- In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Zugspitze along the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway in 4K/60 frames per second.
The Bavarian Zugspitze Railway (German: Bayerische Zugspitzbahn) is one of four rack railways still working in Germany. The metre gauge line runs from Garmisch in the centre of Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Zugspitzplatt, approximately 300 metres below Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. The line culminates at 2,650 metres above sea level, which makes it the highest railway in Germany and the third highest in Europe. It is also the railway in Europe with the biggest height difference: 1,945 metres, the lower half being open-air and the upper half being underground. The line is operated by the Bayerischen Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG (BZB), whose majority owner is the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Municipal Works.
The Cogwheel train is in operation for almost 100 years. Since 1930, locals and tourists alike have been able to reach the Zugspitze plateau and the famous golden summit cross in comfort.
It took 2 years of construction time for a Cogwheel train Zugspitzbahn. The cost of the project was 22 million Reichsmark. The train operates as a friction railway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and from Grainau, as a cogwheel train.
Elevation gain between the valley and top station: 1,010 metres
The line has a total of 19 km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Zugspitze plateau. During the construction of the cogwheel train, it was necessary to create a 4,453-metre-long underground route. The workers had to dig through the mountain massif between Riffelriss and Schneefernerhaus. 80,000 m3 of rock material was transported to the outside via shaking chutes.
Up to 2,500 workers were employed on the large construction site, sometimes under the most adverse alpine conditions.
For more information, you can access the website: zugspitze.de/en/About-us/Comp....
I would like to thank the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG for all the support and help to film this mythical German Railway journey that makes Germany’s highest mountain accessible to everyone.

Thanks for bringing back memories of my trip in May 1977. While serving in the US Army I had the pleasure of taking my mother, uncle and aunt on the train. None of them had ever been out of the USA before and the astonishment on their faces on that mountain lasted a lifetime. I really look forward to viewing your long videos during my retirement. Keep up the excellent work!
@larrycaldwell261 thank you very much for sharing your memories with us. I am so happy this video journey brought back good memories. I can imagine their faces... I found the trip amazing. Wishing you a nice day!
What an utterly quaint little railway ride. And the breath taking views at the top marvelous.
@bogs-dollocks Thank you.
I love this place. I visited Garmisch and surrounding area many times while I lived in Germany in the US Army. Thanks a bunch for this. Great memories
@joydivisionisnotdead1574 You are very welcome. I am glad that you could see this places again through this video.
Took a holiday group tour to Garmisch in 1973, Thanksgiving. What a great time, the cog train ride to near top, and then cable car the rest of the way. Finished off the day at a gasthaus for dinner, and bier.
@50buttfish Very nice tour!
C'est merveilleux. Merci d'avoir partagé cette vidéo
@bernardcochet5530 You are welcome.

The catenary is beautiful! I think it dates back about 80 years.
@lorirocks777 Yes, they are very elegant, I would say. Definitely different from others that I have seen until now.
Beautiful place. I've been there in this city a few times. Truly very nice for hiking and chilling. The Eibsee is beautiful there too! And of course this train ride is interesting. The train goes to 2525 metres and then there is a cable car for the last 400 metres.
@perfectguessrgeo It is beautiful. There was lots of snow at the top, very nice views. I will try to go there again for hiking.
Sehr schöne Route, danke fürs Teilen😀
@sopkeuning Danke. It really is a wonderful line. I liked it very much. The mountain railways are always different and something special.
Yeah, Zugspitzbahn 🥳✌️! Thank you very much for this fantastic Video 🤩🎥👍👍👍

@Pjs75 You are welcome.
Very, very cool. I really enjoyed this one. Such beautiful scenery and then the mystery being inside this long, twisting, turning tunnel.
@JKVisFX Glad you enjoyed it!
My girlfriend and I had a marvellous day using the Zugspitzbahn and then the cable car down finished off with a beautiful meal and wine at a hotel/restaurant at Eibsee.
@peternewman3487 It sounds very nice. I am sure you had a great day in this beautiful place.
Spettacolare!
@mozartmahler61 Grazie.
Thank you for this video. Nice and interesting cab ride with beautiful landscapes. These mountains rides are always interesting, even without sun. Nevertheless the sun will always be welcome.
@javierguidounicaud6621 I know. The sun always makes a difference.
Zugspitze! The Peak of Germany! The highest mountain in Germany! Garmisch Partenkirchen is a famous ski sport center! Nice scenery on Bavarian Alps! Close to Garmisch there 's a little town called Oberammergrau, with house with paintings and murales and drawings about Passionspiele (Passion's Christ). I knew about this line, but i have never been into!Very Particular trains! Obrigado sehnor!!!!!!!
@wladislaw79 Thanks for the info! I liked the scenery very much.
Great video!!!
@enricoalecce3801 Thanks.
A very nice mountain railway.🏔
The scenery is beautiful and the structure of the ZUGSPIZE TUNNEL is interesting ! 🚇
I like the direct connection between the railway and the ski resort.⛷
Thanks a lot.😻👍
@xeneelik5037 You are welcome.
Am happy that you enjoyed this time in Germany.

