    Thank you for the updates. I have only lived in U Taphao for a year after moving from the safer area of Thung Sao in Hat Yai. My wife’s idea 🤔. We came very close to flooding and yes, the water has receded a little in this area near Wat Tha Sae. Been going through your videos and you provide great knowledge of the area. Thanks again.

      Thank you! From what I've been hearing, Thung Sao hasn't been that safe this past week, either! In 2010 I moved to a rented house in the Kate 8 area. In early November of that year, we were hit by Hat Yai's biggest ever flood. Unfortunately, it's part of living here. October, November, and December can be very wet. I'm now in Kuan Lung, near the airport, which is on high ground and fairly safe.
      Regarding the channel, I've been in Hat Yai since 2003 and know the town quite well. However, we have two young kids, and my wife works. Therefore, I can't do as much on the channel as I'd like to. My other responsibilities have to take priority.

      Thank you Phil. What a fascinating life you appear to have made yourself. I look forward to more time in Hat Yai and enjoy your information.

      I came across your channel at just the right moment. I’m moving to Hat Yai with my dog next year and arrived just one day before the flooding. There are few good resources about Hat Yai, so your channel turns out to be a golden addition in the scarcity. We managed to get my girlfriend’s family, including her bedridden mother, to safety just in time.

      @ricardodeooij4961 Well done helping your g/f's Mum. The flood I lived through in 2010 was physically and mentally exerting. It must be really traumatic being bedridden.
      Yep, there doesn't seem to be much about Hat Yai. A million channels about Pattaya, but not much down here! Thanks for your message 🙏

    Thank you so much for these updates. Supposed to be in Hat Yai in a weeks time, and heading to Penang via road after that. Fingers crossed the worst of it is over.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  12 дней назад +1

      @Noopz81 No problem! Hat Yai seems fine, and the situation should improve further this week provided there is no more torrential rain. Regarding your road trip to Penang, I have no idea what conditions are like on that route. I heard that things were quite bad in Sadao district near the border last week, but I don't know how it is now.

    My wife's family's house in Tung Sao was inundated in 2010 but has been spared (so far) this time. Yes, I think the local authorities are doing a much better job this time.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  12 дней назад +1

      Yep, 2010 was a LOT worse! The authorities have actually done a huge amount to the flood defense infrastructure since 2010, and this has really helped. Flooding used to be an annual event in Hat Yai, but up until last week there has been no significant flooding since 2010. As I said in the video, no matter how good the infrastructure is, there will always be storms every 10-15 years that overwhelm the flood defenses. It's just a fact of nature!

      @xundestravelfood7055 Sure. I'll let people know if things turn sour again. At the moment, there is no rain. It's a bit dark, and usually, I would expect it to be brighter at this time of day, but it's dry!

    Thailand i am told is basically a basin. Every year is indeed a worry. you are right, every decade, if hatyai doesn't improve the drainage of flood water further as well as cleanliness (as what i was told about 2010 flood), it will be a eventually another disaster. You take care mate. Good to see you've adapted to local life and culture!

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  12 дней назад

      It's interesting you should say that, because Hat Yai is in a big basin. Some years ago, I joined a group of Thais to go hiking in Rattaphum district. From up high, at a distance, you can clearly see that it is in a basin. I'm sure they will continue to improve the flood defense infrastructure, but they have done a lot already. This is why - up until last week - there has been no significant flooding since 2010. Regarding improving the cleanliness of the water, I heard recently that the local municipality has a plan to do this. As well as being a generally good thing to do, there is also a tourism aspect. For a long time there has been a plan to turn some of the canal network into a kind of little Venice where they could offer boat rides and have other attractions for tourists. It's taken me 21 years, but slowly I am adapting to local life and culture! Thanks for your comment 🙏

    In Narathiwat-Town the water is very slowly receding. The road in front of our house is still flooded. We live right next to the Bang Nara River, so any change in river level will be immediately noticeable. Fingers crossed for better times.
    Good luck in Hat Yai, Phil. My wife left Hat Yai for Yala yesterday, which was doable via Na Thawi. Now getting home to Narathiwat is a different matter.

      @saddq1 Good to hear that the water is receding. Thanks for the update! All of that flood water I saw yesterday morning had gone by yesterday evening. A report I read a couple of days ago said that Na Thawi was the worst affected district. As you say, fingers crossed! The rainy season still has another month to run.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  11 дней назад +1

      @ywtan2930 The honest answer is that I don't know. The wet weather went as far north as Nakhon Sri Thammarat. I've heard about problems on the road going out to Sadao on the Malaysian border. I haven't heard about any problems going north, but this doesn't mean there aren't any problems.
      It's dry at the moment and quite bright. The flood water I saw yesterday morning had gone by yesterday evening. I'm trying to be optimistic, but I've heard a couple of reports that there is more to come. If that happens, I'll post an update.

    Haadyai literally meaning Big beach. I had experience getting caught in the flood in Haadyai almost 40 years ago. Terrible 3 days without fresh water and electricity. No help whatsoever from authority. I stayed at Indra hotel at that time. It was one day before Loy Krathong festival and the whole of Haadyai turned into a big pond....LOL. Mae Khongkha must be angry.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  11 дней назад

      @Utube1024 Thanks for your comment. Im the past, flooding was a major issue in Hat Yai. However, the work that's been done in recent years has prevented floods most years.
      There are two theories regarding the name of the town - หาดใหญ่
      One is the big beach theory - หาดใหญ่
      The other is that it was named after a big tree called a ma-haat - ต้นมะหาดใหญ่
      Apparently, a large ma-haat tree used to be a prominent feature in the town.
      No one seems to know definitively which theory is correct.

      @@expatlivinginthailand Haadyai is like a large basin. I tried to take flight back but the road leading to the airport area still impassable so no choice got to take bus home. While having lunch at Sadao the people said they experienced no flood in the area at all. Even after 40 years flood still an issue...LOL.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  10 дней назад

      @Utube1024 You're right. I went hiking in Rataphum district many years ago. Looking down on Hat Yai from a distance, you can clearly see that it's in a basin.
      It has changed in the last 40 years ago. It used to be that there were floods every year. This recent flood was the first one in 14 years that caused big problems. Most rainy seasons are fine now.
