What I reckon he’s saying is a coach can only do so much and players need to execute also him stating MJ and Hakeem is to show sometimes it doesn’t matter what a coach strategises when you meet anomalies as players who just cannot he stopped and Shaq in his prime can be included in that list.
His way of articulation wasn’t great and he’s so emotional it clouds the reasoning behind his point, because he can be such a big baby sometimes 😑😑

A coach's job is to observe the opponent, refer to the tempo and draw up plays to best counter the opposing team's strengths. I don't blame Shaq for his perspective, either, though. In his day, there was a lot more ISO and post-play prevalence, which take out the responsibility of the coaches and makes it fully dependent on the player's awareness and skill-set. The reason he argues it so vehemently is because Jackson's method to approaching Shaq was to get the ball to him and the moment there was a triple-team or even a double-team, operate with the 4 other players outside. Shaq is just so dominant with the ball in his hands he can't see how Jackson enabled him, and it's arguable that Jackson did little to coach him ... but he definitely did go to work with the bench and the other four players.

    • @Apoc6
      @Apoc6 4 года назад +2

The coaches gives the defensive assignments, substitutions, points out the mistakes during the timeouts, coaches are important, telling players whether they should switch or not against a pick and roll, when to double team, call zone or man defense, Kobe took it upon himself to go against Byron Scott’s call for Lin on when to foul, which may have costed them the game.
Some players know exactly what to do, that is why a coach can fold him arms and sit back and watch until they see mistakes being made.
The only tarnish on Jordan’s impeccable six ring run is Phil calling for the switch on Allen Iverson, although the Bulls still won. A double team may have been more effective on that play.
When Raekwon made the analogy of RZA being a bad head coach and RZA said that it is the players that need to show up, the coach can only observe and guide you in the right direction.

The main issue here is Kenny's rule: If the team lose by 7 points or less, it is the FAULT of the Coach; If they lose by 7 points or more, it is the FAULT of the players. - THAT is the one that Shaq wants to dispute. For him, losing should all goes down to the players; It's all about the EFFORT.

Coaching has a major impact on a player's careers and in a team's success. Imagine sports without coaching, it would be unstructed and no one would watch and it would be less enjoyable for those watching and playing. Coaches also serve as great leaders off the court too. They can be a role model or be a support for their players. I've read Jay Williams book called Life is not a Accident and he praises Coach K, both as a coach and as a role model off the court. He says their bond helped him get through his lowest points in life and in basketball. In Kobe Bryant's book The Mamba Mentality, he addresses several coaches and how the impacted his career as well. Coaching matters, and it crucial to success, both on an individual and team level.

the way i see it is Phil Jackson didn't have to do any coaching in game when things got tough because he wanted the players to figure it out on their own as part of his coaching. and that's only because he had done his coaching before the game even begins during practice, training camp, etc. preparing the players with what they need to do.

Coaching matters at the grammar school, high school, and at the college level. Once guys make it to the NBA, coaching isn't as important. Why? On offense, everyone runs the same plays. Everyone runs screen/roll, pick and pop, or some version of a post play. Then, you have isolation, which isn't even a play, it is just give the guy the ball and let him do his thing. On defense, everything is either man to man or zone, and on screen/roll, the big guy must "show". The guy getting screened must go under the screen if his opponent can't shoot, or go over the screen if his opponent can shoot. That's all there is to it in NBA coaching. As you see, it's really not a lot.

Shaq would be dominate in any era so I don’t think it’s that. I just think he’s one of those guys who doesn’t like to lose arguments so they talk over good points

He is a bit annoying sometimes. Trying to discredit coaching altogether to make his career look even better. Great players need great coaches just as much as great coaches need great players.

Shaq is right. Its more about player talent and circumstances. Lets talk football for a second. Nick Saban looks like a great coach because Alabama recruits the best talent every year. If Saban coached for a no name school he would be irrelevant.

0:16 Kenny and Chuck were just about to argue with each other, then Shaq has to be all loud and wrong and unite them against him. You can even see them think "Did he just say what I think he said?"

  • @omygunny4978

Shaq has a point to yes coaching is important but coaching won't get you a ring. At the end of the day it's the players that play. You think Ty Lue would have a ring without LBJ? You think Kerr would have won a championship or make playoffs without 4 allstars. Greg Pop is probably the only exception but even then when was the last time coach Pop won without an Allstar/allstars Pop's coaching will get you to the playoffs without allstars but not a ring.

Shaq is thinking about X's and O's. But even if you listen to his own views, and Jordan views and other great players that had Hall of Fame coaches, they all say that same thing. Coaching is about two things getting all your players to buy into the system starting with your stars and managing ego's.

I think Shaq perspective on coaching is the off-the-game routines that take place. The training camps, the drills, the footage tapes, etc... That stuff because come game time, its about putting on the plays that you have practiced over and over again. The coach thats on the bench just decides whats the optimum play at the time, which is not on every possession. You could say he is half right, but you can't say he isn't fulling wrong. What the others are most likely pointing out is the impact of a full immersion of coaching, the motivating, the directional route that coaches try to put you on to reach our potential. The difference is Shaq despite being one the most dominating players, still had a bit more in him if he wanted to reach his potential and despite that he has more rings than everyone on that panel, so its hard to argue with a guy, the dominated and conquered based on 'effort' and talent.

Am I the only one that kinda agrees with Shaq? I think it's mostly down to the players in closing games. I think the overall record of teams will be reflection of a coaching staff.

  • @moonpiespotlight4759

Shaq isn't saying coaching doesn't matter. He's saying the difference between winning during the game isn't what the coach is doing. He can be wrong, some coaches run plays out of timeouts.
