@Super Man Ha! Clever... I'll remember that one for my family get-togethers this Christmas. As a baptized Syrian Orthodox raised in an Anabaptist Church who learned a lot from the UMC, converted to Roman Catholicism (oopsie), and finally went to my rightful place as an Easten Catholic (it's complicated), maybe I can shed some light here. Many of the EO and EC services look very similar to each other, especially "big" services, like weddings. My husband could become a priest if he felt called to do so, we don't include the filioque in our Nicene Creed, we have a different liturgical calendar, etc. The primary difference that I've noticed is that the Eastern Mass is like Heaven on Earth, where we lose track of time. The Roman Masses are more like Protestant services - there is a lot of time spent watching what other people (like the priest and lay ministers) are doing, whereas the Eastern Mass is fully participatory. EO have different standards for the canonization of Saints than the RCC has. For example, the EO Church recognizes St Job, St Noah, etc. I wonder where the EC Church stands on this. Hopefully, we are in communion with the EO Churches on this one, but I admit I've never seen an Old Testament Saint Icon in our churches... so probably not. Anyway, I think my EO family will get a kick out of this EO/EC/RCC meme... Peace of Christ be with you!

There are lots of Mennonites in my area of the Ozarks and by far they are hard working, honest people. I've hired them often for jobs on my farm and I've never been disappointed in their work ethic. I'm Roman Catholic and we have had more than a few light hearted discussions about churches. I have a huge respect for them.
Good stuff as always. One of the fun things that makes Mennonites different in their assigning or ordination of ministers is that (some) Mennonite churches use the casting of lots to select a minister when there is an opening. It's not been unheard of for an Anabaptist man to flee one area as a way to avoid being drafted into that role.
I live in an area that is overwhelmingly Methodist. My family was Methodist from the 1880's to the 1950's. The Methodists in my area were so low-church that not only did they not practice infant baptism, but they'd never even HEARD of the practice! I remember when a Catholic family we knew had a baby in the late 1960's and they were talking about having her baptised. My entire family was just like WHAT?!?!

There's so much variety within the CofE. My church has a service at 9.30 that is very liturgical and high church like. Immediately after there's a family service which is the most popular one that is very low church and relaxed. We denominated ourself an evangelical protestant church. I love it. 🙂

I haven't watched all of your videos, but the fact that I can't even guess what denomination you affiliate with is telling of your unbias in comparing and contrasting these different denominations. I recently read an article about Mennonites written by Malcolm Gladwell. He noted an often unknown practice among Mennonites the lack of using honorific titles for people, whether in the church or in the world. The article said they call people either by their first name or brother/sister. I have a very good friend who’s mother was raised a Mennonite. She dresses very plainly so I’m assuming she was raised conservative.

We are all in full communion under the authority of the Pope. If you would like to know more, let me know, and I can answer further questions or provide you with references. Thanks for your understanding in this matter. If you are interested in sub-communities within Catholicism, perhaps looking into distinct religious orders might be interesting. I should just caution you though that they still aren't denominations. There is no such thing as denominations within the Catholic Church.

