Please use responsibly. UPDATE - some are saying that you don’t have to do the battery door trick, just change the date and pull the battery out. 🤷♂️ UPDATE 2 - It works. just change the date and pull the battery without powering down, this will reset the timer any time, even if you haven't overheated yet. Stupid simple workaround.
So you’re saying that we could just keep resetting the camera and continue on shooting? And then the camera will shutdown before the sensor gets damaged? I’m not trying to hold you to this 🤣 It would be good if someone tried it out to see. I’m not willing to risk my camera, haha
@VisionRouge
His summarized hack....step by step:-
1. Power the camera with a external battery and close the door beside the R5 (you can also do the screw trick if you like)
2. Record video until you see the overheating logo, or even until the camera shut down.
3. Turn OFF the camera by using the power button so your recording parameters (ISO and so one) are saved.
4. Turn back the power ON.
5. Go to the menu, Change the time of the day to +3 hours at least (or add a day).
6. Drop the power by disconnecting the external battery.
7. Wait 30 seconds or even less.
8. Put back the external battery. The overheat issue should be gone. (if not, you may actually be in real overheat situation), try in 10mn…
Extra step to put back the time: You can do this after step 8. This have been confirmed working by dellfonic from MagicLantern forum.
9. Turn OFF the camera using power button. [this is the extra step]
10. At this time, the “overheat flag” is now written into memory.
11. Turn back on the power with the power button. The camera is now booting from a regular boot.
YOU ROCKZ!
"From what I'm told," - WHO told you? Absolutely NOT anyone from Canon. Your camera will be DEFECTIVE in time.
U R NOT ME sure bro 👌🏼
Nice tip. I agree its good to use in a pinch. I just would like to see Canon implement an overheat warning based on actual overheating... Looks like amateur hour.
I bought my R5 yesterday. After playing with it for about 20 hours and having a blast. I noticed that the firmware wasn't updated. So I decided to do a quick update. Thank you so much for the upload not only did you save me from going batshit crazy by going through my menu over and over and over again. But you also showed me a neat trick for that I'm going to subscribe and give you a thumbs up.
good to hear. Use Clog 3 and ISO 800 as a base for maximum DR.
@BenThereBenThat yes so far it does.
You just made my life 1000x less stressful. Thank you so much!
Tested and confirmed. Thanks for sharing!
Hey does this hack work still
Man thx to everyone who saved my investment after the misleading canon ad that showed the camera on a professional video set!
That's the problem of being an early adopter. I did this only once and it didn't go well (also Canon). Now before I buy some new gear, I wait at least three months after it is released to the market and real world reviews come in.
Thanks for sharing my finding!

thanks for being so smart!
You are a legend man!
Thanks for this! Just tested it out and was able to successfully record two 17 min clips of 8k back to back, and started recording again right after. The only issue I ran into was that if I tried to start recording right away after plugging the battery back in, it would say "movie stopped recording". I'm wondering if that's due to the card though, and not the camera. The camera was definitely physically warm though!
34 mins of 8k what more can one want
I am going to test this with my R6 1.0.0 today. Thanks for video!
Hey matt! Love your videos your really incredible. Will you ever show us how you color grading?
Canon is gonna try and patch that up lol this is so stupid of Canon for doing this. Loses a ton of credibility by intentionally handicapping the R5 and masking it as "overheat protection". Shame. Shame.
Or they don't put in that protection, one or two folks get their 3.5k$ camera frying on set from overheating. Lawsuits flies in from left and right.
KhoPhi thats what they want you to believe. Till now all electronics survived with internal heat measurement I don't see why this camera should be a unicorn.
If they implement a proper overheating system, we'd all be happy.
KhoPhi $4k camera ;)
Do you mind if I grab a clip for my news piece. I'd rather just give youth credit and use a few clips from your vid.
sure no problem.
@@thefilmpoets Thank you.
Super easy hacked but confused whether the Sensor may not hampered in this way!
I think Canon will fix this hack with firmware, but to get everyone to update, they'll need to put some great stuff in that firmware to convince us to update. Maybe both C-log 2 and 3 and RAW light or something.
Darwin Macon exactly.
Wow ❤️ quick and easy . Thanks
Majos Dániel easy? It’d be easier if it didn’t overheat. What a joke.
Quick question. Did you sell your Gh5s for the R5? Is the heat issue worth going back to the 1dx mk3? If you shot a wedding with the R5 I am assuming you have to do this hack every 30 minutes
I shot a wedding with the R5 and had no overheating. I just used some 4kHQ in bursts, and then regular 4k for longer stuff. Then some 4k60p whenever I wanted. No problems, but it's good to know that this is there if it overheats and I just have to have some more 60p. - I just like the size and flip screen so much more than the 1dxIII, although they are both gorgeous.
