Mark doesn't interview the addict, he interviews a person who is and addict and listens to their story, he doesn't interview a homeless person, he interviews a person who just happens to be homeless and lets them tell their story. His has introduced me to so many different people who have taught me what it's like to have the issues and lives that I've heard of and seen but never thought about them being just people, just like me who are in a situation I could never really perceive it would be to live like that.
it's genuinely such a valuable youtube channel. I'd never realized how bad my addiction and issues were and was and how similar and almost exact my childhood was to these people and it just inspired me to get sober along with the fact I almost oded and had a heart attack 2 days ago. Thank you so much Mark, you just saved me and I think now I finally may have these opportunities, I'm going to get help before it's too late.
Mark has more empathy in his little toe than most of us feel our entire lives. God Bless him and ease his pain. 🙏

I had rough things happen in my life which has led to personnel failures and mistakes. And then I look at the hand these people were dealt and damn they wouldn't even be alive today if they failed or made a mistake in their situation.

I had no idea RUclips was stealing millions of dollars from you. They profit off your hard work, it's disgusting you aren't monetized. I'm really grateful for your passion project, it means a lot.
You don’t get it. They aren’t making money from him because their advertisers won’t touch his content. If they can’t run ads during his segments then they make no money from him. I’m not defending RUclips vs him, I am just explaining how it works. For him to have his own integrity in his presentations then he works without ad content. It’s like public tv stations that don’t run ads. He makes his money doing photography jobs and this other work is his personal passion. You’ll notice that some RUclipsrs are getting their own sponsors. He could do this, but he doesn’t want to. He’s not doing this for the money, there’s something behind that.
He is so emotionally invested in his work. You can 100% see he cares about these people and their stories. I love his channel. Great Podcast.
he's also brave, coming from his neighborhood to his "studio" in skid row & doing what he does,
& it brings him bad days,
he's helped people who try to play him for more money & he has to wade thru those feelings, none of us are saints (unless some of us are) but Mark walks the walk, at least with his program.
Edit: 28 mins in, when he's asked if he reads the comments, he says very few,
& says he's asked all his friends if they leave comments on YT & none of them ever have & he never has,
basically saying that only losers leave comments anyway, so....

yeah he cares so much, he doesn't do anything for them - just pays them for the interview and sends them on their way.
Totally disagree there. This individual is an excellent photographer, an extremely intelligent individual and a successful entrepreneur. He is also a psychopath (or sociopath according to the definition you follow).
His comparison of exploitative behaviour with market dynamics tells a lot about his moral compass. Then you have his comments in the beginning about knowing how to mould himself to other people in order to get what he wants and his comments, later, about not caring a fiddlers' fart about anyone else, and his overtly soft and caring performance in other parts of the interview are telltale signs of manipulative behaviour and moral posturing of psychopaths.
He doesn't need to show people's faces in order to tell their story. The humiliation and exposure he imposes on people that are in a weak state, is evidence of his lack of morality. It's a bit like a movie director who wants to show two people made love and goes into pornography (totally unnecessary) except this is 10 times worse. People involved are in a weak, fragile, condition. They are not voluntary consumers like those he mentions when he talks about hotels "exploiting" his need for sleep...

Before discovering your videos I just called ppl junkies, losers, degenerates, and lazy. This channel has given me more compassion and understanding. Thank you.
And thank you, for opening your mind to the struggles of people which you can't possibly fully understand. It's the most frustrating, heartbreaking, aggravating thing I've had to experience as a recovering addict... Seeing, for example, on my local breaking news Facebook page. Someone overdoses (they use police scanners I believe)..
Now, here's someone that's potentially just died, right? The comments.. are just FILLED with people saying nothing but, "stupid junkie, got what they deserved," "they chose this! They should have just stopped doing drugs," "good, one less scumbag junkie on the streets," "Personally I hope they all kill themselves." It kills me... How can people be saying this about someone's friend, someone's brother.. Someone's son or daughter.
How many addicts are there in just America alone? Do people think these are ALL just people who are stupid? People who are lesser than themselves? With the size of this epidemic could it not be reasoned that these are people like anyone else, but with a problem? That maybe it could happen to anyone?
How can you not feel bad for a guy who gave up every piece of what made him.. *him.* They give up friends, family, money, shelter, their bodies, you name it.
That's not freaking normal! Something has to be causing this that's pretty effed up! Your average dumbass that you have no pity for his stupidity isn't going to be dumb enough to do that! The average lazy mother effer isn't going to be doing that! They are riding on the backs of all the hard workers at their JOBS right now! We've all worked with that one guy who you never once saw him doing any work!
No, this is something different. Something bigger. You may not know what it is but you should make sure you figure it out at least a bit before you go on being happy about their death don't you think?!

