    What a gift you are to anyone trying to sort out these old but more excellent machines. We had an old New Home 920 and couldn't even find a manual for it but learned it is now Janome so Janome New Home 618 is the same machine it is also listed as a White Model 7 hundred something. So many old machines have been out of use for a long time. So we got a Brother se400 then someone gave us a Singer 457A in cabinet it was frozen up and I am working on it just ordered a white vertical shaft gear as per your recomendation so now the needle position lever isn't working and I am trying to get the bottom oil plate off its a rubber plug any way so then someone gave us a Brother SE2400d now som,eone is giving us an old Singer. All I wanted to do is sew some boat cushions as per Sailright.

      Wow, you're like a vintage sewing machine magnet! I think those machines are coming to you for a reason. Did you know you can get free downloads of most Singer Instruction Manuals directly from Singer? I mention this b/c it sounds like they will keep finding you. You just enter the model number in the search box and it will list any manuals available for download. For example, here is the model 457: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 The manual for model 457 is 66 pages long and explains all the features of the machines, how to use them, plenty of basic sewing tips and how and where to lubricate the machine. Thanks for watching my channel and good luck.

    So happy to see a new series, Andy! Love the new draperies.
    I just picked up a neglected circa 1954 Singer 201-2 that's needs a lot of TLC. So far, I've cleaned and rewired the motor and cleaned all the rest of hte machine's moving parts--next up: rewire the light and plug, and then remount the motor.
    The ratchet handle saved the day for me, too, with those "A" screws! But if that hadn't worked, I would have resorted to my Harbor Freight impact screwdriver set.

    Your motor runs so quiet! Thanks so much for these videos, Andy. I’ve got all the parts you removed in this video removed from my machine. I’m not touching anything else until I see you do it. Well, okay, I could not resist disassembling the tensioner. I found out I was missing a piece! I’ve learned so much about tension from you, I felt comfortable doing this. I just took off the parts I am familiar with, up through the two tension discs. Luckily, Thrifty Farm Girl had the piece I was missing. The piece was shipped within an hour from when I ordered it, and I got it yesterday. Now the tensioner is all reassembled and put away until you start working on yours.

      Wow, that's great! Happy for you. My friend said he has replaced a few by scraping or grinding (with a Dremel tool) a slot across the top of the broken one and then used a screw driver to take it our. I used a dremel with a narrow etching tip and as carefull as I could and it ripped the top of the broken screw right off in about 3 seconds! OH, Man! So, what now? I ended up using a utility knife and the can opener of an old Swiss Army Knife to painstakingly dig our the "barrel' if the broken off screw. It is hollow inside. I went supper slow b/c I was very worried I would damage the threads in the hole of the motor. It finally all came out and I use a small cylindrical wire brush to clean the threadS. My new cap was plastic and I brushed a tiny bit of grease on the thread and it went right in, smooth as butter. That was the best part of replacing that screw, that the new one went right in, and believe me, I did not over-tighten it. Good luck.

      @andytubesewing1953  Год назад

      it was a hassle for me. My friend said he just pressed a screwdriver into the broken top and unscrewed it slowly. When I pressed a screwdriver into mine it just poked a hole into the hollow bottom part of the screw, haha. 👀 I used a utility knife, upsidedown, to press into the inside of the broken part of the screw and dragged it counterclockwise. Sometimes part of the screw broke off. I used an eyedropper and put a drop of WD40 around the edge of the screw and that helped. I was concerned that using this method would damage the threads inside the hole but it worked out OK. I bought two new plastic cap screws for about $10 but they are twice as much now. There are many sellers if you just Google "singer cap screw #193543" Shop for the best price. OH, you can also buy used ones and they cost less but are made of bakelite and as old as your broken one so it's risky IMO.

      I made a model 99K video 3 years ago today. It's here waiting for you 😀It's one of nineteen videos in my model 99K playlist.
      The entire playlist is here: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKIIUgkEujqHc9iNWN9NPW2Z
      The motor video is here: ruclips.net/video/TmnnvGrEfmg/видео.html I have not had to replace motor brushes very often at all. It is usually something else that affects motor speed, like the foot controller ot a dirty commutator on the motor.
      In the playlist is a video for cleaning the foot controller: ruclips.net/video/gcIB6VJ56Yk/видео.html
      You can clean the commutator with a rubber eraser, but I like to polish it with a Diamond D Brush Seating Stone.
      Here is a video of the process: ruclips.net/video/rpTy_Bz3prA/видео.html
      Thanks for watching my channel, Brenda, and good luck.

    Hello. Please help. I removed the clamp screw and placed the stop motion clamper in the right position. Screwed clamp screw back on turned it to left and heard the click when turned to the left. But the needle bar does not go up and down. I noticed when you removed the back silver round cover with thumb screw when you turned the hand wheel stuff on there moved. When I turn hand wheel nothing in there moved. The needle bar does not move either. Please help.

      Step back a moment, Gloria. When the silver Stop Motion knob is turned to the left you are putting the machine in Bobbin Winder Mode. That means you are STOPPING the Sewing Motion of the needle bar, feed dog, take-up lever, etc. That is why it is called the Stop Motion knob. The purpose is to ONLY allow the motor to turn the handwheel so you can wind a bobbin. The idea is to save wear on the sewing parts when you only need to wind a bobbin. For Normal Sewing, you turn that silver knob to the RIGHT until it Clamps Down on the Washer and will not turn any farther. That engages ALL the Sewing Motion Parts; the needle bar, take-up lever, feed dog, etc. It appears this machine is new to you and may I suggest you read over the Instruction Manual that you can download a free PDF copy of here: ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/manuals/15-91.pdf The Original Singer Instruction Manuals were created by Singer engineers who designed the machine and offer very good, IMO, instruction for the best way to operate the machine and get the most use of it with the least amount of frustration. It is usually well worth the time to read and keep handy. If I have misunderstood the problem please let me know and we will keep moving forward. It is an incredible machine and I'm happy you have it.

