- This documentary film by the National Civic Art Society tells the story of how Washington, D.C. became an iconic classical city.
Beginning with the Founding Fathers' classical vision for the nation's capital, the film delves into the history of the city's design, including the L'Enfant Plan, the construction of the U.S. Capitol, and the 1901 McMillan Plan that created the magnificent National Mall and Monumental Core as we know them. Unfortunately, after World War II, the aesthetic integrity of the city was damaged as the federal government constructed Brutalist and other ugly Modernist buildings.

The National Cathedral is major landmark that seems like it gets overlooked. The Basilica of the National Shrine is another major landmark that is very overlooked and very underrated. They both stand tall and rise over the U S Capitol. They are like another Lincoln & Jefferson Memorial.
This was very well done but I gotta say... The thing I love about cities is the layers. How you can look around and see each period of time. I like the brutalist and modernist buildings in DC. But I also love the Classical buildings. You keep saying "compromised" but many of the examples you state are just examples of moving forward. Everything is not so black and white.
"In sight, form, and elegance, must look BEYOND the present day", George Washington. To promote looking to Roman, Greek, and Neoclassicism architecture is to look back, not forward or BEYOND our day. America was just learning what America was in the late 1700's and we were heavily influenced by Europe in literature, art, and architecture. We must continue our search for our form and our elegance within the context of L'Efant's vision and not be tied by such limited vision. Our true vision for America, design and architecture is not about style, but about character.
too bad that the south eastern (SE) part of DC is so unsafe due to street crime. Just several yards away from the white house you can be mugged at daylight. So much for self celebration and grandeur. I liked the critical view of this documentary and the recognition of the threat to city esthetics from economic forces.
The White House is in NW DC. Over a mile from the closest part of SW DC (the Capitol Dome) and several miles from the part of the city across the Anacostia that I'm guessing you're referring to.

Can you put out a version where a black woman narrates? I'm not sure how this organization can achieve its goals in cities without recruiting the key players.