@@danielnelson4881 you’re welcome. A few family members of mine are addicts. They’ve done so much bad stuff to support their habits I was so disgusted and embarrassed by them.
Every morning I listen to these stories when I get ready for work for about a year now. Its made me more grateful but mostly more aware that I shouldn’t be judging anyone with addictions. I truly don’t know their story. And listening to these people breaks my heart into a million pieces.

Shoulda bought Wranglers, I knew it! I really wanted to have kids too.. Had to get Walmart brand genes that make life an absolute misery, darn you mom! I mean.. Walmart! I mean come on... My great grandma was in an insane asylum for so many years and she still managed to pass her insane asylum inhabiting genes on! They couldn't have just quit there!? (this was in the early 1900s by the way. She was just depressed. She didn't get out of bed other than to go to the bathroom, and barely sustain herself, for a year+ and that was the final straw I guess... No motivation? Hmm... They got any free beds up there at Northern State? Lol you caught me rambling again.. Like anyone ever DOESN'T haha)

What's funny is if you try to do an interview with "successful" people, like say the way Joe Rogan does, you will never get pure honesty. What you get is the mask that "successful" people invented that allowed them to survive. They may even have the same kind of trauma as some of the broken people in Mark's videos, but you will always get the mask. Perhaps that is what ultimately determines who survives and who doesn't. If you can't create a mask or identity that allows you to control negative emotions you will never be able to bear the strain of existence without drugs or crime or whatever.

Didn't know he didn't get paid for his amazing work. Categorically, one of the best channel on here! Addicted to watching it.
I am listening to this interview after watching many of his Skidrow interviews. For me, the background noise (sirens, music, screaming) does not distract, but rather fully support the stories that the individuals tell. It really sets the scene for the what's talked about - a rough, disrupted, harsh existence. Mark, thank you for all your energy that you are pouring into showing a sheltered person how life can be.

The man is changing lives and deserves an equal amount of positive reinforcement and assistance to support the message of others.

I give more money to the homeless without concern for what they'll spend it on. The emphasis has become my doing what helps another human being. To let them know I care. I see them. They're Not invisible.

His interaction with the Whittaker family from West Virginia is so touching. You can tell that he is a VERY caring, compassionate person. The way those two non-speaking Whittaker boys' faces BEAM around him tells it all. He has helped that family sooo very much...like a SAINT. He never disrespected or exploited them...EVER. It's a wonderful series of RUclips episodes to watch on his playlist! I admire his work...GREATLY.

I just wish their was more kindness in the world and more people like mark. I try to show kindness to everyone I meet. I live in an area in uk full of deprivation and drugs, alcoholism, MH issues and prostitution, homelessness. I stop and chat to lots of them and help where I can. We live in a harsh world x

Mark to me is like a National geographic level photographer. I love that he shoots raw real situations. And yes we must find a way to prevent trauma and abuse of our darling children. We need to learn better survival skills for our future peoples hearts and souls. Thank you mark for all you do.