@norbertk.1473 Zou are very welcome. I am glad that you enjoyed the ride.
Even though I live nearby and have been to Garmisch, I've never ridden the funicular because somehow the fear of heights doesn't pull me up :D so I'll stay to watch this video
@Matz32 I hope you enjoyed watching it.
Wow! Thanks!
@rostilembe Our pleasure!
Wow, that's very close to the area where I was born and grew up. Thanks a lot for this video (when I visited my hometown Reutte in Tirol last March with my wife, we had planned a trip up to Zugspitze - but the weather was too bad).
I hope to see the Außerfernbahn line here on this channel - would be great!
@manfredkatzler8510 I am glad that you liked the video. I was quite lucky with the weather. On the afternoon, when I took the train back down, the weather was spectacular. The views on the lake and the countryside were just great in the sun.
@axelgellisch9521 I am glad that you liked it. yes, to go all the way up you have to take the cable car. The ride is just beautiful.
Thank you very much!!!
wow what an amazing journey
@jug6760 It really is!
Espetacular viagem. Grato pelas explicações a respeito dessa linha férrea.

@@RailRelaxation Hello again, if you should be travelling in Germany again in the Baltic Sea region and also film there. No one has ever filmed the Neubrandenburg-Stralsund route. I would be very happy about that. Just as a suggestion. 😉 best regards 😊

@carlos_r_g_jr De nada. Tenha um bom dia!
Danke fürs Mitnehmen 👍 Ich würde jedoch die Gondel bevorzugen 😁
@schnickschnack2090 I did not drive on the gondola. So I can not say which one is better.
Excellent and very interesting cab ride. The information in the HUD (altitude, speed and distance are based on GPS information which is not accurate that the displayed in the station names. Moreover, when in Zugspitze Tunnel and there is no satellite contact, the HUD information is dead. Thank you for this outstanding video.
@adamw1944 I always write that in the description of the video. The GPS data may be inaccurate.
@ElviraRainhadaCasa Realmente é.
@mchelolek714 Yes, probably this is why. I am glad that you enjoyed the ride. I definitely recommend it.
@wolframhesse1399 I am glad that you got an idea for another trip....

16:44 There--on the crossing--the traffic the train is paused for! :)
I took a quick look at the Zugspitze site, but there was no mention of the gauge. I'm assuming it is Schmalspur and perhaps 1,0 meter?
26:38 Note cable car starting middle right of screen!
35:43 To get a feel for how steep this is, see the "lean" of the trees to the right of the track.
@josepherhardt164 Nice observations. The line is 1 meter gauge, you can read more about the line in the description.
Great video.
@nerkonator Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.

17:12 Gets the green light while the barriers are still up! Odd.
I am surprised at the summit tunnel only having just the one fire door (that I could see) in its near 1000m of rise. There was an accident in Austria where a fire caused the tunnel to act as a chimney fueling the fire.
@briancooper562 I don't know if there are just one fire door, about this would have to check with the Company.
Super. Alle Informationen sichtbar (how does it make…?). Danke.
@bahnsimund6361 Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the weather is difficult. We have a saying in Portuguese, that you have to agree with St. Peter...
There is another one more east in Bavaria, leading up to the Wendelstein. And it is more picturesque at the upper end of the track.

Super gut!
@user-ds8ge6tw4b 😊
You wonder could they have eliminated the rack rail system between Grainau and Eibsee Station before the steep climb.
No they couldn't, I drove up to Bahnhof Eibsee with the car yesterday. It may not look to steep in the video but my car on the parallel street was working quite bit to get up there
Very nice, but from Eibsee it's best to take the cable car up to the top, because the final stretch of the railway is just one long tunnel through the mountain and you don't get to see anything!
@chuckmaurice3646 That is correct. Anyway, you don't get to se the landscape, but the tunnel is very interesting.
It is more interesting to get by the train to Zugspitzplatt and return by the cable car (and take a walk around Eibsee if time permits - it took me roughly two hours of a lazy stride).
@AlexanderElagin It sounds great. I took the train back..
I've taken the cable car up the Zugspitze, didn't know there was a train too. The cog wheels are really rubbing going around corners, must not be machined correctly.
@MidnightVisions Who knows next time you catch a train going up...
@vincenzocanta9783 Yes. Some of the are melting quite fast, I would say.

which camera and/or gps modul was used for this?
@BravuraLion Go Pro camera.
@norbertk.1473 It is an altitude above sea level. The data is GPS data and is not always accurate. That's why there are these differences.
