I bought one of these for cheap and have been using it for a few years. Right now it’s saying E code or something and I’m wondering if I got my code messed up when I locked it last. It’s not an emergency but I do need to get into it. Passports, birth certificates etc Amy be needed

Disagree with many of your points. Hotel staff can be trusted. Also, if a staff card was used in the room door, it will usually be logged. So it can be traced.
