The only Scottish player to ever win the ballon d'or was a born and bred Aberdonian but alas never played for Aberdeen. I really wish he had. A true legend.
Still holds the record for the most goals in a season (46). My dads all time favourite player, 74 year old man rang me close to tears, he was his Cantona. The original king 👑 RIP the lawman.
My memory of the great guy as a Leeds Utd fan was more personal than you might think. In April 1966, I was 17 years old Man U were playing Partisan Belgrade in the then European cup, having lost the first leg away. The TV program in those days were Scene at 6:0 in the North of England, and they did a short item explaining the implications of what was required for man U to continue in the competition. Whilst the TV anchor man explained the situation of the tie, the cameras were showing different views around the ground. After a short while, the camera settled on a young lady sitting on the steps f the Stretford End eating sandwiches all alone. If you were to say to me, there is your future wife, I would have laughed you down the street so fast, you wouldn't have understood what you've just said. A month later, Leeds were away to Man U on May 19 both teams needing a draw to qualify for Europe. My football hero was of course Bobby Collins who had recovered rom a broken leg and was playing that ight so with friends I went to the match As the teams came out I shouted the Dennis Law was a P*ss head having seen a photograph of him pouring champagne down a pyramid of glasses in the paper, suddenly I felt a brush of something hitting my head from behind and a voice saying "don't you call Dennis Law" I didn't recognize her, but it was the sandwich girl I'd seen a month earlier on TV, her friend resembled in appearance the singer, Lulu. So I showed interest and we chatted. Even though we were standing near to each other we were in different stands, she was on the other side of a fence As the game ending with the expected draw, we gestured goodbye and went our separate ways, or, so I thought. In the time it took me to reach the exit point, she had pushed her war way through the crowd to the exit, leaving her friends and running around the stadium awaiting my exit at the other side of the gate. My friend noticed her and pointed her out to me, leaving me wondering why. As she came up to me, she asked me how was I getting home, I replied a bus into Manchester city Centre and a train to Leeds. She replied "Oh goodie, We're going that way too" As we arrived at the city center on the bus she showed me where she worked, and at 17 was earning more money the both my father and me put together as a solicitors secretary. Well! There and then, that changed the whole concept of how I felt about her, suddenly, her Lulu lookalike friend was of no longer of interest. On May 19 2026, we will have been together 60 wonderful years, being married 59 of them, she's an absolute treasure. But for now she is so emotional of the death of her teenage hero, and what I didn't know, was on that day, May 19, 1966, Erica my wife saw the Man U bus arrive at the stadium, and as she was watching the players leave the bus, a police horse pushed her to the floor, and Dennis Law assisted her recovery by picking her up and making sure that she was okay.
I've read some stories on RUclips but this really got me in the heart you sound like the loveliest couple so glad you found eachother Manchester United fan here and I'm really wish fans could get together this way and put rivalry a side your awesome ❤
@ I'm not a Trible person, other than being from Yorkshire, I ike to see Yorkshire teams doing well. I constantly remind my wife, that when we see Man Utd playing say, in London, The TV anchor makes the claim that the fans have made the effort to travel the 200 miles to be there. I generally remind her that when the Man Utd fans sing, they do so with a London accent.
King of the Stretford End but I was a pre-teen so Dad took me to the Scoreboard End until was taller. I remember Denis Law scoring some fantastic goals. RIP Denis Law.
One of the greatest & most exciting players ever, the runs in to the box at speed, the volleys, the flair & headers. He was one of the most complete strikers ever, in todays game he could have been a great inside forward coming off the wing.

A lot of people consider him better than Best and Charlton. What a player. RIP. 🏴
