lol I have the same color and the exact same thing just happened to my car on the drivers side. I pulled off the door today and was like you couldnt find a thing, i can only lower my window about 2 inches and it starts kicking backwards. I also noticed my stoppers on the upper part of the door were in the bottom of the inner door panel crumbled apart but I found that same white plastic broken piece and still dont know what that goes to. Thank you for this video I know two things to go directly to and check tomorrow. I really appreciate it man.

My 1999 Miata with tan interior had exactly the same problem with the passenger side window stopping a couple inches down. Found exactly the same cause; plastic cable positioning clip popped loose, allowing cable to snag the window on its way down.
I fixed mine by drilling two small holes either side of the cable close to the loose clip. I threaded stainless steel safety wire in one hole, around the cable out the other hole, then twisted the ends together using pliers.
I like the zip-tie idea mentioned in other comments. However, mine was repaired, working, and back together before I scrolled down to read them.
albumartist is absolutely right about that black sticky goo getting everywhere! I strongly advise wearing disposable gloves and clothes you don't mind getting stains on. Pay attention to which parts have to go back on before the plastic vapor barrier, because you don't want to deal with that goo more than once!
About the same time as the problem covered in this video, my other power window suddenly quit altogether. Quickly isolated the problem to the a tiny broken bit of plastic in the window control switch in the center console. That too was an easy fix. I replaced the switch assembly with a *brand new one* found on eBay. I don't recommend getting a used switch assembly, because the plastic would be just as old and weak is the failed one.
So, a big thank you to albumartist!

Thank you for this video. I know it’s old, but it told me two things. This is a common problem on these cars and that I could fix it. My problem was exactly like yours. Wire was binding the window. A push of the bracket back in the door and a little duct tape and it’s working again. I wish you would have shown putting that plastic with the goop back on. I did my best but it was messy. I also had to drill out the door handle screw. It was completely stripped. Although my bushing like yours is in bad shape, the window worked fine without it. I did not want to also remove the glass. I guess that is a project for another day. I’m just glad to have a working window again.

Good video for disassembly door panel. If the window stops several inches down, the problem is the cable catching the window. Replace the broken clamp with a tie wrap no need to pull the glass.

My drivers side window has been doing this for almost two years now on my 2001 Miata, Some piece broke off and fell out, I just keep going up and down with the window holding it and it eventually goes all the way down, but it is a pain in the behind, I thought I needed a whole new motor and regulator, Great fix! Now I can finally fix mine... Thanks for posting

I bought a used 1999 Miata. The passenger side started locking up like in the video (Causing me to get a nice discount on the spot) but I thought using Zip-Ties would be a better idea. I also lubed up the roller wheels on the windows which seemed to help on top of the zip-ties. I used silicon lube for those and I think the window fix will last longer if you maintain those rollers (I'm 99% sure that's why those clips broke in the first place.)
-I also realize this is late :P nice video though! Helped me out!

Thanks for the video. I did not have to do much to fix it The cord just up and behind the door latch I had to use tie down straps to keep it from getting pulled down by the window, tried the window and it works great

Thanks for the tutorial, it was very useful for disassemling the door panel. Luckilly I only had to add grease and my windows are going up and down like new now.

moss miata . com and i think Rev9 .com sells TEFLON bushings , replace them once & you should never have to replace them again . Also a company out of Japan , that has a U.S. distributer . Sells a a high torque , very fast replacement Window regulator for all miatas . And I always use WATERPROFf lithium grease on the tracks . Do it right the first time ! And forget about it ! Good luck !
