The reason the messages weren’t so obvious was because the government was blacklisting anybody that spoke about it even celebrities. BTS and others still donated to the families of the victims though. Sometimes you have to take a risk for what’s right

As a Korean I felt guilty and responsible. I saw a girl in the CCTV of the ferry who went back to her seat after being warned to keep her seat..all parents burst into tears at that point. Can you imagine their graduation ceremony?....Only 75 students were there and some parents of victimes attended wearing the school uniforms of their children. For several years after this tragedy all school trips were abolished..
    Thanks for the sincere reaction.

The Sewol tragedy is one of the ones that shocks me the most, there is even a documentary about it. more than 250 students between the ages of 13 and 16 drowned following the orders of the captain, who fled first, being overweight was the cause of the sinking, the government wanted to hide as much as it could, for reasons of corruption, the coast guard carried out a Terrible work and those who saved the most people were the fishermen who were there. there was a big commotion and many artists who made or tried to make some kind of protest, were put on the government's blacklist, it was something big, but BTS didn't let themselves be silenced and made this beautiful, sad and necessary song, it's clearly about that, but they couldn't explain much more. Today, this tragedy is known and not forgotten, worldwide, because of them. Always wonderful...

    Two things I wanna mention:
    1. The camera shot from inside the whashing machine looking ouside, it almost looks like looking through a porthole from inside a ship.
    2. When Yoongi sits on the pile of clothes it's all dark around him as if he is at the bottom of the ocean. But later when all the members are sitting on the pile of clothes they are in the sky, like all the students came to heaven.

BTS were extremely brave saying a lot without being specific... a lot of artists got blacklisted for even mentioning the involvement of authorities during and after the Sewol tragedy. Parents were standing on the pier begging the coastguard to save even one student...whilst they sent volunteers away and watched the crew being rescued. The Italian explanation video has more information if anyone is interested.... Knowing BTS and the way they have always stood for justice, there was no way they were going to remain completely silent after this happened. Just another reason that I will always support them.

It's important to separate the song and MV! Song is about sadness, longing, grief, missing people who are not in our lives anymore (not necessarily dead).
MV on the other hand has a lot visuals implicating Sewol tragedy.
Our queen is so rooted in the Korean culture, that Spring Day never left melon daily charts since the day it came out (7 years now!).

This explaination barely scratches the surface. Though it is a nice introduction and overview. There's an insane amount of detail in this video. That's why I prefer the Italianarmy one. It also explains more about the tragedy.
It's amazing how powerful this song is. It is our queen. She never left the charts since her release.
The boys went to the families of the tragedy and donated money. That was not done. Korean government really did their best covering up this tragedy. Even though this song came out a while after, the MV is really subtle because it really couldn't be obvious, otherwise there would be repercussions.
This is one of my fav bts songs because of the depth and meaning behind it.

💜🙏Thank you for sharing your heartfelt reaction to Spring Day..... I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 3 years ago..........
"I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?.
Feeling depressed, having su!cidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things.
The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve
    - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident."
I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message.
The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and most of the crew fled the ship in the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink until the night - they left the warning to "not move and stay still" playing on a loop through the ship. Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority.
The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was illegally overloaded.
Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help. And the coastguard did nothing. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...
3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering the truth.... They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye.
3 crew members stayed behind to try and help the children, they all lost their lives, along with one of the rescue divers. Also, one of the civilian rescue divers later committed su!cide after having to recover so many childrens bodies, knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped.
As a parent, I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Horrific that your own government would perpetrate and then cover up such an incident... jailing dissenters for protesting. It was proven that there were high officials with financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people in the public eye (reporters, artists, etc) put on a Govt blacklist for speaking about it.
BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims in 2014 when the tragedy occurred. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know what decent and good people they are.
The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But the song itself is about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They were singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world was longing for a spring day. Spring Day has never left the music charts. To this day, it is right that this song is still in the top 100 charts.... 7 years later, as this song still speaks to people everywhere.
Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day reaction video.... with posting your reaction you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy.
Thank you for sharing your journey, and helping to spread BTS message... Sending greetings and love from Australia.... BORAHAE💜 #WeNeverWalkAlone

