  • Vania Markarian & Julio Cabrio "Clemente Padín en el Archivo General de la Universidad de la República" (Clemente Padín at the Archivo General de la Universidad de la República)
In this lecture, Vania Markarian and Julio Cabrio speak about the work by Uruguayan artist Clemente Padín, a poet and artist, and one of the representative figures of mail art and visual poetry in Latin America. They give a general introduction to the archives of the artist, currently under custody at the Archivo General de la Universidad de la República (AGU-UdelaR) in Montevideo, and point out the importance of his artistic endeavours. Padín was the main figure behind the magazines "Los Huevos del Plata", "OVUM 10" and "OVUM", which were key outlets for several young artists (writers, poets, musicians, among others) in the 1960s and 1970s, and became instrumental in the articulation of generational concerns, which in turn informed the student movement 1968 in Montevideo. In addition, he was a pioneer of performance and mail art in Uruguay, and started to collect mail art by artists from all over the world. His artistic practice exposed the advancement of authoritarianism and repression in the region in the 1970s, which resulted in his imprisonment from 1977 to 1979. Clemente Padín's work also shows the characteristics of mail art in Latin America that differs from that of the United States and Europe.