@@intoodeepstl314 I’ve watched several episodes. They both do a good job of raising addiction awareness; however, Intervention is much more predictable. It always shows the negative effects an addict has on their family and ends with “surprising” the person at an intervention meeting with family members reading letters they’ve written to this person about it. The addict then makes a choice to go to rehab or not. At the very end is a quick follow up about how rehab went and if it was a success or not. Ya’ll be the judge if this sounds like a copy of what SWU does.
Being a former homeless drug addict I don’t think the people you interview see this as exploitation. I know what it feels like to want to be heard or for someone to just give a crap. I think this is healing. And money helps even if it goes to drugs because at least that night they didn’t have to do anything dangerous just to get well. I think this is beautiful. Thank you for not allowing money to hold you back from your art. ❤️

It's like paid gig work for the people and they get to share their story with the world. That's fair work and as whole the project helps more people than just the ones who tell their stories, by bringing attention and also practical help like money to shelters and orgs that help people. And this is far less exploitative work than most other work people on the streets do!
I think the project overall is fantastic, even if some people react negatively. It's so important for the wider society to see the homeless and other unfortunate people as human beings and without hearing these stories it can be very difficult for many. That's exactly how dehumanisation works in every context, you need to have that personal connection to stop dehumanisation even if it's only one way connection as in these stories (and online in general, same as with social media creators).
I'm also a former homeless drug addict. I'd sign up so quick for this. None of it feels exploitive to me, not in a predatory kinda way. It's a one hand washes the other kind of thing. Doesn't get more fair than that.
I get very uncomfortable when he interviews addicts & sexworkers who were abused: and 99% of them had horrific childhoods if you watch regularly. He always, always, says: 'so you were having sex with your parent/Uncle/stepDad'. No. Just , no. That implies consent. They were kids, not capable of consent & they were raped.
Mark's interviews give us a birds eye view or glimpse into someone else's life that you wouldn't normally get to have access to. He's so informative and treats everyone with respect and kindness.
Have you thought about the possibility that those people are not better off having their story put out without restraints? He's exposing them completely. No need to show their faces or identifying them in order to tell their story.
The way he said "Everything we do is either an act of love or fear" , the look of his face, the sound of his voice and how deeply he was touched by this shows how deeply good person he is. I hope that he is thinking about some big project of how to prevent children abuse in USA, because as far as I watch his channel I realize, that this is the root of all evil that happens in society...

I wish there was a way to raise consciousness in people who end up having kids just by accident (which is most of them, I suspect). There is only one chance to raise a child without crippling trauma and the first 5 years or so are absolutely critical. If you can't sustain a safe and loving environment for a child for that length of time, there is simply no reason to have kids.
I think anyone that ultimately follows Mark knows his intention and generosity in his work. That's what keeps everyone coming back. Those 3am notifications make my day.

@@RealNickTheCoolest His answer to the question the interviewer asks at 46:33. Particularly, his reaction and answer at 47:05 for the next 15-20 seconds. That pain is deep and personal. That is not empathy. He can feel the pain of people on the skid row because that is HIS pain as well. But he is not using the same coping mechanism like them ie drugs. His preferred method of numbing is work. Mark is a workaholic.
This man is an absolute genius...
He is a sweetheart, very artistic and a hard worker but a genius he is not. A genius would not think that "everything we do is either done out of love or fear" is a logically defendable position. Not trying to hate i love mark he has made my life better and obviously done a lot of good its just the over use of "genius" just bugs me a bit.

Mark is a precious soul. Because of his channel, it has opened my eyes to the needs of very broken and hurting people on the streets. I would have never known the complexities of people's lives if I hadn't come across his videos. My prayers have become more fervent and specific about children who are being abused and for pimps, drug addicts, and prostitutes. I am now looking for a program where I can be trained in outreach ministry. So I am grateful to Mark..

These people almost all have childhoods full of neglect and abuse. It's that simple.
Please don't stop the Appalachian interviews, these people resonate with me as I'm also living rurally in a mountainous area, and these people are so humble and kind.
Mark needs his own show on TV. He gets interviews that other's can't. He's got a heart of gold.

