Hey Everyone. I thought I had been clear, and I think I missed the mark in the end. The ending was a response to a subscriber who has been pretty active. While I think it is a fitting theory - I don't believe that's actually what happened. There is no Canon explanation of the origins of the breen. There is a non-canon book series (Typhon Pact) that explains they wear it to prevent racism. I think this is most likely because it's the most 'trek' explanation - unless they are made to be the ultimate baddies. Anyway, I hope that clarifies ;)
Perhaps the suits are their for religious reason. They have been described as being Xenophobic and perhaps it is because they think they are the center of the universe and to allow others to see their true form would in some way prevent them from getting to Breen heaven. Then there is theory B. Much like the Chigs in Space: Above and Beyond, they suites are there to enhance their combat abilities and are so integrated into their bodies that they can no longer live without them. Add on top of that, if nobody knows what your species looks like then it would be very easy to send spies into the midst of your enemies and them never know you are there.
the Breen were around a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away. in star wars return of the jedi, princes lea pretended to be a bounty hunter called Boushh who is Ubess and infiltrated the palace of Jabba the Hutt with a wookie that he claimed to have captured called chewbacca. now if i didnt know better it would say that the Ubess evenlty tuned into the Breen. similar lingo, gear, and no worried about sucidide/death to achieve the goal.
I think that the Breen are a lot like the way Colonel Jack O'Neill from Stargate SG-1 pictured the furlings. Cute cuddly and fuzzy. That's why the Breen wear the suits, it's the only way for their enemies and adversaries to find them intimidating and take them seriously.
I think there was a Breen prisoner at the Dominion Prison Camp Worf and Garak went to ("In Purgatory's Shadow"/"By Inferno's Light"). This leads me to believe that like Starfleet and the Klingons, Breen were secretly captured and replaced with Changelings. I'm thinking that it was this Breen Changeling that persuaded the rest of the Breen to join the Dominion.
The ending of this lore is a very scary horror movie, really. Wow I got chills and my hair stood up. I was so good I listened 3x to it. Well done sir, well done
The Klingons attacked the breen sometime during the second empire, wasn't able to nail down when, but my best guess would be between 2270 and 2350. Either then or sometime before "enterprise"
The Breen were present at the Treaty of Bajor, but don't forget that both Cardassia and the Breen agreed to be PART of the Dominion. Thus the Dominion as a whole signed that treaty. In the picture shown here -> wiki.pegasusfleet.net/index.php/Treaty_of_Bajor where the treaty is signed we only see Dominion representatives, but still there are two Breen to the left in the background.
I actually like the idea the Breen are not one species, but several, that pretend to be one powerful species to keep others from invading. That makes sense from what we know of the Breen and explain why they keep into the suite. It might also explain why they have a unhealthy interest in the UFP, for they consider it a threat to their way of life. That it would lead to descent for the people question why the way they do things. Or just to make themselves seem even stronger for what would be a greater symbol of power then have territory that once belong to the mighty Federation. Praticuraly the capital of the UFP, Earth.
That's an interesting and different aspect. There are books that state they are four races that didn't want to deal with racism - and could possibly see that in the federation.
Yeah, I was surprised that got past Lucasfilm/ 20th Century's legal department when they were first shown. The first place my brain went to was Return of the Jedi when I saw them.
What about the version of the book series "Typhon Pact"? In which the suits of the Breen are used as a way to destroy racism across Breen space? To prevent anyone from knowing from which Breen species one is from?
A future series I intend to do will focus on book Canon only so that I can add more of this with out feeling like I am muddying the waters. I think that was an interesting take but there wasn't a lot of Canon to support it for the main piece. I could have included it in the ending but if you watch sfdebris, you know he was playing that off as a laugh so I was trying to go morbid. Its been a while since I really read that series so I will need to go back and include it in the next series. Should have at least mentioned it though..yea
I read that storyline too. That is more plausible." No race is better than any other, no color is better than any other, no difference is better than any other. Separately we are nothing, but together we all are Breen!"
@@LoreReloaded Actually, I am not sure you read this comment, but there is a canonical proof this may be the case. That there seem to be multiple homeworlds of the Breen. One is a cold world the Cardassians are familiar with. Another is a temperate world the Dominion is. In the episode that introduces Dukat's daughter. Dukat mentions that the Breen homeworld is a frozen wasteland and that they wear the suits to survive in temperate or hotter temperatures. This a cannon origin of the Breen.
Weyoun says in later DS9 that that was a myth and that its quite hospital and temperate. Which is now the accepted canon. Maybe Weyoun was lying i suppose.
