So, if the water in your boat is deep enough for any oil to be floated above the pump, will the pump pump the water out till it brings the oil back down to the level of the sensor? In other words, if my boat has a little oil in the bilge will the Rule pump still keep it from sinking at the dock or will it just call it quits completely when it comes in contact with some oil thereby letting my boat sit on the bottom of the lake and letting all the oil in the boat out to swim with the fishies?

So any oil in the bilge (like there often is) will stop the pump from working. Safety is more important than some oil going into the sea

I think it measures the conductivity of the liquid and makes a determination whether it's oil or water. Obviously you'd have to have a pretty big problem if your bilge contained that much oil, but you sure wouldn't want to pump it overboard.

This pump switch technology is very unreliable...I bought one and the pump stopped working after 3 or 4 months. Either the circuit board failed from getting wet all the time with salt water, or possibly algae is growing in the switch/water level compartment, on the circuit board. SO... I bought a couple of new pumps that still use the built in physical float switch technology...peace of mind returned for me, Rule used to be dependable I hope they can get back there.

so let me get this straight. if my bilge has a little bit of oil remnants in it as most inboard or inboard/sterndrive boats do from either oil change accidents, or old age leaks and drips, jabsco feels its better for my entire boat to sink and release gasoline, motor oil, battery acid and trim fluid into the water, instead of pumping out a little oily water? which would be worse envirnomentally? 70 gallons of gasoline, a gallon of motor oil, 4 quarts of transmission fluid, and acid from two marine deep cycle batteries? no sale jabsco and i will not be purchasing any of your products. i see some severe law suits if someones boat sinks due to their computer board refusing to pump out water with a little oil sheen. his words, not mine "if it encounters any oil in the water it will shut down." make sure you steam clean your boats bilge if you buy this pump.

I agree with you, that's crazy - you can soak up oil in the bilge with specialised pads - bilge pumps are designed to stop a boat sinking and ultimately save lives.

I know this is an old video, but does anyone know if the new sensor parasitic draw? Does it draw power from the battery while it's not running?

Can I use white viniher to clean the Rule Mate bilge pump?

When cleaning a bilge pump or bilge area you may use Apple cider Vinegar. But, anytime vinegar is used on a boat it should be followed with rinsing very with regular water, and or if in a Head it should be followed with Head Lube. The vinegar will clean and kill bacteria, but if left too long on any of the rubber parts it could cause the rubber to crack over time.
