Genshin has some amazing animations. Despite what I might say, keep in mind all of these animations are already incredible. It's hard to choose just one, so the nitpicking was a necessary evil. Huge props to the Genshin art and animation team for what they do!

Yeah I honestly feel like this is super biased. Yelan really doesn't stand out any differently than a lot of the other characters. I'm at least glad he didn't fall into the Raiden path but still, feels biased.

@@truedarkknight0882 Saying professional animator made me think it would be more educational and less biased. The fact he said Ayaka's was way cooler than Ayato's despite them being practically the same is a bit disappointing. I was hoping to learn WHY the bursts were good or not in more detail. There's a very clear biased towards the females of the game, especially if you consider the fact that Raiden's animation really isn't that impressive compared to something like Cyno's which has more movement, more to animate, and a more dynamic angle. Also saying something like "Hu Tao's has more of a character driven thing" while not taking character personalities into consideration for others is also weird since it's supposed to be based on animation alone and not the knowledge of the character themselves.
I feel like the only reason why we don't get longer burst animations is purely due to the fact that Genshin combat is so time based

Same Zhongli's ult is cool but I feel every milisecond that I'm losing whenever I'm in the abyss or a domain
They're all short separately, but when I'm trying to set up supports for my main dps (for example, Cyno-Baizhu-Fischl-Nahida) I get extremely anxious over how fucking long some of the ults can take LOL.

@@Kompoteek at the end of his burst don't move as it will cancel the ending animation so he won't suffer an unnecessary hit. Its pretty sensitive too so you really cannot do anything when he pops out the hat

She was primarily a 5 star before but hoyo made her a 4star instead before release.
Thats why she has a burst animation and her C6 revives one dead character.

Tbh Xiao’s ult is basically his normal, charged and plunge attacks. His animation on cast has no reason to be super hard. He is simply unleashing a power up
Yeah, the whole point of his short burst animation is because the casting of the ult itself at the start of the fight is crucial to his kit, which means it would be more annoying than satisfying to watch an animation of his mask appearing on his face, than to just watch him pop it on and go back into combat

Cyno and Xiao are just simple animation of transformations because *Their actual burst is the fucking rest*. especially with Raiden being so much higher, I definitely agree. Cyno has a very cool burst animation and while Raiden looks intimidating and powerful, so does Cyno. He deserved better
Ayato's burst animation is lackluster but, the burst itself of ripples and petals, is so pleasing to look at!
I feel like if you judge Keqings burst based on the effect that happens after her cinematic shot, you have to give the same treatment to everyone and in that regard Ayato should rank much higher. The visuals are so good to look at and fit his character so well. If you don't take that into account then Keqing's burst is mid as well as it's literally just her looking over her sword

aside petals and ripples, even though I like a lot of characters animations, ayato skill alone is definitely top 3, which is funnily, basically is what his whole kit relies on.

I have to disagree, Yelan's burst feels rather simple to me. I do like those more high energy bursts like how we see from Wriothesley Lyney and Raiden.

Tbh this is from an 'how well was the animation' standpoint not 'how good the ultimate' looked and Yelan just ranked higher due to the reasons he listed in the end.

Honestly Yelan's burst animation is one of my favourites. It's simple, dynamic, looks interesting with and without camera angles.
Keep in mind Dillon is a fight animation choreographer. Neuvillette's animations look good from a cinematographic and SFX PoV, but it's super lackluster when you look at the posing and transition frames. It's the complete opposite of Yelan where her entire aesthetic is stylish movements, while Neuvillette's aesthetic is stern and god-like elegance. Two different strengths that really can't be compared.
I think you need to take into consideration the animation effects a Burst might have on the caster's Normal Attacks or Elemental Skill, and vice versa. I noticed you did consider them for Miko and Raiden, but not for others, like Itto, Kokomi, and Cyno. The changes are very noticable.

Plus Childe meelee burst has special effects hitting Riptide enemies and one of the most satisfying if against group
Theres also the fact the bigger is the animation, the worst it becomes because it does not stop enemies or time.