A couple things to note - the song Spring Day is about grief and missing friends and loved ones. The music video is specifically a tribute to the victims of the Sewol Tragedy. They originally couldn’t come out and say it because the government was blacklisting artists for speaking up about it (the director of Snowpiercer and the Korean actor in Snowpiercer were both on the blacklist so the Snowpiercer mention has even more meaning there). It was only very recently that Jin was able to confirm that the MV was a tribute to the victims. I definitely recommend checking out the video Rotten Mango put out about the tragedy as it goes super in depth but the explained video by the Italian ARMY also goes in depth and connects more parts of the video to the tragedy. She even went to Korea to speak with the victims family’s before she put the video together so it’s super well researched. Long story short: the reason the government went to such lengths to cover things up is because the ferry sank as a result of illegal modifications that would have been easily caught during a government licensing inspection, yet the shipping company still retained their license. The modifications expanded the cargo hold area, so they were carrying I think ten times the legal weight limit. Then to avoid the ship looking super weighed down once it was underway, they emptied out the holds below deck of water that’s meant to act as a counterbalance. As a result, the ferry was incredibly top heavy, so when the captain tried to steer out of a current, the weight immediately threw the boat on its side and began sinking. The captain, crew and coast guard knew that the more people who survived the shipwreck, the more witnesses would be able to testify against them, so the coast guard rescued the captain and the crew while making zero effort to save any of the passengers. They were all told to stay where they were, as you saw. The only ones that survived were the ones that disobeyed that order and went to the upper deck to figure out what was going on. Even once volunteer rescuers started showing up and the US navy offered to send out a rescue crew they had training nearby, the coast guard impeded rescue efforts and told the navy that they had everything under control. The news reported that all of the students had been rescued while the ship was still sinking and parents showed up at the docks only to witness the boat going down with their kids on it. The worst part is that it took hours and hours and hours for the ship to sink, giving rescuers so much time to get kids out. But they didn’t. Even after the ship had fully capsized, there were still survivors trapped underneath in air pockets. Emergency services even received a call from one of the students trapped in an air pocket begging for help, which they wrote off as a prank. And since many of the students had waterproof phones, there are multiple videos out there of students recording the whole thing, thinking it was no big deal, only to basically record their own deaths. The videos are out there but I don’t think I’ll ever have the strength to watch them. In the midst of all, of this, BTS risked being black listed from the industry by meeting with the families of the victims. They also donated a whole third of their salaries for the year to the victims families to support them. This was before they were making it big even in Korea so they gave even before they had the wealth to do so.