The 'Anglican Church' was not just the Catholic Church in England - the Catholic Church in England and Wales, like that in Ireland and Scotland, was .. erm .. the Catholic Church (in communion with God's beloved called to be saints at Rome, but - at times - in or out of favour with the Bishop of Rome; it happens, it's about personalities, politics and even principles, e.g. the Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy by the French monarchs). A very specific political act of Supremacy, that of the English monarch over the Church in his lands, set up the Church of England by order of parliament - as distinct from the Roman Church; however, his break was with the Roman Pontiff, and his target the symbols of Rome's claim to jurisdictional superiority .. not the Catholic belief system itself, cf The Six Articles. The main effort to destroy Catholicism, yes - destroy it, in England came with the ascendancy of Edward VI's more Puritan Protestant advisers, The Forty-Two Articles. The Elizabethan settlement re-affirmed this degree of separation from Rome and Catholicism. Thus the Church of England's claims to direct Apostolic Succession were deemed broken (by Rome, New Rome, and Third Rome) - though use was made of some remaining pre-1530 bishops, the ordination of the new candidates, per se, was no longer considered a divine sacrament but only a parliament-approved ordinance for the Church, that is, the Anglican bishops had freely and publicly divested themselves of their priestly ordination (sacerdotal and sacrificial) as sacrament thus their rites of ordination were themselves not sacraments (commonly called sacraments, yes, but not of the Gospel). So now elevating bishops from among these non-sacramental priests would mean that they were not actual bishops in the apostolic line (for only a sacramentally ordained priest can hold episcopal office*; non-ordained candidates selected for that office, even the Bishop of Rome, would be hurried through the clerical stages to ordination); the Scandanavian episcopate, though compromised in their rite of ordination, do provide an interesting insight - they did not repudiate their sacramental sacredotal ordination, only accepting a demanded change in the order used, away from its sacrificial aspect and Romish adherence. I don't think you understood his statement. He was saying that before the Anglican Church was instituted that the church of England was the Catholic Church in England.
My personal experience within the Church of England has been that most people view communion as purely symbolic, my local Anglican church is strongly Anglo Catholic and they make it very clear on their website that they believe in real presence, however in the broader local Anglican community that church is viewed as being uncomfortably Catholic.
It's unfortunate that lay people have this view, as it's explicitly rejected in the articles and incompatible with the language of the BCP. The Low end of the spectrum would be receptionism, or "spiritual presence," but pure symbolism was ruled out from the start.
A lot of larger Church of England congregations, especially those in and around cities, use a contemporary worship style. This is the case with most evangelical Church of England churches, whether conservative or charismatic, which are also often the bigger churches.

For British Quakers, silent Meetings are the norm with no programming and singing is not something that happens very often. The same is true in Ireland most of Europe and amongst more traditional North American Yearly Meetings. We don't have ordained clergy but we do have Elders and Overseers who form Committees in each Meeting. We are seeking a new term for the latter as the term has unfortunate overtones. Members of both Committees would serve for a maximum of two consecutive three-year turns. Elders have responsibility for maintaining the Spiritual life of the Meeting; Overseers the pastoral needs of Friends. The terms are taken from the Geneva Bible (the Puritan translation that James the I & VI disliked so much he commissioned the Authorised Translation). The original Greek is "presbyteros" and "Episkopos"; the equivalent of priest and bishop in the Anglican tradition. Clearly, these roles are very different from hierarchical religious groups. The spontaneous Ministry of Friends gathered in worship central rather than preplanned sermons, prayers, or readings from religious texts.
As a cradle CofE and now Methodist, I’m not sure this accurately reflects Anglicanism. There is probably more diversity in worship in the Anglican Communion than in the Methodist Church. You have huge “low church” and highly influential churches like HTB, All Souls, St Helens Bishopsgate that are not remotely liturgical and where the clergy don’t even wear dog collars. Most “low church” Anglicans recognize and understand a conversion experience and have whole mission agencies based on this understanding.

It’s interesting that in global Anglican terms, the Episcopal Church is not a main player - other than financially. The big churches are those in Nigeria, Uganda, and Singapore. All of which are conservative, pretty low church (praise bands etc), and very Protestant. In fact the largest Anglican churches in the Anglo-sphere, such as Holy Trinity Brompton and All Souls in London and Sydney Cathedral are the same.
I am a part of a house church it's almost like the baptist except we meet anywhere any day and time were still protestant but we do things a bit differently we still hold to belivers baptism
The original Protestant denominations from the 1500's are all offshoots of the Catholic church; other Protestant denominations are offshoots of earlier Protestant denominations.

I have started to view Christianity as Linux, and all of its branches as distro. Why cant we have a single distro that solves all of our problems? Lets make a new distro, and hence a new church is born.
Yes, but then you'd have the "distro" church alongside all the other existing churches. Instead of solving the problem, you'd just contribute to it a little more by adding one more denomination.
From a theological point of view, differences occur mostly because people dont take scripture seriously enough. Once you start editing, you wont stop until there is nothing left. From a programming point of view, spot on. I dont know Linux, but as web development pushes out desktop applications, we are cursed to work with the abomination that is javascript, a 30 year old hack that is well past its experation date. And each new developer that want to "solve" the problem by writting a new framework on top of it, only makes the problem worse, because no matter what you do, the foundation of your castle remain sand.