Marks channel will the first channel to show and explain the NEW AGE THERAPY of how to treat ppl when they are in their addiction. His PHOTOGRAPHY WORK IS AMAZINGLY GREAT. Marks work is extremely important to the world. I am a First Responder who deals directly with the issues we are facing in society.
Mark is a man of true strong character and values who can manage to take this level of work face on. I can clearly see that he has great purpose in his work and research.
He sheds a bright light to what we all must be aware of, on what is going on and around in our lives.
Mark is laying down the first brick and foundation for our rebuilding.

As I have always said: Mark would not be able to go mainstream to a major network like Netflix OR HBO because someone else would try to change his platform. It would no longer have the rawness.
Yup. The only way he could keep doing this is we financially support the channel. Imagine if every subscriber was a patron for even $5.00/month just to appreciate his work, and help him keep doing this. Folks don’t realize how much work goes into it, and we get more out of it. We are being educated. I have learned more from his channel than my whole college education. It encapsulates everything wrong in our society.

His channel isn’t monetized therefore it is important to support him financially. If he worked with HBO or Netflix, he wouldn’t have 100% control. HBO/Netflix would sensationalize the content. When the subjects have to be paid, the integrity would be muddied.
Yeah I think if he wound up on Netflix or anywhere else, someone else's agenda would show through. I feel like the work would lose its lustre and authenticity. I hope he doesn't do this with some major company like that.

He said it himself: most of these people are beyond help by simply giving them money. They are so broken that the most he hopes to achieve is to try to raise awareness about what child abuse, neglect and trauma does to people. He's not a fundraising operation for homeless people.

I truly think Mark deserves a Nobel prize for his work. I’ve never seen these as exploitative but rather it allows us to learn and empathize with others who we may have been quick to judge. Also all the comments I’ve ever read have been positive and supportive of the interviewee.

Mark helps me stay clean, every single day, by watching his videos. They remind me where I came from, and where I could end up if I went back. I think he's an amazing human being with a huge heart. He's an inspiration to us all. His photography work and interview skills are fascinating!

I've been watching Mark Laita ~Soft white underbelly for a little over a year. The videos are the most realist raw & uncut interviews from all walks of life. I never knew Mark was a photographer. I myself love photography. Just want to say thank you for sharing a part of the world that most people sweep under the rug. You are amazing ❤

Wow! I wish I could have seen this years ago. I've been watching SWU for a long time and hearing Mark's thought and motivations of why he does the interviews adds so much context. You can tell that Mark has such a great soul. The thought of someone not accepting his unconditional help & kindness literally caused him pain & that showed all over his face.
Mark Laita is so heroic and inspiring, his work it's so important and transcendental. his series has been pivotal in my understanding of the human predicament, and our collective struggles, failures, and triumphs. I don't understand why his series hasn't been picked up by Netflix, seems like such a huge missed opportunity.
Mark helps these people so much... Don't forget that. He forms relationships and tries to help them. Many of them he has helped get off dope, get apartments etc. He has a good heart. I admire his work.

Facts!
One of the most misunderstood things though is that family dysfunction doesn't necessarily start with someone taking drugs or becoming an alcoholic. It can often start with a parent getting a terminal illness and being unable to work. Suddenly their kids are being put at a major disadvantage, having to move house because they cannot afford the same life anymore, and one thing leads to another. And it is absolutely nobody's fault. It is tragic and it could happen to any of us.
Finally we get to hear Mark's story.
Mark, you are the kind of person who we need in this country to be great leaders! You are a total empath, intelligent, caring, optimistic, driven, selfless, people oriented, honest. I wish you would run for president. You would be amazing because you get the human condition, which is lacking in all of our politicians. Our country is in desperate need of YOU!!!
I'm sorry I'm just seeing this podcast. I've followed and watched Soft White Underbelly religiously for years now. And to see this side of Mark really brings it home for me. I knew he was a giving person, but to see how emotional he gets and how deeply affected he is by these people he has on his channels brings it to another level for me. Thank you, Mark. Your heart shows through your art.
We should petition for RUclips to monetise Mark's channel. It is such a revolutionary work and helping people understand homelessness and the like. Advertisers may be able to be convinced to advertise on the channel as part of their philanthropy. Most large corporations do do philanthropic work.