@@alexprus7953 I understand, but when you make art theres a demand behind it, if you ignore these demands you cant think properly about the art, it would be the same as judging pixel art, but thinking into AAA 3D games.
As a Sound Design student, I think Wriosthelsey is severely lacking when it comes to the sound. It is very impactful visually, but the sound is VERY lackluster. It doesn't have that setup, anticipation and pay off that you see in the animation. I feel like if they put more emphasis on that jet and impact, it would be SS for me.
Animation wise, I think when he swings, they should've made the camera swing a little more harshly to match the energy of the punch. In game, it kind of just looks like a powerpoint transition LULUL
TRUTH. Sound is a very important part of why Neuvillettes hits harder imo
OOH you’re right! They could have made Wrio’s sound effect crispier. There is a sound but it’s not very noticeable or maybe bec it happens too fast? Because with Neuvillette, the bell toll sound is quite loud and you can’t miss it. Lyney has his own fun little carnival bgm during his burst (in animation and during his cat form)… Though I have been playing Wrio, and his burst is satisfying in combat haha. It feels like it hurts, from a visual standpoint. Sound, it’s kind of the usual ice swish blizzard sound they us. but i dont really know how they could have improve it.. 😅

Some of these i don't quite agree with. I'm not an animator but i do think some of these rankings don't make sense to me. Like Eula being so high but then Kazuha who's slash and build up is almost identical, and then the field too added.
Then we have wanderer where a lot is put in and you even said it tells you a lot, but that's A tier, but then Yelan's where the isn't really a lot going on, is ranked S.
Same with Nadida. So much detail has gone into it and i'd consider it an S too
@@tartagliax804 I wouldn't say all his ranking is bias to waifus, but most of them definetely are. One of the thing I also don't like is how he lets Al-Haitham be in A tier bc the excuse of lack of movement in the burst make sense to his character, but then drop Baizhu down to C tier for the exact same reason (lack of movement, being only him swinging his arm like Albedo) but forgot to take into consideration that it made sense and in-character for Baizhu to only do that bc dude is literally sick/had weak physical condition and it would make less sense had Baizhu moved around alot in his burst. Also Keqing burst being S tier despite the lacking animation in her burst (discounting the after one) but then kick Ayato down to C tier even when he shares the same amount of movement in his. He loves Keqing after-burst animation but then immediately ignored Ayato after-burst animation with the water droping down and the pretty detailed water petals around him.
He complains about a certain aspect of a character burst, throw them in a lower rank but then 5 seconds later he forgot about it and praise another character that share the same problem as the previous one for some odd reason and put in high tier (Also he just rank based on how flashy they are in some of the burst). Dude calls himself "professional animator" but then judge animations with pure bias and forgetting several aspect that he took consideration in other character but not the rest.
(I came from the HSR ultimate animation ranking and my opinion on this dude ranking is still the same. Several character getting butchered to lower tier (B or C) just because it's not flashy (or as he like to calls it, "anticipating") enough for him. Although there's some that I do agree with, still doesn't change that I feel like half of the character there get thrown down the lower tier for some odd, illogical reason)

He literally said that Kazuha's slash went by too quick while Eula's has better anticipation, he's judging it by the QUALITY of the animation not just what is BEING DONE, and yea there are some inconsistencies and sure he is biased but consider 2 things: he's streaming(trying to be entertaining) and he's fucking human, meaning ofc hes gonna make mistakes. Y'all are just being super picky

So far, I’d say Lyney’s burst is the best animation wise, Neuvillette has the best burst cool-wise and Yelan’s might be the most unique one.

Nah nah. Neuvilet's animation better than Ye Lan. I'm not a fan of both but if we are chosing, personality over quality because it's a gacha game. And i can FEEL Neuvilet's status, presence and pressure. While Ye Lan... pretty and dicey - just ok, no goosebumps.
Imho liney is ahead of everyone else by so much. I dislike his personality and outfit and playstile, but that burst alone nearly made me pull for him. It's soo well made and convey so much of the character.

Xiao's burst animation is simple because the real effects are on his plunges and normal/charged attacks. The animation doesn't do any damage so it's short for gameplay's sake. Also, as Fontaine characters are the newest and their animations have greatly improved over time, it's likely their ultimates will all be S or high A tier. I'm interested to see how this list will look once all of them are released.

I cant name myself a professional animator, but I did animate my own models a bit as a hobby, and so I understand the process behind. And so, hearing at the start of the video "a professional animator reaction" I was expecting a strictly technical analisys of the animation. But, honestly, that was very biased toward certain characters. Placing Hu Tao in A for "character" and then B for Yoimiya when they are equaly good, if we speaking about "character" aspect of the burst and fitting it is. Ayato does not deserve C if we, again, considering "character" as one of the aspects of the final grade. Also, very strong bias towards Yelan. A lot of characters in A grade have better bursts than Yelan.
So, as a personal tier list I wont say anything, cause thats a personal opinion I wont argue with, but that wasnt really a professional opinion.
But 8:29 Barbara 0:04 is not a 5 star character?
@ Umm, Im not sure what it has to do with my comment, but Barbara has a 5* burst animation (with dynamic camera movement) because in beta she was gonna be a 5*, but then close to release she was demoted to 4*, but developers didnt have time or simply didnt care to rework her burst animation to fit it into 4* grade.
Or at least thats a tale that was told since release, I dont know if its actually true or not.
@@YiorKha I know all that, but he said in the video that he will only look at the animation of the five star characters and therefore Barbara will be excluded regardless of whether she has an animation of a five star character or not. He was referring to the fact that he wants to judge animations of the five stars five star and therefore he should only consider the five star characters.
Sorry, I'm from Germany and I take such statements very seriously, if you say five star then you should only take five star characters.