The Cardasians prefer a hot climate whereas the Vorta and Changelings do not. Maybe it’s just that Breen is on the more chilly side that the Cardasians view as a frozen wasteland (hyperbole).

Idk the Breen seem more likely to sort of enjoy pain. I keep thinking about how a Breen was captured by the Founders and the Breen still wanted to be a ally after finding out. Maybe they are a race who have a deadly virus but we've just never seen them. The suit could sterilize everything, and maybe provide painkillers to keep the Breen going. Hell maybe the Breen aren't that effected by the virus and it's only deadly to other races. Would kinda explain their xenophobia and quick acceptance of suicidal missions.

The Breen are a Federation of four different species. Some need the suit. Some don't. They all wear them to discourage race favoritism because they can't know which species is talking to you.
Yea, that was from the 'Typhon Pact'. It's been brought up once already. They, look most any star trek book, are not considered Canon. I was on the fence about using the books because of a few other things I didn't necessarily like (though I found that part of the breen fascinating). I am debating doing a 'Non-Canon' series where we look at the 'EU' that's been expanded on the species.
Great video, I love any content related to the Breen they're so mysterious and weird. However ,I think, in cannon it was a small Klingon Bird of Prey that had to modify its reactor core in a non standard configuration that led to them discovering a method to nullify the Breen energy damping weapon, not the Cardasians. The entire Klingon fleet was then reconfigured to match and the method was adapted to Star fleet tech. However since the Romulans used an artificial micro singularity to power most of their ships it took much longer for them to figure out how to adapt their tech...
This is why i like the books so much better than the official canon. The explanation of the Breen as a coalition of species focused on absolute meritocracy (although inevitably subverted) is much more interesting.
I agree that it's a good book and premise.. I use official Canon because its a slippery slope when you don't..but that's a really good series of books.
I don't know if the Breen wear their suits out of necessity or some other purpose, but this thought sprung to mind. Not knowing who or what you're dealing with is a very effective tactic at getting the upper hand. Bravery in the face of danger is one thing, but taking on an adversary like that, you'd always have a nagging thought in your mind. Who, or *what*, is in there?! The Breen were present at the signing of the Treaty of Bajor, and they may even have gained territory as a result of joining the war. The Dominion, while still the lawful government of Cardassia, granted the Breen Confederacy several territorial concessions from Cardassian holdings. If the Breen retained control of those territories at the end of the war, then their participation could be considered a strategic victory for the Confederacy.
Thumbs up, man this was a different delivery, dry boring and absent of the arrogant misogyny. I really truly enjoy all of your videos man, they are great.
The Breen's attack on Earth is like Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. In theory, it looks good, but in practice you have missed the target. Instead of bombing the earth and San Francisco, the Breen would have been supposed to attack a militarily more significant target. The Utopia Planitia shipyards in Mars orbit. The largest shipyard of Starfleet. The destruction of the shipyards on Mars would have hit the Federation much harder than the attack on Earth. What's your opinion ?
The alpha quadrant powers were in no position to penalize the breen. The federation, and klingon forces were heavily depleted. The cardassians had to focus on completely rebuilding their infrastructure, and the romulans had a huge political upheaval to deal with on top of their own military loses.
So Breen held off using the Energy Dampeners during the attack on earth? Wouldn't it make more sense to use it to deal maximum damage to starfleet HQ and shipyards at sector 001 than the skirmish at Chin'toka?
The attack on earth wasn't an attempt to win, it was an attempt to create fear and discord. They didn't use the weapons - because they didn't want to give away their ace in the hole and they weren't attempting to destroy earth..just attack it.
Worf said during the Second Klingon Empire the chancellor sent a fleet to Breen space and conquer it. It never came back. So before Archer's visits the Valakianw. Oh yes on one of Admiral Marcus screens .mentions Menk embassy in ST:ID. When Voyager first encountered Species 8472 they compared the hull to Bremen biotech. Bremen suits are refrigeration suites but their planet is temperate. The Breen Confederacy never had formal conflict with the Federation. Pirate attacks are known on the SS Vigo and a Cardassian transport. Breen use disruptor technology like the two Beta Quadrant powers. They seem to have a hate relationship with Romulans as one Dominion prisoner said never turn your back on one and the Breen leader wanted Romulus.
The ending was meant to be tongue and cheek. I don't sincerely think that's true lore or even plausible lore. I do think that the Breen have had a rocky relationship with the federation - but I honestly don't know if there's exact canon as to why.
I doubt NX-01 Enterprise could have made it as far as the Breen system, given how far "West" in the Alpha Quadrant it is represented in Star Trek: Online. I know that galactic map is far from the most accurate, but short of taking either the Bajoran wormhole or an Iconian gateway, Breen is one of the furthest places from Sol you can get.