This was so interesting ! I admire Mark so much - he's an incredible human being for making it possible for us to hear all these people's life stories. There are so many judge-mental people in this world who are just disgusted with the homeless and the people living on skid row simply because they don't have a clue as to how these individuals ended up this way. I'm a very compassionate person who always wants to help others but I have to tell you that I have learned so much from "Soft White Underbelly". People are people everywhere in the world and as Mark said, "we all struggle in life". I believe by Mark bringing out the awareness of the unfortunate in this world - the abused and neglected children, the mentally ill, the people addicted to substances that he is doing such a great service to everyone. Mark I wish you all the best with your passions in life. ❤❤❤

Only discovered Mark recently but he has the most important RUclips channel there is.
I do no think Mark is exploiting people for money. If anything, he is showing everyone who watches his videos a reality that exists in this world, some of which we may not want to know. Furthermore, unless he was a non-judgmental person these people would not pour their hearts and lives out to him. Thumbs up to what he is doing, it is admirable.
His channel is one of the best on RUclips.
The picture part of Mark's videos is the best part. It's the icing on the cake. As the camera pans down slowly it allows you to rethink the whole interview. Thus allowing you to create a deeper connection with the person being interviewed. I honestly believe the videos would not be as impactful if there was no picture at the end.
Definitely! A photos worth 1,000 words. The photo usually plays at the climax in the interview. Usually when you’re listening to the persons worse part of the story, or when something in their story resonates or clicks and you grow a deeper understanding and compassion for them.

Just discovered soft white underbelly yesterday and must say it was probably the most impactful you tube channel I have come across. No doubt his pictures are phenomenal but his patience and respect during interviews is commendable.

What a great interview! I run nonprofit that deals with homeless and their pets and he is exactly right on about helping these people and the work and time that goes into trying to help them is exhausting! I can relate to SO much of what he is saying!

He's bringing attention to people we would usually ignore, and how people become invisible. It is very worth doing. Many of the people Mark interviews were abused as children and weren't protected.

