The thing is, these animations range from whenever they added animated ults after the game came out in 2013, to 2023. I know you had an objective approach, but just keep in mind that for example, the Fu Hua animation with the Phoenix is MANY years apart from Herscher of Sentience Fu Hua. That's why there's such a contrast in quality. Great video btw!

Yes. Honkai Impact's uniqueness comes from the fact that they keep a lot of the legacy, including early story narrative styles and simpler ults. Where most people new coming in would criticise with "what is this cheap-looking garbage?", the increasing changes in quality and animation starts showing as you progress up the ladders in character acquisition and story progression. I'm usually miffed with people constantly dunking on the early parts of the game, but I recall fondly the legacy that we have experienced, and I wouldn't want it to go away. PS: Also valid criticism of the old ults from around 2017-2019 perhaps, since those were "cool" for their time. You probably won't know this but some unique battlesuit costumes have modified ultimate effects, but you won't have access to them unless someone provides you the clips.

Flamescion here in the vid had the effects after the impact frames hidden by the shitty map wall. Would've looked way better if the showcase was a different map.
This game being Hoyo's first 3D game makes it bound to have inconsistencies in quality imo but damn when they hit, they HIT good fr. Also, the animated shorts 👌👌👌

19:50 they tried SO HARD with finding a pose. The betas are all public and recorded on youtube. One can go through all the versions of her poses, its so funny. They wouldve kept going if they had time, im sure.
Let's not forget that Senti is a support unit, not a DPS. You wouldn't know because she can do astronomical levels of damage....if you finesse her enough. With the addition of the latest premium weapon, the BRICK, she became a DPS.
Why would there be those black bars exist either way?? Like why do those even exist? I get it those black bars exist because then you would have easier time to read the subtitles in any movies and Anime but this is a game why would Mihoyo also decide to put black bars in her Ultimate too? Those bothers me i want the whole thing of it just full screen like every other Ultimates too
@@Shadow82311it’s like a cinematic film where the bars sort of cut off part of the frame. Then it zooms out along with the bars disappearing that creating a more dramatic zoom out (is what I’m assuming at least).
the main takeaway here is that a lot of these ults are just held back by the dated graphics. they have some great ideas but like you said, the facial expressions kinda pale in comparison with the newer games like HSR and ZZZ. still for a mobile game that's like what ? 7 or 8 years old ? they actually cooked.
@@kuvjason7236 nope, all 4 use Unity, however HI3 is held back by the fact that it still uses old rigs and is a mainstream mobile game + it's a really old game. I don't think Hoyo has ever used any other game engine but Unity. It just comes down to how old it is, what rigs they still use, and what platform they're trying to cater to. HSR and GI is luckily enough to cater to PC and high end consoles meaning that they can increase the quality without compensating for performance albeit Genshin's quality is lackluster when it comes to in-game models (that can be explained for many reasons though)
It's great to see where Mihoyo's animations began. We started with this, and now we have Zenless Zone Zero, where the robot character has the most squash and stretch, and 13 out of 16 ultimates so far have impact frames. Mihoyo have always been amazing animators

There were *so many* that he missed. Wait until he finds out there are, like, six or so Bronyas that he didn't cover (even if some of them aren't that good visually).
Looks like it was cut from the video. Look at where he's pointing out critiques for Adam's Ultimate. The frames we see is from his 2nd ult, despite us only seeing the first ult in the video.
We did it, he actually made a video for da Honkai ultimates! Edit: I felt like there were quite a bunch missing though, like all the APHO2 characters have at least 2 ultimates, there was none of the Sakuras, none of the Himekos, no Starlit Astrologos (one of my favorites) ect. Not sure if they were cut out for the YT video or if they weren't in the video he watched on stream.
Most of the ultimates usually do not stop the timer on fights and with every second your scores goes down, I want them as short as possible... unless they made them to stop/slow the timer, timestop is a thing in the game.
10:10 that is not her attacking backwards, she went and extended the claws towards her back, and swung it towards the enemy for more momentum, the whole three sequence of her attacks are totally meaningful, but the last sequence where the silhouette is confusing… i can agree with
15:00 going to comment here: I do agree with your observations, as despite the way reality works in Honkai, the animations still need work for most. Anyway, Carole isn't actually wearing her gauntlets, they instead float near her fists. It's actually noticeable in the victory screen if you end the stage with her.
Having less pauses and frames are important for those ults with no time stop effect on them sp the faster the better gameplay wise. That's why moonbeam is rarely used for her ult. For HoF she did have a short (broken) sword and during her turn the floating shards she has fuses with the sword that's why its long after her slash but its only noticeable if you pause it and know where to look