There was a Klingon-Breen war, yea. I don't know that its in any canon series or mentioned. Even so, with the exception of that - they really are left alone. They remind me of the THolians alot.
I know speed and distance is not something trek ever liked to keep pined down, but giving the placement of where the Breen come from and the top (safe) speed of the Enterprise NX-01 (warp 5), they would have to had traveled years (in a straight line) to get there, so no the world they visited could not have been the Breen.
curious, the vadwaur ruled an empire, could the breen be an evolutionary offshoot of the vadwaur that escaped annhilation by the turei coalition, hid and developed via divergent evolution, on an icey planet or moon?
Maybe they wear the suits as a unified agreement to seem 'intimidating'. A sort of thing to make them seem unapproachable and hostile, so people leave them alone?
+ShiftyMcGoggles There is a series of books that explain the suits are because the Breen are actually multiple races and they wear them to prevent bigotry..kind of interesting
+JTN 저스틴 yeah.... Its the best Fan Theory I have ever heard. I haven't been disturbed by concepts in years. Its nice to know I'm not completely desensitized to morbid concepts.
+Lore Reloaded Yeah, I also got that. Cool theory though given that nobody (maybe even their Cardassian and Breen allies) really knows anything about the Breen.
My personal thought was that the majority of Breen were clones - it explains Weyoun's comment that Breen is actually pleasant and the Breen's suicidal attacks.
Just making suggestions is all. I feel these lore channels and I'm referring to many channels, just don't do enough coverage of Klingon, Federation, Federation member states and Romulan battleships and heavy battleships. for instance the Federation Yorktown class heavy battleships served extensively in the Earth/romulan war. the vulcans and andoreans had an impressive lineup of destroyers and battleships, even earth had a few. the federation fielded some of the most powerful battleships in the alpha quadrant. many of those were battlecruiser varients of the explorer ship classes.
THE BREEN SHIPS HAVE AMAZING WEAPONS AND VERY EFFECTIVE IN COMBAT VERSUS THE FEDERATION SHIPS, THE SHIELDS DON`T HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS TECNOLOGY
Wait, I thought that it was a Klingon ship that was the source to repel the Breen weapon. Something about an engineer had done something before the battle and their ship was able to withstand against it. Am I wrong??? I think it was mentioned in an episode.
I really hope star trek Discovery shows us more of the Breen I want to know what they look like why the wear their mask , how cold it's on Breen and so forth
It is Breen came from either race. In Star Trek into darkness the Menk have a representatives on Earth. More likely both race end up becoming member Federation. I admit Dr. Doctor help screw up the ENterpise but that kind.
Maybe I'm Wrong, but I think the Breen Homeworld would be too far out for Enterprise to reach with only a warp 5 maximum engine. It would be like the equivalent of Voyager trying to get back from the Delta quadrant.
The Commonwealth of Menk and Valakis was an interplanetary state in the Beta Quadrant and a member state of the United Federation of Planets since 2236. Star Trek Star Charts: The Complete Atlas of Star Trek In the Kelvin Timeline Movie - Into Darkness have the Menk a representation in San Fransisco
While I like the Star Trek Star Charts - and it's considered atleast semi-canonical - it can't be completely relied upon. Though I find that interesting that it is in there.. Though, I'm sure I don't necessarily have to say it.. my points at the end was me jesting ;)
Perhaps the Breen are a race of Valakian/Menk hybrids. They could be the result of forced genetic splicing via utilizing Valakian stem cells to fertilize Menk ovum. The resulting embryonic tissue would then be utilized for further gene therapies. The Valakian would become partially genetically compatible with the Menk. The subsequent forced breeding would eventually result in the Breen. I think the suits are more for the purpose of concealment as the Breen would see themselves as abominations with no real identity byond the heinous acts that led to their existence. Their hatred towards Outsiders could be the result of the Federation officers who set into motion the events that would lead to their existence and the subsequent extinction of there ancestor races. That's my theory at least.
Yeah speculation on the Breen is all fine and well, but those theories are a bit out there. Wouldn't explain the snout anyways. Best to leave the Breen as mysterious as they are.
That bit about the Breen not being present at the signing? In the episode's novelization, the Breen actually deserted the Dominion once the Cardassians switched sides. Perhaps, if this had held true in the episode itself, their absence would've made more sense.
I honestly didn't know that. I'll do some research and see if maybe there was a scene or two cut out. It could also be revisionist to try to explain their absence. Good catch!