A big factor of why animations in the game can feel “too short” is the fact that the animations have to be quick because time plays such a big part in the combat. Due to this, it can be hard to extend parts. An example would be some people criticizing Zhongli’s burst feeling too long or slow. You’re constantly on a time limit in the game with so much off the content, especially spiral abyss where the time you take to complete it is what matters. This is why the animations can’t really be that long.

I love Yelan’s ult so much but neuvillette just hits diff, and Lyney’s is just so cool. I’d personally to neuvillette, Lyney, then yelan.
The issue with Genshin ult animations is that they need to be short or they become a detriment, they don’t have Time-Freeze like in Honkai or a turn-based game like Honkai.
Cool idea, would love to see a similar video for Star Rail ults, or the cinematics for Honkai Impact 3rd.

Ngl I feel like having to fit the burst animations into a 1-2 second time window so it doesn't slow down gameplay too much is what really restricts some of the other characters' burst animations.
Also if you ever plan on doing this again can you maybe do it with Star Rail? I wanna hear some of your thoughts on the ult animations there as well
Keqing burst goes for like 3~4 seconds tho (if you don't animation cancel), it's no reason tbf
@@STARZZgenshin the animations itself is around 4 seconds total, but you can start attacking again around 2 seconds after casting it, so gameplay wise, it’s still only 1-2 seconds
@@SF3L Nah, gameplay wise most Keqing Mains who minmax her build (and use no healers) Abuse the 4 seconds of I-frames for dodging and conserving stamina.
It's super underrated bc the 4 seconds of I-Frames is MASSIVE.

It's the most frame heavy animation in the game, they really put a lot of effort into this, you can even check frame by frame.

There’s something about Wriothesley’s burst that tickles the unga bunga in my brain. I love him and Heizou for being catalyst users who eschew the “mage” archetype for being elemental brawlers, especially Wriothesley’s more aggressive boxing attacks and skill.

The fidelity is not great on mobile, which is the video you were watching for the animations, not sure if that would affect your decisions but just putting that out there
I love animation, but only doing this whit the "cutscene" doesn't help whit the ranking + for some characters have an élémental normal attacks (Kokomi fishes are little bigger and water effects are more notable, Raiden Ei has "her" Katana, Itto normal ult attacks change effects and has a spécial charged utl attack and I hope I didnt let other characters behind) But I understand why you did just the "cutscenes" elemental burst

I wish you would've chosen footage that was not recorded on low graphics settings. On high settings on PC or PS5 the models, animations and particle effects have extra oomph and flair. You mentioned the close up of Mona's face model not holding up. Well, that was because these bursts seem to be recorded at potato settings. ;)
I am currently working on an animation that has a moment similar to an Elemental burst. After trying to make one myself, i realise how many VFX go into one of these. I've added a few effects and the frame still looks empty.
Also, besides bursts, I do love that his charge attack is the same as Ayaka's normal attack ender, and his normal ender is the same as her charged attack. Lol Nice bit of sibling asymmetry.

I just started this but I can't take you seriously after you put Venti's burst you called basic above Diluc's burst which you said has a cool phoenix , where both bursts is almost identical in idea and execution. You're literally contradicting your own words, brother.
I don't see what makes yelan better than keqing or raiden shogun or neuvillette.

