Always nice to see and hear you playing‘classical’ style, something we’re at risk of losing as ‘loud, fast and hard’ seem to be the mantra these days. Hitting rather than playing what is a beautiful musical instrument.
Hi Steve! Congratulations on getting one of your favorite kits back in your collection. That kit is gorgeous and I think it’s one of the best sounding kits I’ve ever heard. So warm and punchy and very pleasing to hear. You were great as usual and I could tell you were really enjoying playing it. Now I want one, but I’ll have to downsize a few or my wife will do it for me.....and of course, I don’t want to do that. 😊. Take care and peace and love to you and your family.
I have a set similar to yours ! I had the shells Re wrapped, added 2new Ludwig rack Toms 12x15, 12x14, the Slingerland drums are 9x12 rack Tom ,16x18 Floor Tom , 26x14 Bass drum , replaced all heads and new Slingerland logo on bass .all DW 9000 hardware, Ludwig 6 1/2 x 14 Stainless snare , Paisty 2002 24 and 26” rides
I actually have part of the copper wrap version with the 24" bass, 15" and 20" toms. The wrap is in bad shape and the previous owner changed some hardware but the shells still sound great. It didn't have the Slingerland snare when I got it, sadly. Still, I love it and I'll probably never get rid of it.
What a great story! I absolutely love those drums! Back in 1980 when I was 10 years old, I started taking drum lessons. My teacher had a Slingerland chrome over wood kit. This brings back so many wonderful memories for me! Thank You!
Watching this video convinced me to diabolically plan to take a double bass drum kit to my next jazz cocktail gig...and scare the crap out of eveyone present! 😁 Nice playing Steve!
I own the exact model kit referred to below which Jimmy Fox of the James Gang, and many others, used and is now a part of Rock & Roll history. It is without question the best sounding kit I have ever owned in my life. Along with that kit I also own something you will never, ever see for sale or have an opportunity to own and that is a 100% genuine Slingerland gong with the "Slingerland" official logo etched into the gong by Slingerland. The first and last time I ever saw one of those gongs used was when Phil Ehart of KANSAS used one live in concert. I am the original owner of all these items which I bought brand new in downtown NYC at what was then called "Manny's Music." In fact, it was one of the Manny family members who sold me the items, as well as hard fiber cases for all of the actual drums. These cases were custom made for Manny's Music and were sold only by them I was told. I made my own wooden case for the gong which has kept it looking like new after all these years. The actual drums themselves are beautiful, well kept, and head turning to this very day. They are as follows: Two (2) VIRGIN 14 X 24 Bass Drums with dual spurs, 10 X 14 and 11 X 15 rack toms on the set-o-matic stand, 16 X 16 and 16 X 18 floor toms with legs. Snare is chrome 14 X 6.5. In what was yet another amazing surprise coincidence in my life, after the Niles, IL factory was closed, Mr. Slingerland retired to Florida and my brother, who worked for Cadillac, sold him a brand new Cadillac! He told Mr. Slingerland about my drum kit and then, right there in the dealership, the elder Slingerland was kind enough to give me a call and we talked for about a half-hour about the company, my drums, as well as the gong (which was made for the company in Italy). If you think you can afford it, and you truly want to own these, I am in the process of retiring and downsizing. Write me: RRICKFLYNN@AOL.com and make me an offer I can't refuse.
Wonderful kit, wonderful playing! Loved the life stories, and it would be wonderful as well if you had a weekly program that you could share with us some stories, interviews with your bandmates and others... Many thanks and be safe in this period!!!
Great story! Fellow drummer here. Nice chops, and great sounding kit,w/a snare to die for! I'd KILL for a Slingerland Magnum kit w the Cannon Toms going down to all the lower end Concert Toms, but God only knows if those kits still exist.
Steve I had chrome over wood Slingerland drums. My kit were concert toms 2 22x14 10 12 13 14 15 16 18..I would have loved to have had 3 toms across the front 10 12 13 or 12 13 13...If you ever have anything like this for sale let me know!...My all time favourite kit from my youth. Me too great great memories!!