Would be cool to see your reaction on the skins with different effects. There's not a lot of them, but some skins cahanges the effects drastically. For example Time Runner for Herrscher of Flamescion Kiana and cat-swimsuit skin for the Herrscher of Finality Kiana. Yeah, I mention two Kianas but because I really like the effects on them.
Your insights into these animations as an animator are extremely nice to hear and I won't lie, I would absolutely love for you to watch the cinematic animations they do for the story as well.
These are some fantastic critiques! I love that fact that you are still impressed by some of them even when they rank low and they way you describe why you rank them the way you do is so easy to understand. Even though I have no idea what would look good during any of these animations other than big sword go boom, I can totally agree with every point you bring up. "Yeah that totally would have looked better if sword/space/face etc." I think a couple of other commenters have brought up the same but I would love to see your critiques of PGR especially. Either way keep these coming, they're great!
Funny to mention about dead eyes. A lot of the characters models does not have a 3d face (at least the old ones), they're Texture. It's obvious when you play as old Fu Hua and Sakura battlesuits. Don't think they'll update the design. Plus in general they don't have a very expressive emotion unless the ultimate is very close up to their face
I remember being in the Japanese side of the community.. There was a meme showing the animated shorts for the game with the caption "What anime is that?" And below it, it says "It's a game." with Honkai's logo. Will always love this game more than Genshin or Star Rail, especially as someone who's played it for a fairly long time, the current features available is so good for both F2P and P2W. Also, I didn't think I enjoyed someone's reaction to these ult animations this much.. Loved it! Much love man!

So fun fact, certain Ultimates have alt versions based on the skin used, and the final ones seen actually also have alternative versions themself, as each of the 5 last ones have 2 Ultimates. And they are ALL good!
I almost never leave comments and this will probably get buried but I loved watching you analyze all the ultimate animations in HI3! I've been playing this game for years and years so I definitely have rose tinted glasses but it was really refreshing for you to look at this from an objective, technical stance. Most times I get distracted by the pretty vfx and colors but I learned a lot from your video!

What makes it more impressive is that there are some gameplay restrictions where these animations have to work, e.g. some animations have to be a specific length
Since I saw your reacting to honkai: star rail video I've been paying more attention to the animations of every game I play, I'm in no expert when it comes to animating, but seeing and appreciating the little details has made playing more fun for me. One I've been loving so far it's epic seven's skills animations, you should check them out, they have A LOT of characters and constantly realising new ones, so maybe only reacting to the moonlight characters would be best. I really like your content, keep it up!

In 10:57, it really wasn't done yet Bright Knight Excelsis has a special weapon, much like how Senti had the brick So BKE Durandal's special weapon is something called Abyss Flower Liminal Spiral, and that gives her a 2nd ult animation that shows a full moon in the bg so I'd say you try looking into that

I absolutely love watching these video, they're so entertaining! I'd love to see you rank their ending poses (They're not that long so I'm not sure if it can be a full video) it's probably the best part of ending the stage with certain characters :D
You should also check some of hi3rd’s animated shorts like Final Lesson, Shattered Samsara, or Everlasting Flames. Hi3rd has some of the best animations for their game to the point I wish they’d add similar animations to Genshin and star rail at some point
Also one thing to note for the bits that aren't part of the actual cinematic, you can control the camera angle for those bits so that is also something to consider.
Also, the reason why Vill-V's drop fast is that if the hat takes to long to drop, people will not pull for her because she eats away too much buffs duration. lol

I definitely agree! I can't imagine how good some of these concepts would look if Hi3 was made today.
The game engine is also entirely different than what GI/HSR and ZZZ uses.

Yoo you should do PGR next, I like their animations bc of small details but sometimes the ults are lackluster (for older characters)
I am so glad you checked out HI3! Especially with a-lot of the ults being references towards the actual story! This game is so snappy with the gameplay and I’m glad someone is giving credit towards the animators
They have a new one, Griseo, the painter, she has an adult version and she uses a certain type of weapon from a certain galaxy far far away

What makes it more impressive is that there are some gameplay restrictions where these animations have to work, e.g. some animations have to be a specific length
Since I saw your reacting to honkai: star rail video I've been paying more attention to the animations of every game I play, I'm in no expert when it comes to animating, but seeing and appreciating the little details has made playing more fun for me. One I've been loving so far it's epic seven's skills animations, you should check them out, they have A LOT of characters and constantly realising new ones, so maybe only reacting to the moonlight characters would be best. I really like your content, keep it up!

Bright Knight Excelsis has a special weapon, much like how Senti had the brick
So BKE Durandal's special weapon is something called Abyss Flower Liminal Spiral, and that gives her a 2nd ult animation that shows a full moon in the bg so I'd say you try looking into that

You should also check some of hi3rd’s animated shorts like Final Lesson, Shattered Samsara, or Everlasting Flames. Hi3rd has some of the best animations for their game to the point I wish they’d add similar animations to Genshin and star rail at some point

11:25 It's not a cinematic, it's a free cam. Player can move the camera, so you can't blame in-frame positioning.