Totally disagree there. This individual is an excellent photographer, an extremely intelligent individual and a successful entrepreneur. He is also a psychopath (or sociopath according to the definition you follow).
His comparison of exploitative behaviour with market dynamics tells a lot about his moral compass. Then you have his comments in the beginning about knowing how to mould himself to other people in order to get what he wants (standard definition of psychopathic behaviour) and his comments, later, about not caring a fiddlers' fart about anyone else, and his overtly soft and caring performance in other parts of the interview are telltale signs of manipulative behaviour and moral posturing by psychopaths.
He doesn't need to show people's faces in order to tell their story. The humiliation and exposure he imposes on people that are in a weak state, is evidence of his lack of morality. It's a bit like a movie director who wants to show two people made love and goes into pornography (totally unnecessary) except this is 10 times worse. People involved are in a weak, fragile, condition. They are not voluntary consumers like those he mentions when he talks about hotels "exploiting" his need for sleep...
Total psychopath.
I wonder which positive impact on these people's lives you can point out, that derived from his work.
He is basically doing a 21st century freak show.
I'm not talking about all his work, though. I'm talking about those interview where people would be better off not being identified. Fragile, weak people who can be persuaded into exposing themselves by persuasive persons, even though, if they were stronger, they would always refuse to abdicate their privacy.
@@geraldrada That is one point of view. I believe you miss the real point of his work. I have personally as a survivor felt more at home watching these videos. Seeing people who have gone through similar tragedies in life helps us not feel alone. So often people's stories miss the important part of how they lived through their ordeal and what all that ordeal consisted of...people have been silenced and beaten to keep the truth in the dark. Mark is helping their truths be seen in the light of day with no judgement. I could imagine if someone had a regular childhood then this could look as described. Everyone's truths are different and need to be seen with no corporate agenda attached to water it down.
@@jooliagoolia9959 What needs to be assed is if these people really want to have their problems exposed like this, if they have the ability to make that decision at that point in life (when they are down and suffering) and if that exposition of their lives is not harmful to them later on (if they do not regret it).
I am of the point of view that it is harmful. Apart from your feelings of pity and everyone else's, I don't really see any positive outcome from this type perverse curiosity. It seems to me that it is more useful for the Roman audience, than to the people themselves who lose their privacy in the process. Just the other day a youth committed suicide when his rape became public.
You have to understand that there are dozens of different ways to get to know reality without destroying the subject's privacy and anonymity. Reading is one way which will grant you more depth while preserving the personal life of the individuals.
The other point is the photographer himself and his incongruencies. You don't seem to regard those at all. As to the awareness of how psychopaths can manipulate people, that, I think, seems to be even further from your awareness. Don't take it as an insult. It's probably a good sign. It means you have not faced many in your lifetime.
As for "helping their truths be seen in the light of day with no judgement" - Please review the interview. There are numerous instances in which he clearly ridicules these people, not with words (because that would obviously play against him and tear down the mask) but with his body language and facial expressions. I cannot imagine a psychologist talking about these people and their problems with his sniggering and wry smiles.
Finally, I would ask you not to make unfounded accusations. I am not analysing this guy with any "corporate agenda attached". I can't even imagine what that could mean in this particular case: he does not belong to any corporation, I do not belong to any corporation, I am not supportive of partisanship spirit (since politics is not football) and I do not know about his political views. It was the first time I have had contact with him or his work.
He strikes me as an average psychopath/sociopath. His mask can fool the first encounter but does not pass re-examination, which is a poor outcome in terms of psychopathy since most of them need careful analysis to find the spots not covered by their fabricated personalities.
What a fascinatingly insightful and intelligent person. The videos Mark produces help to humanize those people in society that are seen as worthless. They all have a story
The work you are doing is invaluable. People need to see and know the struggles which are plaguing our population today, and why. Thank you for sharing your work with everyone, there is so much to learn, and a lack of empathy from people toward their fellow man. The work you’re doing is shining a light on the down trodden and disenfranchised in our society.
Marks videos have helped me a lot. I’m 26 and a recovering heroin addict. I’ve only got about a year clean and it’s hard. I had a real bad childhood just like all the people he interviewed. I see my future self in them.... and it terrifies me. Since finding SWUB I’ve made strides towards getting mental help and getting my life on a better track. I don’t want to end up being interviewed by mark........

Amazes me that Mark gets so emotional remembering some of his subjects, after hearing, seeing and living all he has experienced. What a guy! Initially I Fell in love with his voice and the compassion he showed to the people he photographed. Now, he has become a hero of mine. That’s crazy but to say that he deserves it is a major understatement he really is doing the work and helping people on the front lines in one of the most dangerous and misery stricken area in the world, the amount of broken souls on skid row is unbelievable and there’s not a single iota of empathy coming from our elected officials aka “Our Leaders”

This is the absolute best interview that I have ever heard. I have been following Soft White Underbelly for a while now. His interviews have been an eye opener to me and makes me understand what these people are going thru or what they have gone thru in their past. His videos have been recommended to my friends.
I think it’s important for Mark to hear that simply by giving these people a voice and medium from which to speak, he IS helping change their lives. In my travels the one consistently recurring theme within the peoples I encounter is the need to be heard, acknowledged, recognized and dare I say accepted. Mark is giving those he encounters that kindness.

Just ran into SWU yesterday. Have already watched four. Was drop-jawed that you were allowed to capture what’s a snapshot of peoples’ most vulnerable depths and facets; their revealed traumas, the ongoing damage, and their dreams in spite of impossible circumstances…
You mentioned here the photo that’s most important to you (always shown at end of the video) and that it’s too large to show all at once. When I saw the first one, I knew it was creative genius. The pan is such beautiful art, all on its own. I look forward to each one.