Those sound awsome, great tone and the snare is especially nice with a great crack and sensitivity, I'd be interested to know how thick the chrome 'wrap' is?
Neal Smith from Alice Cooper just sold his giant COW a few months ago. Could be part of it. To bad the heads didn't give a clue. This kit is a great drumming mystery. Where did it come from ?
Hi Steve: Always great to here you play the classic kit's . Who was first with the c.o.w ? I have a Gretsch c.o.w from the 70's with that sheet metal chrome finish. Thank's.
Cool kit, it must be a fun trip back in time for you! And isn't it amazing how much gear we don't mind carrying when we're young? 🤣 Congrats on finding that beautiful set of drums!
Thank you for the video and great story! Always refreshing to hear such beautiful playing on equally beautiful drums. Musical, tasty and all around pleasing! I was wondering if the c.o.w. Slingerland drums are much heavier than a similar configuration with a plastic wrap. Thanks again Steve!🥁👍👏
Sounds great! Tuned so high. I have an early 70s Slingerland but I keep it tuned medium and muffled for more of a 70s rock vibe. I have to try a jazz tuning. Do you have the internal mufflers engaged?
Matthew Paluch Hi Matt. I haven’t spoken to anyone at DW about Slingerland kit ideas yet, and with Covid priorities are different as well all know. But, these are wonderful shells!
Great Kit and Story. Thanks for sharing... Once again your camera person is killing me with the movement. I almost threw up. How much is a camera stand? Priceless...I know you have snares worth over a $1,000.00 :) Get that guy a nice camera stand please!
Always nice to see and hear you playing‘classical’ style, something we’re at risk of losing as ‘loud, fast and hard’ seem to be the mantra these days. Hitting rather than playing what is a beautiful musical instrument.
very well said.
Way too many words not enough hertas or diddles
ALWAYS loved Slingerland especially C.O.W!!
I love his old school solos.. Some of 'em he's really on fire!!👍🏻🖖🏻❤️
That’s a lovely looking kit. I am pretty sure Neil Peart used the same.
i love the emotional connection you have with this kit Steve, you're having a great time and it really shows in your playing!
What a lovely kit, and a lovely player playing that kit!!
The snare is just killer!!!!!
Love it. Need an early 70's Slingerland kit!
Update:
I got one! Chrome over wood 12,13,14 16, 20!
I love this! Great sounding kit, great playing Steve.
I had a kit like that years ago. It's nice to here what it sounded like years ago.
Great playing, Steve!
That’s one of the best sounding kits you’ve put on video wow

Great drums. I had a Jupiter 9 set. I have a COW 15in. TDR marching snare. The loudest drum ever!
What a great story! I absolutely love those drums! Back in 1980 when I was 10 years old, I started taking drum lessons. My teacher had a Slingerland chrome over wood kit. This brings back so many wonderful memories for me! Thank You!
That kit is gorgeous in looks and sound. Love it.
Dale's Drum Channel Zero Thanks Dale!
In 1970 I had a chrome over wood Slingerland Avante kit (3 rack toms in a triangle formation.) Damn, it was a great kit.
Bringing back memories of vintage steve.
THE BOB DUNCAN EXPIRIENCE Thanks Bob!
Nice set, great story and excellent playing. Love the sound of the Slingerland drums. Memories for me, too!
Jimmy Fox w/ James Gang used a similar setup. Love that kit, Steve.
Awesome kit, Awsome drummer.
Marty Boosinger Thanks Marty!
Steve. Your technique is amazing along with your chops and rhythm
Thanks very much!
I'm looking forward to see what DW does with the Slingerland name. I'm sure John Good will do it Good, if not Great.
Watching this video convinced me to diabolically plan to take a double bass drum kit to my next jazz cocktail gig...and scare the crap out of eveyone present! 😁 Nice playing Steve!
