A little about Ed….
Ed is an elite cyclist, 2019 British Hill Climb Champion and former Under 23 British RR Champion. He has raced as a Continental level Professional Rider for one of the most successful British cycling teams in Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada, Azerbaijan to name a few. He is also a public speaker, coach, and founded the on/offline cycling community, Backpedal. At the start of 2021, the Discord community began, and plonked many of Ed's viewers in to a 550+ strong group of people that had many things in common. Not least wanting to explore the world and pedal their bikes faster!
Ed coaches lots of cyclists in the online community too! If you are interested, email [laverackcoaching@yahoo.com] for information on the 1-2-1 coaching package and training plans, of which there are many and flexible options to suit everyone!
Ed now prioritises having fun with my hard earned fitness and knowledge in the sport. Showcasing that maybe there is an alternative to racing for teams when you can race for yourself and your community of followers and brands. This RUclips channel is a docu-series highlighting what it’s like to be a cyclist in today’s competitive age of sport.

Inspirational time Ed well done brilliant effort and build up to the nationals enjoying your videos 💪💪😎
Just starting to watch the vids, you're a nutcase, casual 44 km cool down with 2 extra hill climbs.
Just in time for the BIG ONE!
Nice one Ed.👍 It was very comforting to see that I'm not the only one who sniffs their bottle. 3:00.😂 My wife keeps asking me, "why do you keep sniffing your bottle?"
😁HAHA!
Great way to start. Keep doing what your doing 😊.
Congrats on the win Ed, massive watts!!! 💪💪💪
Well done Ed & enjoyable vid! 👍🏻
Excellent start to hopefully a fruitful HC season.
Wishing you every success this season Ed. That looked like a skinny road!
Super result Ed! building nicely for the big one
I always love your positivity in your videos. Well done on the win Ed!
Thank you, I try!
Another inspiring video Ed, many thanks 🙏
My pleasure!
That was an immense effort 👌 Chapeau....on to the next. 💪👏
Definitely!!
Weetabix powered win! 💪🏼💪🏼 Congratulations and well done Ed! 👊🏻👊🏻
Yes! Thank you!
The numbers are truly impressive ! congrats
Thank you!
Nice one 👌💪
I'm so envious of Englands hill climbing culture. Would be quite difficult doing it here in Sydney, lots of good hills though.
Why would it be difficult? Could you just do an unofficial event using a Strava segment?
UP UP UP
You make hill climbing look like a casual walk. Crazy power numbers!
Just making sure I'm frequently good so that I can be occasionally great lol
I was at this hill climb. Only live 30 minutes away, but still found it a bit of a struggle getting there so early. I respect the effort 👏
Nice one Adam, loved the event once again!
Awesome effort Ed!!!
Thanks!
Excellent start my friend, hope your power crank armament can withstand all those watts you're putting though it!
I hope so too😂
Oh, someone's had their Weetabix... Well done, butty 😉
The speed!! Looks like my timewarps 😂
Very well done 👏
Thank you!
Nice one Ed... congrats on the win. That's my patch. My best is 8:46... I can't imagine doing it at twice that speed! Really lets me know just how awesome you guys are.
That turning where you finished is called Fiery Lane and it's one of the hardest climbs in the area... very narrow and very rough and very steep (25% in places).
Didn't know about that lane! You area is cool, really enjoy riding around here!
@@edlaverack There's loads of tough climbs in and around Dursley and Wotton... believe it or not Lampern Hill (Stouts Hill) is one of the easier ones! Chalford over in Stroud has some proper brutes as well, especially on the north side of the valley.
Just notice you smashed The Feather's time on Haresfield Beacon... now that's impressive on an absolute brute of a hill. I've only done it once and nearly died! 😆
It's manageable until the final section which caught me by suprise, if I knew the climb I could go faster again I think.
@@edlaverack I noticed you also got the KOM on Frocester Hill. That's very, very impressive... it's a very popular segment. The Tour of Britain goes up there now and again. Andrew is not gonna be happy! 😄
lovely mate! drinks for the boys tonight!
Oh yeah!
nice
👍
Great effort! Which intervals / training efforts would you recommend to build 5 minute power Ed?
All of them, is the honest answer. You want to be able to do as much volume/Z1 and 2 training as you can tolerate. With some VO2max and Anaerobic capacity work sprinkled in. Its a fine balance. There's only so far you'll go with no volume, likewise there's only so far you'll go with the intensity. Then rest really well and even having 2 weeks of virtually no intervals and lots of freshness and you'll likely smash a 5min PB out the park.
👍👍💪💪❤️❤️
Hi Ed, first of all congrats! Great feeling when the effort you've put in this past weeks give fruits.
Q: Doesn't fuelling just before bed interrupts your sleep a bit? I always have that feeling.
Also, I know you've already covered a bit your fuel but for a typical race like this, what do you eat the day before and for breakfast for fast short efforts?
Again, congrats and keep the power 💪💪
Hey Hey! It depends how big the meal is, this was a small one. You may find that carbs actually HELP you sleep, a HEAVY meal that might be high in fat could cause restless sleep and digestion issues though. I'll cover what I eat in the build up to the race in a video soon :)
Thanks a lot, looking forward to it!!!
@@edlaverack ah also forgot to ask, what's your take as a climber on supplements like Creatine and Beta Alanine?
Creatine isn't worth it imo. Beta Alanine possibly, but for well trained riders it has less of an impact. A supplement will only really work if all the other basic boxes are ticked and you can't find improvements from anywhere else@@joaoasilva
LFG
😍
Hi Ed. Great video. What are those aero socks?
They are from Rule28
You did too much Zwift-races, already pushing 450 watts while still standing 😉
weetabix is ultra processed and strawberries are a low sugar fruit that slows the digestion of glucose, its all about the rice n bananas imo although you didnt go too bad lol congrats on the win butty, topclass : )
Seemed to work…
4 Weetabix OMG 😂
7.7 w/kg jeez
Where do you place the cleat? All the way back?
Yes, I’ve had it all the way back ever since I started cycling back in 2010 as it happens
@@edlaverack How close is the cleat placed towards the 5th metatarsal?
No idea@@DevelopingNL
I would really like to know? Do you ever get knee pain on zwift with the wattage you put out?
Dumb question: why no handle bar tape?
Lighter
Just take it off because it's not needed. Weirdly though I like the look of no tape, in my head I feel like it makes the bike look faster when I look down, marginal gains and all that.
That POV angle is really disturbing with your chin poking in all the time. Otherwise loved the video, great effort mate, excellent work!
I’m still trying to figure out the best place to put it. If I love it more towards my shoulder it misses my chin but it’s really difficult because of my movement 🙈
im suprised to see disc brakes hmm
I have been the last 2 years
@@edlaverack at least going up hills its less dangerous. do you worry about strong riders on rim brakes getting that marginal gain?
No @@timtaylor9590
You're very strong but what if you lost by a few seconds. I'm not so sure about these paper thin 600 gram frames that have to make up for extra weight in the braking system. A thicker tube does mean stiffer. But I also understand you have to make the sponsors happy.
No one ‘likes’ weetabix. People tolerate weetabix