I see why he likes Yelan over Lyney's. While both are, functionally doing the same thing which is posing,, the execute it very differently.
Yelan's still has the sense of conservation of movement, which is something that this youtuber REALLY likes. That and impact frames. The camera and framing transfers her body's turning momentum into the string and the die to get those great string arcs and that spinning die arcing across the screen. Then when you get that pause for the pose, the die is still spinning so it turns into an anticipation moment rather than a pause. Then the animation gives you that payoff by exploding the die in the foreground and zooming the camera out for the final pose where she's framed by the strings on the field. She's standing still, the strings are similarly still and the black screen is working with the camera to draw your eyes completely towards her. It makes her the focus coming out of the ulti and the pose itself is dynamic and uses her character model to get those nice, clean, long lines to compliment the strings around her. Yelan, her strings and her die all work together to form a cohesive concept with her at the center.
By contrast, Lyney is not the focus of his ult, his hat is. You get a brief look at him and his winking expression before the camera zooms out and he throws his hat in the air. He disappears into, what we assume is the hat, but the ulti doesn't communicate that very well. The hat has great momentum as it moves up into center then arcs out and it has taken over as the focal point. But the background and the FX don't escort it along to give the camera a sense of movement to compensate for a lack of limbs or that nice long shape language that communicates a transition. So, when you're moving to control the hat and it's a little jarring because the camera doesn't move with it and it feels more like a "We're here now" rather than a natural progression. And then the black cat with the black hat against a bright flash of a background that then turns black and relies on the spotlights just doesn't help, in my opinion.
On the flip side, we have the final pose of him jumping up, but it feels very static and weightless. We have his upward movement and expanding body, but again, nothing is moving with him so the upward movement feels floaty rather than as actual movement. So with that, we're now relying on the foreground action lines, but those are going away from him which just robs him of even more momentum. So...now we're really relying on the cat FX, which feels like it detracts from his posing, in my opinion, because it's so much larger than he is. I kind of feel like the cat's engulfing him so Lyney can get lost in it. Aside from that, the communication is not very good, in my opinion. If you'd have told me that Lyney was a Geo character, I'd have believed you. I know he has the fire effects going, but I would not have directly connected them to him. They're kind of out of the way and seem like they're a part of the confetti rather than an indicator of Lyney's element.
This is juxtaposed to Vill-V's ult, in HI3rd, which I feel like communicates the whole magician character to hat to gameplay transitions much better. We see her with the hat, we see her throw the hat down, we see her in the hat and we see the hat turn into a tank which is now player controlled and we get great camera movement to transition the player from character to ulti cutscene to that tank gameplay.
Lyney's Burst is flashy and bright and it has an interesting concept, but I think the execution of it could've been better. And Yelan is just objectively better from an animation standpoint as his mirror. Everything works together to compliment the character in these frames for her, whereas poor Lyney is in competition with his own FX and hat.
Just my opinion, of course.

FRRR like everyone also saying Neuvillette like yeah the effects are cool and all, but it’s the full burst in general and his is just lacking in character. Lyney’s burst is cool and all, but those few seconds of being a cat really draws out the feeling. Yes, I do have a Yelan pfp, but Yelan’s is pretty great. Her effects go hard and the simple posing and stature of her body and the small detail of personality on her face makes her burst satisfying (for me at least) everytime I use it. Everyone also not trusting Goo when he said it isn’t bias, but based on his expertise in animation, like he’s an animator and knows what to look for in quality animations, so why can’t they acknowledge that? 💀

Cyno and Xiao's bursts have more effects during the combat portion of their bursts. So I'm not sure that's 100% fair assessment of them since you also took into consideration some of Raiden's active combat visuals as well as Dehya's full burst duration which includes her gameplay portion (while she's punching.) Of course, you don't have to consider the entire burst duration, but I'm just saying... I'd put Cyno in high A tier and Xiao in mid B tier when considering instead

Dillon, you should check out the bursts as a whole by effect (from a distance) and do a different tier list. Some of the bursts effects are fantastic, like swirling maples and so on

I have ZERO knowledge about the process of creating animations but I can tell that bro was really strict on grading them LOL. I think some of them could've also included judgement on their normal/charged/plunging attacks (Raiden, Itto, Xiao, Cyno, Hu Tao, etc.) since for Raiden they're technically a part of her burst but I also get that we're just grading it based on the animation. Great video and I also think Yelan has a top tier burst animation (my bias is Hu Tao btw). There's actually already a video of Furina's burst animation and it looked pretty nice. We're just gonna wait for a follow up video once there are more characters added to the game.

Theres a place in old mondstald ruins with a series of ring wind field that connect the centre area to a ramp at the outskirt, when you go from the centre and the moment you hit the ground, you will still slide forward abit, casting the burst at that moment will make it look even more cool for some character.
Having watched your HSR and HI3 animation reviews prior to this video, I think the short burst animations in Genshin contribute a lot to how enjoyable the combat is in Genshin. They are fun but don't take a lot of time or distract from the combat, instead you have this nice short animation and then often you get some really good combat effect. I appreciate how the animations are so concise in Genshin compared to the other 2.
