I think the Leedy has the most full body tone, then the Slinglerland has more low end, and the Ludwig more high end. I grew up playing my dad's Leedy's and the thickness of a lot of those older drums is what really gives them the warmth and fullness. It really is incredible to compare them to today's drums.
Hopefully I am picking up a drum very similar to the Ludwig tomorrow. I needs to be restored, but it looks to be complete. Same wrap, same lugs, and I think it has that exact strainer which I have never seen before. Only thing missing is the snare side head.
Thanks to all for comments. Of course, as I mentioned, I didn’t do anything special with these drums. These are the heads that were on them when they came in and I just tuned them a little. What is wonderful about drums like this is that they sound this good with virtually no attention. The potential for any of these three drums is huge when you think of how the sound will vary based on individual tuning, playing style, choice of heads and snare wires etc. Great drums ranging in age to about 90 yrs! True testimony to the lasting quality produced by these three companies.

So hard to pick a favorite. I love them all. The Leedy and the Ludwig sold yesterday. I love the Slingerland too! If I was gigging a lot I probably would have kept all 3, but might as well let someone else enjoy then. Steve
I agree. The Slingerland 2nd, then the Leedy. Personally I think they all sound great. Keep in mind how old these drums are, plus the difference in the heads. The tuning is close on all the drums.
@@stevemaxwelldrums Hi Steve! Pete Jones here! Hope you are well and planning on being in Chicago in May! So..you're saying the Slingerland is still available? LOL!!!!!
It amazing how good that Leedy Sounds!
He’s such a bad ass drummer
Amazing how good that Leedy and Slingerland sounds. Lovin' it!
Great playing Mr Maxwell!
The Leedy sounds the best, then the Slingerland, and the Ludwig last. They’re all nice snare drums though.
Yep I agree with ya. I think the Ludwig would’ve sounded better if it had a more modern head on it
It’s head selection snares and tuning but yeah, Leedy here for the win all day.
I just got a mid 50’s 6.5 Radio King, Mahogany. It’s in amazing condish. Not solid shell but sounds very similar. I love it.
Love them all but the Leedy is my favorite 😊
Listening with my audio engineer ears on, I'd definitely be picking the Ludwig.
Leedy sounds so good!

Leedy 🙌🏻
😎👍Great tutorial Steve!!!
Solid history!
Imagine how they would sound with the original calfskin heads on them!
amazing
Leedy
I like the Leedy
The Leedy is killer.
Awesome!
I really like the way the Leedy sounds
Personally, I prefer the Slingerland.
Different heads, different sound

classic!
How do you tell if it’s a solid shell? Were all Broadways solid?
Slingerland, then Leedy...all 3 are nice.
I like Slingerland's one!
I do like the Leedy but the Ludwig has better articulation

of the 3, with those tunings:
1) Slingerland
2) Leedy
3) Ludwig

As is, the Slingerland for me.
The Leedy and the Ludwig both sold today.
