My great grandfather Tom Duffin was a member of the charterhouse crew, my mother always told me about the the night they saved the crew of the Hermina, seeing this really brings it home, brave men one and all. Thanks for posting.
So glad you have enjoyed this. Films like this shouldn't be lost in a box. They should be out there for all to see, especialy the decendants of those featured on the film. Cheers.
Love this footage as my Great Grandfather Thomas Duffin is one of the boat crew receiving his medal from the then Prince of Wales. Thomas Duffin volunteered that night in Fishguard while his own ship the St. Andrew, operated by GWR, was tied up on the ferry berth. I can only imagine the balls those men had to row an open boat out to the Dutch sailors in distress in foul weather. Funny how my brother is the spit out of Tom Duffin's mouth and how I chose a life at sea, sailing with Stena Line and the same route and rank (AB/Quarter Master) as our Great Grandfather. Thank you Hicklingstandard for this golden moment in the Duffin family history. I was also great-full to come into Toms Seaman's Discharge and Union Subs book. This film tops it off. Thanks again. Gareth Duffin, Wexford Town.
Tom Duffin was my great-grandfather too, and the first I heard of this was a couple of weeks ago. Don't suppose you could confirm my suspicion that he was the one in the back row, third from left in the line up outside the building could you moc130? That fellow seriously has the look of my Uncle Tom Duffin. Lovely to find out something so awe-inspiring about your ancestor. Thanks for posting this Hicklingstandard.