Because the Breen were explicitly mentioned by the Founder as fighting "to the last man", some finessing might be called for. In the novel, by contrast, Kira and Garak learned of the Breen fleet's desertion right after securing the Founder's briefing room. Perhaps, upon getting word that the Founder had chosen to surrender, they all said whatever the Breen phrase is for "screw this" and left, figuring that the state of the Cardassian Union and seeing the Dominion exit the Alpha Quadrant would mean that any reprisals against them would be pretty far down the priority list. Still, the novelization would've been a tidier explanation in my opinion.
They were? Are you sure about that? I only remember seeing Jem'Hadar, Vorta, and the Founder on their side of the table. Though, it's been quite a while since I saw that episode. I'll have to take a look. Thanks.
I watched the actual episode before doing this review and rewatched it. I don't see the breen anywhere.. I'm not above being wrong - but I would need them to be pointed out.
The Breen's attack on Starfleet HQ could be equivalent to Germany's Blitz on British Cities. It is kind of weird how they suddenly attacked StarFleet HQ and yet their were no ships that were in Earth's orbit which could have stopped them before they reached Earths orbit. 21st century anti-terrorist operators would have stopped them sooner because it was basically a terror attack.
Yea, it was meant to mimic terror from world war 2. Interestingly enough, them getting there would have been insanely treacherous as well.. When you look at where the breen were, versus where Earth is.
Lore Reloaded Are the novels canon? I just looked it up and I believe the novel “Tales of the Dominion War” by Keith R.A. DeCandido was the one I read.
I never really bought that the Breen could have reached Earth at all. How far from Breen space to Earth, 5k, 10k light years. That has got to take a couple weeks especially if the are trying to avoid densely populated areas because they would be trying to be unseen. The idea that they would just show up and blast a couple areas is something I just can't wrap my head around. If that is all it would take, then planetary defenses would have to be so strong that nothing could get within 5 light years. Besides, a really good barrage of nasty torpedoes specially constructed for this suicide mission would have been able to render the planet uninhabitable in about 10 seconds. And what about Utopia Planetia. I think I remember something about it being destroyed in this attack, but if not, it would have been a prime target. Not just the facilities, but the people that build all the ships. Kill them and it could take years to get things back on track. Remember, the attack on Pearl Harbor really didn't harm the US's ability to wager war all that much. The refueling or repair facilities were unharmed, the sub pens were intact and a bunch of really crappy planes were destroyed. By the time the battleships were needed, all but two had been repaired. I'm sure the Breen would know what to hit and what wasn't a big deal.

The Dominion, while still the lawful government of Cardassia, granted the Breen Confederacy several territorial concessions from Cardassian holdings. If the Breen retained control of those territories at the end of the war, then their participation could be considered a strategic victory for the Confederacy.
I re-watched DS9 and in the final episode the Breen is there at the treaty signing but it's just they didn't do anything nor were they mentioned
The Breen were at the Treaty of Bajor signing ceremony
indeed they were.
screaming was great really gets me into the feels of the series
+ReactorFox3 I'm here for you
Thumbs up, man this was a different delivery, dry boring and absent of the arrogant misogyny. I really truly enjoy all of your videos man, they are great.
The screaming gave it a nice touch at the end.
It was a slight attempt at levity. I doubt I'll do something like that again.
And most importantly they destroyed the Sicko pimphand!
The breen attack thing is a bit of inconsistent powerscaling where even TOS ships were supposedly capable of worldwide destruction.
There were some Breen at the treaty signing.
yup, don't know how i missed it.
Lore Reloaded it happens, love your videos and you have a new subscriber here.
you don't mess with the breen
The Breen's attack on Earth is like Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. In theory, it looks good, but in practice you have missed the target. Instead of bombing the earth and San Francisco, the Breen would have been supposed to attack a militarily more significant target. The Utopia Planitia shipyards in Mars orbit. The largest shipyard of Starfleet. The destruction of the shipyards on Mars would have hit the Federation much harder than the attack on Earth. What's your opinion ?
This attack had an intimidating goal in this attack.
I like those Breen theories, it would help explain their blatant hostility to the Federation.
Now we know that it's because they are a bunch of narcissists
The alpha quadrant powers were in no position to penalize the breen. The federation, and klingon forces were heavily depleted. The cardassians had to focus on completely rebuilding their infrastructure, and the romulans had a huge political upheaval to deal with on top of their own military loses.
There was at least one Breen at the signing
Multiple actual
Dame they hit earth how bad is this war going?
Dude, your theory makes a lot of sense, but damn that's dark as heck. The screams in the background ... man, that got to me.
What i don't understand is why they joined the dominion. What did they have to gain?
The Breen were at the contract signing. Located behind the Founder.
