I was 17 in 1994…in my full grunge stage. I remember walking into the house and my mom telling me about Kurt being gone. The sadness and anger of my idol being gone, was almost unbearable. 29 years later, I still can’t believe it but, knowing Kurt’s mind better now as opposed to when I was that 17 year old kid, I’ve come to a sort of peace with his passing. What a time. We witnessed the beginning and end of grunge in my opinion. When I see a youngster walking around with a Nirvana shirt on today, I wonder if they really understand what they are wearing or, if it’s just become a fashion statement. I miss Kurt and his music but, I miss how real and sarcastic his personality was probably more. He’d never want anyone to say this but, RIP LEGEND….you changed the world for a time. 🤘

I was also 17 in 1994. But to this day, I don't think my mother has ever heard of grunge! 😂
As for kids wearing Nirvana T-shirts? I think a select few of them probably know and like their music (even if it will never be the same experience for them)
but mostly, I suspect a lot of them are wearing them for the same reason they might wear a Jimi Hendrix or Pink Floyd shirt: it looks cool...

I was 20 in '94, had just flown into NYC from the UK, huge Nirvana fan, saw them live at Reading in' 92 or '93. Couple of days after we arrived in the US his death was announced.
Two weeks later we were in Seattle and standing in that very park, back then there was no gate and you could see Kurt's grey Volvo parked on the drive. Peeped over that fence at the back and could see into the loft where he killed himself.
A dark, but, special memory and pilgrimage to someone who's music I still love.

The crazy part of the story to me is Kurt sat next to Duff from GNR on the plane back to Seattle right before he killed himself. Him and Duff talk the plane ride back when they landed Kurt and Duff's friend went outside to have a smoke. When Duffs friend got back inside after the smoke Duff said to him Kurt seemed pretty down and that they should invite him to hang out at Duffs place. Right at that moment Kurt's taxi came and picked him up and he was gone. I always if there was a chance Kurt would have changed course if his car never came that fast.

I remember where I was when I heard Kurt had died. I love his music more than any other band/artist, both before he died and after. I never considered him a “voice” for me but I felt connected to his songs. Like him I felt/feel unwanted by my dad. I’m the youngest of 3 kids, my brother was the smart one, my sister was the pretty one and I was the weird, ugly one.
I’ve battled with depression since my first suicide attempt when I was 11. Hearing this incredible (and good looking) artist say he felt ugly and stupid made me feel less like a freak and that might not be as pointless as I usually felt.
I’ve been on anti-depressants for decades and am doing better. I still fight depression (more so lately) but am not suicidal. Kurt probably never knew how deeply his death would affect his family, friends and fans. I’m just a regular person, but I know my family loves me and this gives me hope. I look for joy and beauty in the little things which also helps.
At times I can’t list to Nirvana because he killed himself. But in the good times I still love his music.
Sorry for the long post. By the way Michael you made me burst out laughing when you mentioned the nude beach.
You may want to consider doing a piece on Layne Staley from Alice In Chains, he is another great artist gone too soon.

In 1994 I was 14 years old and still grieving the deaths of 3 loved ones by suicide the preceding years. I was so upset by his death but couldn't cry. My heart hardened for years after that; struggling to let people get too close for fear of losing them.
Our pain is temporary, our lives have more meaning than we sometimes know. If you are struggling, talk to someone. Don't believe what your mind is telling you. Take one day at a time. You are worthy and you are loved.

When I lived in Federal Way from August 1997-June 2000, I begin to experience and see the Devastating Epidemic of Suicide in King County,WA. It just Surreal how ORDINARY it seemed up there. Our Home Church's Pastors Son had Committed Suicide in 1993, and it was STILL Difficult even in 1998 for Members to discuss it, since the kid was only 14 years old. I remember watching a KOMO 4 News Report on Teen Depression in '98 and it talked about a 13 year old Kid living in Burien who had been bullied and teased for having "Boy Tits". He was so overwhelmed, that he took his Father's Belt and Hung himself. The Article showed the SAME Bullies at his Wake with blank Expressions and Absolute REMORSE, and when his Mother went up to his Coffin and broke down, one of his Bullies ran up to her Weeping "I'm So Sorry! I'm Sorry! I'm Sorry! I'm Sorry".
To the Conspiracy "Kurt was Murdered" Tom Grant Disciples: STOP Disrespecting and Making light of Suicide in Seattle. Its NOT funny.

You guys were in my city, yay! Here in Seattle, we don't believe for a second that Kurt killed himself. The evidence is overwhelming that it was physically impossible with the amount of heroin in his system. There is no way he could have physically shot a gun. Not to mention the entire police case was completely blotched up, the fact that her own father is on film saying he believes Courtney had it done, and last, but certainly not least, the fact that a man is on film who stated he was offered 50k by Courtney to kill Kurt, 3 days after his interview came out, he was found dead on a train track under suspicious conditions. We will never believe Kurt took his own life, he lived for his daughter. He had stated to Courtney he wanted a divorce, and Courtny had written in a diary that she will eliminate anyone that stood in her way of wealth. She did not want to lose part of his fortune. Love you guys! Hope you enjoyed your visit to the Emerald City!!

He was an extreme addict and if the number that is quoted was representative of total morphine, that is not totally uncommon for an addict of his nature. He was a regular user who would've had a high count of total morphine in his body.

I’m old enough to have endured hair metal in college (hated it then, sort of nostalgic now… not really), but Nirvana was the beginning of a renaissance of solid alternative rock music in the early ‘90s. From Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, STP, NIN, etc., they were among my favorites. After Kurt died, that music went with him. Crazy how more rockers from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s have outlived more of the ‘90s grunge singers.

I felt cursed. I realize now AIC had been putting out amazing music even before Nir but somehow I also didnt "get" them until it was too late for Layne.

At the time Courtney was in rehab. Generally, when people are in rehab they're not allowed outside communication. Given this was the early 90's there were no cell phones like we have today. Unless she had access to a landline she would have no idea what was going on unless someone told her. Given the likelihood of Kurt causing her to relapse it's even more reason for the doctors to keep her from contacting him.

    • @Tornado1994

@@ZiddersRooFurry This. I was around in '93-94 and the most important way to contact someone at the time was a Pager. Mobile Tech was over a Decade away, Cellphones were Expensive and fairly Primitive , the Public Internet was still over a year away, and GPS didn't really exist, Yet. Courtney, Toddler Frances and their Nanny were ALL in Rehab in L.A. at the time, and Cobain had been sent to a Complete Separate Rehab in San Fernando. Thus Neither were allowed to contact each other. Its possibly one of the reasons why he Fled after only one Day on March 29,1994. He DID attempt to contact her on March 30th, but was so Loaded, he forgot the code word when calling her Room.