    Thanks for this reaction. :)
As you know, Spring Day is a song about all kinds of loss like old friends, but the music video contains many metaphors of South Korea's Ferry Sewol tragedy.
Let me add a little bit of an explanation of the political situation in Korea during the Ferry Sewol tragedy, the former president of South Korea, Park Geun Hye, was impeached in 2016.
She drove the Ferry Sewol tragedy to political issues and mobilized the media and government organizations to cover up the cause of the tragedy. She and the media drove the bereaved families to people who were crazy about compensation.
And they blacklisted and penalized artists who spoke about Ferry Sewol or criticized the government. (Bong Joon-ho, the director of the films Parasite and Snowpiercer, Song Kang-ho, the male lead actor of the films, and Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Squid Game, are representative people who were blacklisted and oppressed by the Park administration.)
When the Ferry Sewol tragedy happened, MBC News in Korea did not talk about rescuing the victims or the government's fault, and talked about how much compensation the families would receive.
The bereaved families only wanted to find out the cause of the accident and to clarify the reason why the government blocked the rescue of the victims.
Nothing has been revealed about the Ferry Sewol tragedy even now because there are still many subordinates left during the Park administration.
Especially the media, which used to be the puppet of the Park administration, is still alive. And they had attacked the next Korean government.(It was Moon Jae-In government, a government that respected BTS as artists, and also respected autonomy in the Korean culture and arts community.)
Two years ago, there was a presidential election in Korea, after constant attacks, the media finally succeeded in rebuilding the government that was close to dictatorship they wanted. Therefore, Korea has become very confused again.
According to an 2020 interview with a bereaved family of Ferry Sewol, BTS and their CEO, PD Bang, visited them about 200 days after the tragedy, and donated $100,000.
BTS were also very young (most of the victims were the youngest member, Jungkook's age), and Big Hit didn't have much power and the financial situation wasn't good because it was before they gained popularity. Nevertheless, they did this at the risk of being blacklisted.
At that time, because BTS released many songs criticizing Korean society(ex. Am I Wrong?, Silver Spoon, Dope, Spine Breaker, etc...), many ARMYs and even other fandoms were worried that they would be blacklisted.
And... According to the family, one of the victims was ARMY.
The families didn't know who the boys were at the time, but a few years later, when BTS became famous, the bereaved families said they realized that the boys were singers their child loved.

This MV is a commentary on SK and the reason it resonates with everyone is that it's a story that can be told in all our countries. Sadly, this is not a new thing, that the innocent will always be those to suffer and those who are meant to protect the innocent or be there for the interests of the people, aren't. But because of the social commentary and the depth of the meaning to the people of SK, I think it's worth reacting to both Italian Army and Stephanie Soo at Rotten Mango to get the full picture. Yes, it's heavy, so do so only if you want to. It's not just a sad story (sinking of the Sewol), it's so much more and if you love the people of SK this is a must. But this is only my opinion. Not much seems to have improved with the social system since then, but maybe I'm wrong.

As many commented about watching the Italian explanation version of this song, and saying it explains more about this video and song, no it doesn't!
Its their interpretation of the Sewol tragedy and THEY explain more about the tragedy than the song.
Bulletproof Vibes has more links to the book about Omelas, the fairy tale about the girl lighting the match, the train in Snowpercer movie, the clthes pile as art, the shoes hanging in the tree and what it symbolizes. As RM said this is about longing, missing old friends,, its not ONLY for the Sewol tragedy, its why they sang this song in the NPR Tiny Desk concert, missing all their fans during Covid and not being able to perform for them.
Bulletproof Vibes explains more of the Easter eggs found in this MV which BTS and BIGHIT produced.
I prefer this one over the Italian video especially not having to listen to the woman's speaking which became annoying. I preferred the subtitles and you can hear the audio of the song instead.
Since you are on this song, you should watch the Dance practice and the live version from one of their Awards show performances. This choreography is like watching poetry in motion.

I think actually this has most hits because it's short. It's not the best. The Italian AMRY video made on this is the BEST!! You will cry though and hate life. It brings in real events because the person taping it was there. I highly recommend it even though it will scar you. This was downright murder of children and much of it in front of many parents who were held back by police from getting to the boat. The boat took a long time to sink and the coast guard refused volunteers or anyone to come to rescue the kids. It's just awful. Volunteers spent weeks after diving to bring back the bodies of these kids. Some themselves died or even killed themselves because it was such horror. I watched two really good documentaries on this and again highly recommend an in depth look.

I know your content varies away more from BTS right now, but I think checking out Italian Army's explanation video is really worth it despite being longer. It explains more abt the tragedy and the political context behind it, including how it relates to BTS and the families of the tragedy. I think it's important to point out that altough this song was only released in 2017, BTS had visited and donated to families of victims all the way back in 2014 when they were themselves barely surviving financially. This was not disclosed for many years bc of the government and the corruption involved in the tragedy. This song is considered THE QUEEN, and has not left korean charts since it's release.

