I was born in Washington DC in a home for unwed mothers (I was put up for adoption upon birth), but I’ve never seen Washington DC. I was adopted and raised in North Carolina, but it says I was born in Washington DC on my birth certificate and is where my birth certificate is filed.
You should go if you can. I lived there for a long time and loved it. I never really cared about politics just the history and culture of the city. Lived there for over a decade and still wish I could afford to live there again. So much to do and see.

I usually try to visit my Dad's grave & the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington the week before Memorial Day weekend (weekdays it's impossible to find parking) since they close the bridge to Arlington Cemetery a day or 2 before the President visits. I'm taking binoculars next time I go to find Darth Vader👀
There is a subway (Metro) stop at Arlington Cemetery. Hop on that and get off at Smithsonian if you want to see anything on the Mall or go to Union Station Metro stop and you will be very close to the Capital on North Capital Street.
I grew up in D.C. before my dad got transferred to texas in '81. 😕 It was awesome to take field trips there as well as to Mount Vernon, Manassas and various other civil war sites. I got to participate in the '76 Bicentennial Expo and walk down the steps of the Washington Monument. Very cool! Folks who have never been have no idea how awesome the Smithsonian is. 👍

Also the reason "no taxation without representation" is a real thing is because DC residents don't have a voting member of congress. They can vote for POTUS but they have 1 representative in the House and that representative can't vote on any bills so effectively they don't have representation like the rest of the country does in congress.

The 23A gave them the ability to vote for President and electoral votes, but that’s it. DC has a Congressional Delegate, but the Delegate can only vote in committee and can’t vote on House legislation that goes to a House vote. DC residents lack any representation in the Senate.