Beautiful Drums, Fantastic Drumming!! Congratulations!
Love the way you tune your snares, Steve. They always sound great.
pdromero09 Thanks!

You and the drums sound great. Your double bd work is beautiful! Love the story.
RICHN1 Thanks so much!

Love your stories as well as your playing... keep posting
Wonderful kit, wonderful playing! Loved the life stories, and it would be wonderful as well if you had a weekly program that you could share with us some stories, interviews with your bandmates and others... Many thanks and be safe in this period!!!
Apart from anything. Besides the excellent American classic drums. Every drum sings better under your hands. Love you Steve 🙏🏻♥️
So, so good! Some REAL musical drumming, and that includes the double kick work.
S S Thanks so much!
I had this kit but with the 2 toms on the stand between the bass drums.
Great story! Fellow drummer here. Nice chops, and great sounding kit,w/a snare to die for! I'd KILL for a Slingerland Magnum kit w the Cannon Toms going down to all the lower end Concert Toms, but God only knows if those kits still exist.
Wow, that set really sounds good, especially the snare. You did good, too. Poplar is a cheaper wood but yet it still makes drums sound good.
The two toms above the floor toms are mostly eye candy?
Steve I had chrome over wood Slingerland drums. My kit were concert toms 2 22x14 10 12 13 14 15 16 18..I would have loved to have had 3 toms across the front 10 12 13 or 12 13 13...If you ever have anything like this for sale let me know!...My all time favourite kit from my youth. Nice. I have 5/8 of that kit in black chrome.
Wonderful
Go Steve! Happy for you!
Those sound awsome, great tone and the snare is especially nice with a great crack and sensitivity, I'd be interested to know how thick the chrome 'wrap' is?
Love the story!
Steve, you are awesome!
Looks and sounds great!
Always been a slingerland fan Steve, can't wait to see what DW does with the brand, bet they will be amazing.
Who said you can never go back home? 🤔 Beautiful!! ☺️ 🎶
Nice playing !!!
Neal Smith from Alice Cooper just sold his giant COW a few months ago.
Could be part of it. To bad the heads didn't give a clue.

jeff wetmore Thanks Jeff! Yep, I didn’t care how heavy the gear was back then!!
@@stevemaxwelldrums lol, same here! Now it's all about light weight!
Man! That kit sings!!! Neal Smith from The Alice Cooper Band had one like that on steroids. So cool.
Wow
Looks a lot like Neil Peart’s first chromy Slingerland kit in the
Fly by Night video 👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the video and great story! Always refreshing to hear such beautiful playing on equally beautiful drums. Musical, tasty and all around pleasing!
I was wondering if the c.o.w. Slingerland drums are much heavier than a similar configuration with a plastic wrap.
Thanks again Steve!🥁👍👏
Question for Steve :It's 2023 and DW has been sold , do you think there will ever be a Slingerland reissue?
Sounds great! Tuned so high. I have an early 70s Slingerland but I keep it tuned medium and muffled for more of a 70s rock vibe. I have to try a jazz tuning. Do you have the internal mufflers engaged?
Grand sound , youngish squire !
Love your playing and also the sound of those drums. I have a Slingerland set myself.
I’v seen cubby from the Mickey Mouse club had a green sparkle ❇️ slingerland kit similar to that kit
Good for you Steve! Besides the radio king shells do you think the new Slingerlands will feature these type shells as well?
Matthew Paluch Hi Matt. I haven’t spoken to anyone at DW about Slingerland kit ideas yet, and with Covid priorities are different as well all know. But, these are wonderful shells!
Close to Neil Peart's "Chromey."
I see Steve got some 'hot face' in there.
the_ultimate_chris Had to concentrate hard with all those drums there!!! 😄
Also black chrome.
It was called " BLAKROME "
I've already put in a request 4a
Radio King snare drum in that finish!
Great Kit and Story. Thanks for sharing...