I agree, if nothing else it will show you how brave BTS and Big Hit were to write record and perform this beautiful tribute song. It's a song that is both heartbreaking and loving at the same time. RM is a legend.

As you move forward with BTS MV's , notice many objects and elements are recurring - laundromats, vehicles like cars, planes or buses, a lone tree, fire, water. All very interesting and meaningful. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

there is a Italian account of this that's much closer to all the truth. ARMY's from other countries told the story the people of Korea were afraid to. This song also represents BTS telling the survivors and families of lost ones that they are not alone in their search for the truth, and to punish those responsible. It was so much worse than this explanation. While I applaud BTS for this stand out, beautiful song, I don't listen to it much as it breaks my heart and ruins my entire day. It's really sickening.

This was a good video to explain the symbolism in the music video. However, I would suggest you watch "What Went Wrong in the South Korean Ferry Disaster" by The New Yorker. It gives much more detail about the disaster.

Children rang their parents from the sinking ship who told them to follow the instructions the crew gave. Howrver the crew did not want panicked passengers preventing them getting off safely. ITALIAN ARMY gives an in depth sequence of events. For instance you learn the coastguard was told to stand down and wait for instruction. Whilst the PM watched the live footage and gave no instruction. The coastguard blockaded the civilian ships that were rescuing children and split the hoses of the civilian divers who wanted to rescue children seen still moving around in airlocks under the water line. I heard one reactor say I wonder who or what was on on that boat they wanted to disappear.

It is right that director Bong Joon-ho, who made the parasite movie, made the movie Seol Guk Yeolja and Chris Evans starred in it. Those children in the accident are the same age as Jungkook.

BTS also never confirmed bc song was made about missing someone - simply, but MV was full of connection to tragedy, all this little things were little hints, and show their support. So MV is totally about it but in a way that isn't in a face.
Yes MV was a "later" but it was time when finally in cort things started to end, so there was reason for release MV then hmm ...
I general video by Italian Army has explanation more focused on what happened.

It will soon be the 10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster. At the time of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, President Park was the daughter of a president who had been dictatorial decades earlier and was supported by conservative forces. The generation that experienced rapid social development during the dictatorship and after the Korean War amid the sacrifices of many working class people. She missed President Park Chung-hee and believed that her daughter would do well, but after Park Geun-hye became president, she only cared about herself and did not care about the people and victims. At that time, celebrities who mentioned the Sewol Ferry were blacklisted and suffered disadvantages. BTS, who donated money to the bereaved families and made a music video for Spring Day, was also targeted.
As a result of the disaster at that time, many Koreans suffered from depression and trauma for a long time. But they couldn't stay still because they were sad or angry. I took to the streets with my family for several cold winter months, raising my voice and shouting to reveal the truth about the tragedy. At the time, the president was not interested in saving the people from disaster. She used this politically, discussing and deciding national affairs with women with whom she was close, and she was only interested in pursuing personal interests. Critics of the regime were blacklisted and treated unequally. BTS was hated by the government at the time for comforting and donating to the families of the victims of the disaster. Afterwards, angry citizens held candlelight protests for months, and even during that cold winter, millions of citizens peacefully protested and impeached the president. I hope this never happens again anywhere else.
Since then, the administration has changed for the second time, and the current administration is also politicians who followed the president who was impeached at the time. They did not reflect on anything after the disaster and have not even learned anything. Another tragedy called the Itaewon disaster plunged the people into sorrow, but even that They used it as a tool of political struggle and only used it for political purposes. The disaster could have been prevented even if they had not ignored the numerous signs warning of danger.
Ironically, those who blacklisted BTS tried to use BTS' global influence politically. Even just before BTS enlisted, they visited their agency and pressured BTS's parents to give a free concert to promote the Busan Expo. As a result, the members began enlisting later than scheduled after the concert.