Nice tip Matt!
Hey you need to add this hack to your review the 8k back to back 34mins of 8k
The JOKE is we shouldn't even have to do this. But ty for the fix
The joke is that people believe in these hacks. Did you see lensRental's teardown of the R5? There is no fucking place for the heat to go in that crammed body. Unlike cine cameras that are larger and have fans. The heat is fucking real! LOL!
@@iwaswithyourmom9410 The aluminium heatsinks take the heat away from memory chips and area around the CPU and channel it to the screws in the body. The heat is also expelled from the body itself.
Do sustained high temps above 60C damage the internals (voltage regulators) etc? I would have thought Canon would have protection mechanisms in place to stop any damage. Time will tell.
Well, that's amazing, and *relatively painless* - thanks for the tip! Getting beyond the overheating issues, how are you enjoying the R5? Do you find you're going to this over the 1DXiii at this point, or do you go back and forth?
I love the R5. After using it, the 1D bodies feel massive in comparison. The 1dxIII image is sharper in the 60p modes, but everything else goes to the R5, and I actually haven't had overheating issues on a real shoot yet. -Matt
@@thefilmpoets That's my feeling too... I was coming over from the EOS R. I've just loved the R5 for both motion and stills. It's hard to put my finger on *why* it feels so much nicer, but I'm digging it. Looking forward to getting my hands on more RF glass, but for now, the EF adapter w/ND has been pretty great.
@@JoshMiles Yea I REALLY like the adapters. I'm rocking the one with the polarizer right now. So simple, but also it's the best pola I've ever used. No color shift.
@@thefilmpoets so the 60p mode is sharper on 1dx iii is the last thing I want to hear...what a shame....and how is 4k 120 is that softer than 60 on r5
I'm wondering who's gonna roast his R5 first? 😂
Me with nice peri peri
Assuming this is the same thing for the r6?
Ricky Meyer Films yep!
Thanks 😉
Hey almost a year down the road do you think using this hack regularly reduces camera life span also. Do you have any idea if this still works on version 1.50 firmware?
yea I need to use it occasionally. Works fine, dont even need to use a tool to hold the battery door open. just pull the battery after changing the date.
Glad I'm gonna be using the Sony A7s III in a couple weeks!
Does this work for the 8k and 4k 120 too?
yes, although 4k 120p is the mode that causes the most heat. I'd be carful not to keep pushing that one. I actually used 4k 120 the first time I tested it.
@@thefilmpoets sorry to ask again, but how many times in a row did you try with the 4k 120 :)
@@QippysChannel I didn't do much, but someone on the forums did. From EOSHD - "But this is interesting: There is another overheat symbol appearing after 15 minutes into my seconf 120fps run: one without the camera, a thermomter only. After stopping and taking out the card (leaving in the SD card) the symbol turns white. It disapears after taking out the (very hot) CFExpress card. So it seems to be an overheat warning for the CFExpress card."
The Film Poets oh ok , thnks so much for the explanation, i can see it definitely useful if we really need some shots when we really need to 👍😊
I so want to get the R5 .. if this works well or there is another solution I'm getting one.. btw your image here looks really good .
was this filmed in 8K ? what lens did you use on this shoot ? great video !
4k HQ with the 35mm and 85mm primes
@@thefilmpoets interesting... I watched it on my lg monitor 29" and it looked great, when I watched it on my LG OLED tv it didn't look as great as the 8k images from the R5 ...
I guess you could say who's gonna be watching your content on a big 4k OLED tv when most content is consumed on a small laptop or phone. all the videos I've seen in 4kHQ don't see that great or as impressive as 8k on a 4k tv. ... if I hadn't seen the r5 8k then I would have said 4khQ was nice ... so for me personally I hope this hack works well with the 8k .. I thin my problem is I've been shooting 4k for 4 years now , and would love to get away from that digital look most cameras have .. the red is a bit expensive for me .. just trying to find that perfect camera ( for me) .. I think id be happy with R5 8K ..hope the overheating hack fixes it .. maybe canon will update it so this hack can't be used .. wouldn't surprise me
cheers from UK
@@hirosixproductions youtube 4k is compressing more than youtube 8k
@@LarsSteenhoff yup. the thing is all my content is consumed on RUclips , so its how it looks on youtube that matters even if it looks fantastic played from the file, it will never been seen like that ... thats my problem.
on a personal level :-)
Hiro Six Productions Did you ever try upsampling the 4k to 8k before uploading to youtube? It may be better in the end
Has anyone tested this with the R6?
I have. Works great! I also did a video of it. :)
Does it work with R6?
can you do that again and again ? won't the camera really overheat at some point ? (without maybe telling you so)
I'll clarify up in a pinned post.
