Beautiful. Thank you. I’m trying my first oil portrait of a young girl. With her little dog. I do pastel portraits of pets. Dogs etc. but trying a portrait in oils. This was very helpful
You're a very gifted painter, and this is a lovely painting. I already love your landscapes (I follow you on Instagram and mostly view there), and this is an excellent explanation of your approach to portraiture. I have never tried a portrait - I'm too scared - but when I do, I will definitely return to this video for help. Many thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you Medusa, that's very kind and encouraging 😊 yes portraits are very daunting and I believe they are the ultimate test for an artist- I struggled big time with this one, believe me. The best advice I would have for you as someone who hasn't tried a portrait before is to learn the basics of proportion- so you can achieve a decent likeness, as without this, no amount of rendering will change whether it looks like the person or not. Once you've got that part down, then you can begin to look at values as you would with a landscape. But just go for it- I think the key to success is throwing yourself off the deep end and making a mess but then looking carefully at what you've done right and done wrong and correcting from there. And doing that over and over again 🙂
@@danielorourkeartist Thank you for this further advice. Considering your advice, I guess that pencil sketching faces to quickly become more familar with the basics of proportion would be a good idea? And, yes, somewhere in amongst all I think about improving as a painter, I know that just diving in and making a mess is best. It takes a while to get used to the idea that failure is an essential part of progress, and not every painting has to be a masterpiece. Thank you, all the very best.
Well done! A good breakdown of the process… I like the way you’ve detailed the color mixing part. I’ll try this mix method on a painting I have in mind. Cheers! 👍🏼
You're welcome 😁 I really like the dark mix because you can push it cooler with blue and warmer with crimson or burnt sienna- and it is pretty transparent as well if you work some medium into it. All the best with your painting 😊
Your prescious little daughter is so beautiful. I love watching your incredible painting video. I know that the darks are usually layer in first, but watching you demo shows me how much more I need to learn. I have a problem seeing the same thing that you are seeing, especially when it comes to the colors. I am color-blind, with the problems being in the red/green range. I have survived teaching public school art for 31 years through my knowledge of the grey-scales and their relations to the values of colors. I usually need some help from my artist gallery friend, and making a lot of notes. I am truly amazed at your system. Thank you for sharing it. I am also 30 years, ret., and disabled from the military, thank you so much, MSG Leum
Hi MSG Leum, thanks for writing 😊 That must be a challenge, being colour blind, but sounds like you've worked your way around it and managed to teach as well! In terms of getting the darks layered in, I find that squinting at the subject really helps a lot so all that information is made simpler and easier to see. Otherwise I find it too daunting a task if I start to look at all the details straight away. I'm very happy this video helped you. Just let me know if you have any other questions, I'll be happy to try and answer them 🙂 All the best, Daniel
Merci beaucoup Didier 😊 I'm glad you got something out of it and good luck with your own portrait, it can be tough sometimes but keep going! Just let me know if I can help further. All the best, Daniel

Daniel, thanks for sharing your process. Great demo and description. Do you blend the background into the hair or just leave it as is? Great job. Congratulations and I wish you all the best for 2023. Blessings and take care. Greetings from Champaign, Illinois, USA New subscriber.
Hi again Crisalida 😊 As with the flower, I add sharper edges where the high contrasts are, like where the light falls on her hair and allow the rest of the hair to merge into the background, that way you get a feeling that the person is 'in' the background and not sitting on top of it 😊 All the best to you too and thanks for subscribing
Ok, you are the real deal. Wow!!! Very nice classical technique!
Thank you! 😊