Agreed
Didn't the klingons send a fleet to Breen space a few centuries before enterprise?
There was a Klingon-Breen war, yea. I don't know that its in any canon series or mentioned. Even so, with the exception of that - they really are left alone. They remind me of the THolians alot.
I know speed and distance is not something trek ever liked to keep pined down, but giving the placement of where the Breen come from and the top (safe) speed of the Enterprise NX-01 (warp 5), they would have to had traveled years (in a straight line) to get there, so no the world they visited could not have been the Breen.
In theTos cartoon, the Klingons had a similar weapon as the breen
curious, the vadwaur ruled an empire, could the breen be an evolutionary offshoot of the vadwaur that escaped annhilation by the turei coalition, hid and developed via divergent evolution, on an icey planet or moon?
That was terrifying
Hah, it was meant to be campy.
One problem I have with Belinda theory on the breen is that breen space is located beyond zindi space. So they can't be the velikien.
What was the title of that Enterprise episode with Archer refusing to give that cure?
Maybe they wear the suits as a unified agreement to seem 'intimidating'. A sort of thing to make them seem unapproachable and hostile, so people leave them alone?
+ShiftyMcGoggles There is a series of books that explain the suits are because the Breen are actually multiple races and they wear them to prevent bigotry..kind of interesting
The Breen were seen at the signing. Watch the episode again.
Indeed..
I was under the impression the Breen breathed ammonia.
Well.. That got dark at the end
So the Breen is all Archer's and Phlox's fault?
That was completely theory crafting on my part. There's nothing that supports it. I was more making a joke based on a critic named SFdebris' theory ;)
We don't know. Theories are not facts.
Doesn't the NX-01 Enterprise have a run in with the Breen? It's never said out right who they are but the design of the ship is unmistakably Breen.
I think they did.
No, that wasn't the Breen they were Triglobulin harvesters
That screaming was incredibly disconcerting
those screams lol..
Well this became dark quickly
The screaming was a bit much. Went on for way too long, and wasn't needed.
THE BREEN SHIPS HAVE AMAZING WEAPONS AND VERY EFFECTIVE IN COMBAT VERSUS THE FEDERATION SHIPS, THE SHIELDS DON`T HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS TECNOLOGY
...what?
well, that got dark quickly..
hahah, i was trying to be campy
Wait, I thought that it was a Klingon ship that was the source to repel the Breen weapon. Something about an engineer had done something before the battle and their ship was able to withstand against it. Am I wrong??? I think it was mentioned in an episode.
It's a creepy theory, yet possible
Lore views the Breen as Star Trek’s creepypasta race. XD
I forgot where I saw it but apparently the ferengi bought their warp drive technology from the breen.
Personally i think the breen are just another offshoot of Vulcans like a more paranoid less aggressive romulian
I really hope star trek Discovery shows us more of the Breen I want to know what they look like why the wear their mask , how cold it's on Breen and so forth
It's a tropical paradise. According to weyoun 7
Star Trek Star Charts: The Complete Atlas of Star Trek
In the Kelvin Timeline Movie - Into Darkness have the Menk a representation in San Fransisco
While I like the Star Trek Star Charts - and it's considered atleast semi-canonical - it can't be completely relied upon. Though I find that interesting that it is in there.. Though, I'm sure I don't necessarily have to say it.. my points at the end was me jesting ;)
Breen is a small seaside resort in the southwest region of the United Kingdom..I have been there many times it can get very dark, especially at night.
That's my theory at least.
in my head canon, The Breen are Humanoid Space Huskys
Yeah speculation on the Breen is all fine and well, but those theories are a bit out there. Wouldn't explain the snout anyways. Best to leave the Breen as mysterious as they are.
They were present in the signing though.
The name is Phlox, not Vlox. And there were two breen present at the surrender signing.
Yea I noted the Breen at the end
The breen were at The signing of The treaty of bajor!
They were, can't believe I missed it.
Basically the Breen ripped off Star Wars by using ion cannons. That's what it looks like their weapons do.
Still, the novelization would've been a tidier explanation in my opinion.
but the breen were at the treaty signing.
They must have been smoking some Dank memes, it's a long bloody journey and a plothole that needs filling.
I remember reading a Star Trek novel about the Dominion Wars that said the three ships responsible for the attacks were disguised as cargo ships
I know there is a book that has the Enterprise-e somehow saving the day..
What signing are you talking about. When the founder surrenders at DS9 they are several breen there.
I think, the Founders wouldn't have been able to conquer the Breen as easily as they did with the Cardassians.
Do you have any evidence for your Breen monster theory?
I find your theory horrific and intriguing.
The Breen actually live on a ice/ glacier planet.