    Добрий день вам. Сам занимаюсь ремонтом швейных машин но двигателя с червячной передачей которые использовались в швейных машинах честно говоря вижу в первые . Хотя и сам имею singer 411g , это хорошая машина и самое замечательное в ней это плавность хода. Но запчасти в Украине просто не реально найти жаль конечно такие машины для быта просто супер.
    Удачи вам.

      Привет. Спасибо, что посетили мой канал сегодня. Модель Singer 301A была первой машиной, которую я увидел, с двигателем типа PA с червячной передачей и текстолитовым маховиком. Я был поражен, и это была любовь с первого сайта. Позже он использовался на модели 401A: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO и модели 403A: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg, а также на модели 400 ". G" модели, сделанные в Германии, включая ваш 411G.
      В этом видео 15-91 я впервые увидел другой червячный мотор, хотя 15-91 был сделан за десятилетия до 301А и 401 и т. д. Я думаю, что мотор 15-91 сильнее, но PA Тип двигателя, используемый в моделях с наклонной иглой, легче в работе и не требует фитилей из войлочной шерсти и смазки. Оставайтесь в тепле и, пожалуйста, посетите снова, когда у вас будет время.

      @@ЮрийСугерей На машине 401 класса. Вы можете отрегулировать расстояние от иглы до крючка, но если вы пропускаете, сначала проверьте синхронизацию и толкатели на кулачковом стеке. Если они хороши (на моделях американского производства), есть способ переместить сам крючок ближе к игле, я полагаю, что немецкие модели могут сделать то же самое. Less than you think if you mean an application to the worm gear/handwheel gear. After cleaning I use TriFlow Clear Synthetic Grease and apply it with an artist acrylic paintbrush to both gears. I don't fill the cavity or anything like that. Yes, there are wicks for the motor shaft bearings. There are several videos about the motor and working on them if you search. Here's a nice blog that folks use too; vssmb.blogspot.com/2012/01/complete-how-to-re-wire-potted-motor.html

    If the wheel is not not working or turning what's wrong with it

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  8 месяцев назад

      Hey Billy, the two most common reasons I have found is that the bobbin case hook area has a part loose and is blocking anything turning but the primary one is if the machine has set idle for years or decades. It's full of dried oil and all the moving parts that dried oil just acts like a glue or varnish and sticks. Everything together. All the parts on the machine move in unison so you're saying you can't turn the hand wheel but it might be the needle bar is stuck in the bearing from drive oil. The first thing I do is go to singer.com/support and download a free copy of the instruction manual for the model, then look in there to see where to oil it. Then give it a nice heavy oiling and try and wiggle the hand wheel and get it moving. If that's not enough then I'll take a hair dryer and apply hot air inside the nose, the needle bar and underneath to all the parts I can see that would move usually the same place as you oil right? There's also a little removable cover on the back side that has a lot of moving parts 95% of the time that oil and heat will get everything moving. The other option is if you don't mind chemicals instead of applying oil put kerosene into the oil ports instead of oil and that can help loosen up the old oil. Once the machines running, then put good oil in and run it for a few minutes to flush out the kerosene. You can use a penetrating oil like PB, blaster or WD-40 also. But then you have to flush that out too. Good luck. It's a heck of a machine

    Ray Elkins RUclips channel in a video entitled "Singer 201, 15,1200 Potted Motor Removal"
    shows how a machinist (himself) makes short work of removing those "awful" screws. You
    would have been successful if you had used a solid hammer instead of that rubber one. Hope this helps. Thanks for this video.

    • @andytubesewing1953

      Thanks for watching my channel, Dennis. I hope you enjoyed the video. I'm familiar with Ray Elkins and the video you mention. For other viewers reading this, this is the video Dennis referred to: ruclips.net/video/uGub1XiTNR8/видео.html I've watched a number Of Ray's videos over the past few years. I also have a 2 oz brass hammer like he uses. I am certainly not a machinist like him, but over the years of working on sewing machines I've tried several techniques for removing stubborn screws. I've found a metal hammer doesn't always work for me. I understand the theory that a metal hammer creates a better "shock" to the screwdriver/bit. I've tried heavier hammers too, up to a 12 oz steel ball peen hammer. I've also used different weights of plastic hammers, wood mallets, and hard rubber mallets/hammers. It's been my personal experience that the hard rubber hammers work as well, and sometimes better than a 2 oz brass hammer. I also find it easier to use and I can put more force into the strike. A vintage hickory wood mallet I have works well also I mostly use the 2 oz brass hammer and the hard rubber hammer for my sewing machine work, and you can watch me use both in my videos. To each their own I guess, and in the end I may have been successful using the 2 oz brass hammer, or maybe not. I do know the impact wrench was very easy to use and it worked perfectly. BTW, I called them awful screws because several of my viewers said that about them. For me, a screw is a screw and I don't personify them, only my machines in general by giving them names. Take care.

      Yes, it came in the case. There are several "usage" marks on the finish up close, but that's OK with me. You'll see where it was "tinkered" with later in the series, and screw #175 is missing.
