Good that it is being addressed - corruption should in no way be accepted. Corruption can be eliminated if it is clear that it is unacceptable and it is clear that it is not the norm.

Haha, in reality it does not work that way. Criminality isn't legal and not accepted - still there's more criminality than legal things in the world.
And you forgot a very important aspect - it's the punishment - which should be very serious - a lot tougher than for civil cases.

The only way you remove corruption from politics, is to remove humans from politics. And I’m not sure even THAT would do it. But this is nothing new.. humans are ALL susceptible to corruption. Everyone has a price. And these companies and countries have DEEP pockets. It’s only human to try to get the best advantage for your country/company. And on the other side, it’s only human for a politician to line their pockets and make their life better for a little extra push to help those companies and countries. I’m sure many even convince themselves their doing nothing wrong in doing it. This is one of the failings of humanity. Never going to be fixed. Chalk it up next to belief in religions and a dozen other human basic instinctual failings that do not serve us well in society.

The real cost in corruption is not the money, but the demoralizing effect it has on the people. For sure politicians should be paid well; in the end they are the one who have to handle critical information in a good way and should be pretty competent. But also they shouldn't just strive for money, but find intrinsic value in their actions as representatives of the european people.
And this is the damage they do: demoralizing actions at the top means nothing else, than an action against the people who vote for you, who pay their taxes for you, who determine their life to live in a system you construct right now, and if you take actions against all this, the people are really discouraged to take part of this system. Thats the true damage of corruption.

Certainly her party would have NEVER kicked her out, she would have suffered no career consequences at all , and what is worst: people would have continued voting for her as nothing happened.

everyone is jailed when they break conflict of interest forms they sign. one simple solution, which lawyers always hate! corruption is part of being a lawyer no surprise, like saying fish live in water. after governing authorities are mostly scientists (STEM), back grounded people, corruption will go away since these types have licenses which prohibit corruption, or the STEM jobs are lost. In contrast, lawyers jobs are mostly being paid in corrupt ways to protect the rich from the poor.