@@thefilmpoets amazing thanks!
Oh you are shooting with Ronin RS2 :D
no comment =)
The Film Poets you’re getting a subscription from meeee, I can’t wait for the new gimbal!
It’s SUPER SECRET!
You're now shooting on the wrong date. Can you switch the date back again before you start shooting again?
Yes you can. Go the the link in the description and scroll all the way down. They do teach and explain.
Hey Matt, has the R5 overheated on you while on a paid gig yet? Did knowing it could overheat constrict your normal shooting style? Thanks.
No overheats on a paid shoot yet. I just had to stay at regular 4k, which doesn't overheat, a lot, and then I shot 60p and remembered to turn the camera off in between shots since it was connected to an external monitor on my ronin-s. It all worked well. I'll keep testing though.
The Film Poets has this been prior to the firmware update? Additionally 4k 120 or what are you using for slo-mo?
@@felipemvera it works with all firmware, even 1.1.1 - and no need to even do the battery door trick. I use 4k 60p mostly and 120p for super fast action that I want to slow.
Thanks for the tips, it's clearly very useful, but good gods Canon - what are you guys doing over there. This is just embarrassing.
How did you connect the Peak Design Clip to the Manfrotto plate? :D
Stefan Gatzke leave a little space at the back for the loop to push through
@@thefilmpoets thanks! My loop seems to be to short to make this...
Stefan Gatzke it was tight. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get it off.
Tried it on an R6 and it Doesnt work 🤦🏽♂️
Just purchased mine with adaptor same price as a7s iii
Damn!
This overheating imo is nothing more than a deliberate cripple. We voted with our wallet and returned the R5 and accessories. I’m waiting for my preordered Sony A7S3.
If you really love Canon, press for recall.
No need, it could be fixed with a firmware update
@@LarsSteenhoff not be sure.
If They would have already made it a a available.
I think it's major hardware failure.
The longer they delay accepting it, the more damage they cause to the company.
@@S.T.VisualStories they have a c300 mkiii and a host of camera coming out they have to protect them and industry
That is a rather annoying way to get round it (all be it that it works), as I like to have my images/videos properly timestamped.
so you can still do that. Just reset the time once you power back up.
@@thefilmpoets Ah, I assumed from the video that once you had changed the date you had to stick with that until the next time it 'overheated'.
Ufff. These "outdated" R5s will sell for a premium because you can bet Canon will ship the new ones with a newer firmware that "fixes" this.
lol, no they won't
I hadn't thought of that.
That was card problem change another new v90 card issue solved
Dude I can’t believe this... Canon seriously needs to remove that cripple hammer. After owning this camera for three weeks 4K for a camera that overheats is no worth it. I really hope they fix it.
return it
It's not a video camera
@@maxmaxmaxgoon5602 after the update and using it more I’m so impressed with this camera. I’ve done 7-8 hour shoots on 60 with out any overheating. Same goes for 24 HQ.
Just bought one same price as a7s iii with adaptor
How many more profess we need to finally force canon to remove fake overheating issue this is another evidence that this isn’t based on temperature even with new firmware update it is still timer 😡
LOL all that money spent for that
It's absolutely humiliating that Canon crippled this camera in such a ridiculous way. Canon sheep, don't complain about this then go out and buy the camera. If you want changes, vote with your wallet.
Stupid that you have to do that at all.
What a scam, and these huge companies get away with it.
Ohhhhhhh, why spent 4000$ for this....why?
Coz this camera is really cheap compared to it's spec
wwwwwwwwwwwttttttthhhhhhh
canon is a POS for doing this.
Lol wth is that
After spending so much money for this camera you have to do that?
That's lame
I actually didn't have to do it. I've done two shoots with the r5 and it didn't overheat at all, but I've made it overheat in tests. The newest firmware makes it much harder to overheat if you'r shooting in bursts. This is just something that can be done if it happens.
What a POS camera.
Haha. It’s the best image I’ve shot with but at the same time it can possibly overheat. Tough to hate on it too much.
@@thefilmpoets Look, I get it. We live in a different day and age. Common sense? Dead, buried, plants grew, died, buried, became coal, mined, in the grill, fire it up, lets BBQ. If I were to tell you the new Corvette goes 0-60 in 2.0 seconds, gets 100MPG, and seats 6 in pharaoh like comfort, but it is only reliable for 90 out of every 100 miles, would you buy it? You could stop the car, crawl underneath, reach into the engine compartment from the bottom, and use a screwdriver to remove and reinstall a screw, and, viola, 90 more reliable miles. It does erase your radio stations, tripometer, seat memory, unsyncs the FOB's, etc. Feel better?
Cannon, innovation
