we at. But need a Kayak to get to it.
@@greggibby3062 I did some wading and picked up 2 bass and a sunny. Are you on FaceBook?
Looks like a good day to me!
Yeah, I shouldn’t complain, but last time I was there it was nonstop action. Always a good day when you’re on the water 😊
wow that was a really nice day of fly fishing looks like I will be hitting that up very soon as in this week.
I looked at the spot 2 weeks ago and was thinking about taking my kayak down. I bet not alot of people are fishing that spot with the ramp being out. When I looked at the spot there were a ton of carp. I may have to suck it up and take the kayak down and do some fly fishing at the spot.
Water is coming up, so it may be opening up soon. Fishing was fantastic!
I just found your channel, your videos are fun. I fly fish as well, and do my best to get out 2 times a week. I live in Leander Tx and always looking for someone to go fly fishing with. I have a kayak and stuff. I tie my own flys as well and I build my own fly rods. Let me know if you want to meet up and go fly fishing sometime. I'm always free to do some fly fishing.
Would love to meet up sometime. I'm on LinkedIn (Greg Gibby) we can connect there and exchange info
Awesome
I need to get my yak out. This skiff has me spoiled.
I wish I had a skiff 🙂
Where do you get the spinners?
Amazon: Aventik 75pcs Brass Fly Propeller, Well Balanced, Three Sizes, Three Fish Men Approved Finishes; Bass Bugs, Baitfish, Spinner Flies, Fresh Water & Salt Water
That is a long as DRAG of the Kayak?
Yeah, it’s a bit of work, but the fishing was excellent.
@@greggibby3062 Yep sorry for not saying that ... well done... you got some nice CHUNKS!
Great video, is there any way you can show us how to tie the fly you use with the little spinner on it. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Sure thing!
How do setup your anchor? I have a float tube, considering adding 1
Pretty simple - just tie the anchor rope to the bottom of the anchor, use a break away zip-tie to hold it to the top. You need to do that incase it get stuck on something - otherwise you will be donating an anchor at some point 🙂. Then add a float to the line. I would recommend a 1lbs anchor for a float tube - lots of options for individual pieces or a full set-up on Amazon.
@greggibby3062 awesome thanks!! Oh, I had no idea there were 2 lakes/ponds in cedar Park. I'm not that far from there. Hitting both of those up this week!
@@andrewj.karaffa7080 good luck
Awesome fishing! love your videos. Where did you get those shrimp flies?
Discount Flies - spawning shrimp pattern, size 4. I tie my own as well - the store bought ones don't seem to last too long.
Thank you! @greggibby3062
Loved the Video!! subscribed for more, thanks for sharing.
Welcome to the channel - glad you liked it. Certainty a lot of fun to make 🙂
Great day of fishing, thanks for sharing! Were you able to drop your kayak at the bottom of the ramp or did you have to haul it all the way down and back up?
They have it roped off at the top of the ramp - so you need to haul it. 😞
Gotcha, I’ve really been enjoying your vids, keep it coming!
