Freddie is my favorite trumpet player, all-time - he ‘says what he says’ and that’s that. His work on Speak no evil is beautiful. Great pull, gentlemen
@@jakemf1 sometimes those older kats sounded like their teachers or mentors, locally - I can hear both of those ‘masters’ but he could be a clone of one of his local heroes
Agreement adhered to. I run my own small business - toiling 7days a week - I had music lessons as a kid growing up (Royal Conservatory). As an adult I bought popular sheet music and that was mu thing until last Sept when my friend nudged me to restart piano lessons with their Jazz / classical friend. My music world has opened up. Being so busy, it can be hard to sustain the practising on this new deeper musical dive. Your coaching and empathy and keeping it real is important to fan the spark in me that keeps away the frustrations and keeps me motivated and understanding the learning process. Seeing you guys is like checking in with some musical pals. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for this guys--wonderful sensitive engaged reaction to an amazing performance by all of the masters on that stage. I was incredibly lucky to catch Freddie in NYC just about a year before the terrible lip injury that Peter mentioned. As in this video, he was simply astonishing both technically and musically. It was at the Blue Note and I'll never forget the utter incredulity in Freddie's voice when he called out the house from the stage: "Are you really having them push drinks while I'm up here playing?" Still cracks me up after all these years.
AGREEMENT ADHERED TO. As a music teacher you have been providing with so many useful ideas that are useful, insightful and most of all practical! Thanks soo much!
Guys, it wasn’t George Coleman on the original, there was no saxophone on the original Empyrean Isles album. If I remember correctly the 1976 version was recorded on different studio dates with “Headhunters” bandmate, Bennie Maupin, on Tenor. Herbie played and recorded with so many different bandmates and groups over the years that it’s difficult to keep track of who’s actually playing on the track that you’re listening to.
I remembered Us3 sampling this, but I forgot about trying to play this track as a hippy jam song🤣. I think it maybe wasn't so great in that context... maybe we just weren't very good at it🤣 Agree mint add here, too!
Another great, and informative episode of one of my favorite Podcasts. It is good to get reminded, that there is so much information hidden in each tune, if you take the time to listen. Thanks guys.
I like how Freddie layed out on the turnaround of the 1st chorus, Herbie played some extra rhythmic stuff and then Freddie came in with super fast rhythmic hit ideas from it. Did they add a vamp before Herbie's solo or did I lose track of the form?
besides all the useful stuff you guys talk about, this podcast feels almost like some sort of well written sitcom, a la springfield or something, you two compliment each other's personalities really well
Sophmorically u feel the desire to win 1)Torre s 3rd best mgr in Yankee history 2)Joe G s a pretty good mgr himself who had a bad run inPhilly Where his replacement took Philly to WS same year he was fired 3),Buck was a great mgr/ teacher in minors and did a good job w NY and Balt.. But never won anything 4)Stick was the architect not Buck And George was lucky he didn't ruin Yanks.. His suspension saved the day 5)Only 1 guy could have won 4 out of 5 in those days.. Master amateur. psychologiat. Joe Torre
Thank you for this great episode! Also loving this version of Cantaloupe with Chad Metheny, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, also here Herbie's solo is amazing: ruclips.net/video/5KNL0_sis1k/видео.html
Freddie's ornaments are things of beauty.
Freddie Hubbard had the most swag of ANY trumpet player !
And that's what i loved about his playing.

Lots of Clifford and Fats in his playing! Always loved Hub

Freddie was the sole horn on the date with the original Canteloupe Island. Playing Cornet!

It always strikes me how much Freddie Hubbard and Joe Hendersen can rely on each other to bring it.
Killer duo
I love how Adam unironically said the meme of “one of the rhythm sections of all time”

Great hearing you make sense of whatever it was that Herbie was doing during his solo!
Greetings from Namibia. Keep up the good work.

All that anyone seeks in a Jazz education is right there in you two (amazing yourselves) boys.
No need to change that dial. 👏

Hey Adam! What you know about... *adheres to agreement*
lovely!
I am thereby leaving a comment as per the gentlemen's agreement. And no, I am NOT a lawyer. Just a goofball computer programmer and pianist. 😎🎹
This is basically V.SO.P. with Joe Henderson in place of Wayne Shorter. They still bring the magic though
Agreement adhered to…
Agreement adhered to… it seems to be particularly adhesive, actually. How do I get it off the bottom of my shoe?

Not long ago in a Jazz Club not that far away....
Freddie’s fire is what I’m missing from most trumpet players these days, especially the ones over here in Europe. It’s all whiny, airy fluff.

I don't see it as an agreement so much as an awfully good deal
Blip
This is incorporeal improvisation….to catch this on film is beyond historical measure.