What are you doing? Is your purpose to cause dissention? The only thing Christians are supposed to be doing for non-believers is to tell them the good news that Jesus died on the cross for their sins.
If you are referring to the political movement then no, through obviously that can't stop them from referring to themselves as such, but then the polygamy practising cultlike Mormon offshoots also refer to themselves as such. If you are a person struggling with the burden of a particular form of the sin of Lust then you could certainly be a Christian, and we should pray for those who do because it's an unenviable road to travel. However it is practice that makes a Christian not self-identification.

Most Christian denominations believe they are bound for Heaven and all the others, as well as all non-Christians, are doomed to hell. Funny thing, but I don't believe that's what Jesus had in mind.
That's actually incorrect. There are actually a bunch of denominations that agree but are only different due to geographical differences. Also, you are totally wrong about most denominations believing the others are going to hell. It's a minority that would hold that position. Most denominations do not teach that other denominations are going to hell simply for being a different denomination or believing differently. So your whole comment proves to be quite uneducated.
No this is wrong. No religious studies scholar with even a small knowledge of Denominations would make such a statement (as you made about hell). Very few Catholic and Orthodox have a literal stance on "No salvation outside the catholic church" dogma. They believe the church has a divine and a human part (Just like Christ) and that people can not be part of the physical church and still receive salvation. There are very few protestant sects that believe all others are going to hell, these are typically characterized as cults and make up a small percentage of christian demographics worldwide (maybe 1 or two percent). No one in this video would ever say they are the one true church (These are all protestant churches no mainline protestant or generally otherwise believes this.). Though I know of a small cult that has holiness roots that believes this.
People make new denominations because they - want gay marriage - want women pastors - don't want infant baptism - don't like organs in service - want to be woke - want to be divorced from their wife for no good reason (Anglican church) - don't like vestments - don't like bishops None of these reasons are valid. However if your church wants to do that, and you want to keep going to a church that does not leave biblical ground, starting an uncorrected version of your church is the biblical view. Or you just go back to the reformation and become confessional Lutheran
Why stop at Luther, medieval Catholics had a good thing going and were perhaps the best at integrating Christian teachings to everyday life, they also managed one of the longest periods of the church not imploding into a thousand flavours of heresies.

If you are interested in sub-communities within Catholicism, perhaps looking into distinct religious orders might be interesting. I should just caution you though that they still aren't denominations. There is no such thing as denominations within the Catholic Church.

The 'Anglican Church' was not just the Catholic Church in England - the Catholic Church in England and Wales, like that in Ireland and Scotland, was .. erm .. the Catholic Church (in communion with God's beloved called to be saints at Rome, but - at times - in or out of favour with the Bishop of Rome; it happens, it's about personalities, politics and even principles, e.g. the Babylonian Captivity of the Papacy by the French monarchs). A very specific political act of Supremacy, that of the English monarch over the Church in his lands, set up the Church of England by order of parliament - as distinct from the Roman Church; however, his break was with the Roman Pontiff, and his target the symbols of Rome's claim to jurisdictional superiority .. not the Catholic belief system itself, cf The Six Articles. The main effort to destroy Catholicism, yes - destroy it, in England came with the ascendancy of Edward VI's more Puritan Protestant advisers, The Forty-Two Articles.
The Elizabethan settlement re-affirmed this degree of separation from Rome and Catholicism. Thus the Church of England's claims to direct Apostolic Succession were deemed broken (by Rome, New Rome, and Third Rome) - though use was made of some remaining pre-1530 bishops, the ordination of the new candidates, per se, was no longer considered a divine sacrament but only a parliament-approved ordinance for the Church, that is, the Anglican bishops had freely and publicly divested themselves of their priestly ordination (sacerdotal and sacrificial) as sacrament thus their rites of ordination were themselves not sacraments (commonly called sacraments, yes, but not of the Gospel). So now elevating bishops from among these non-sacramental priests would mean that they were not actual bishops in the apostolic line (for only a sacramentally ordained priest can hold episcopal office*; non-ordained candidates selected for that office, even the Bishop of Rome, would be hurried through the clerical stages to ordination); the Scandanavian episcopate, though compromised in their rite of ordination, do provide an interesting insight - they did not repudiate their sacramental sacredotal ordination, only accepting a demanded change in the order used, away from its sacrificial aspect and Romish adherence.
Consecration of Anglican bishops by Old Catholic bishops, then still retaining the Apostolic Succession, though separated from Roman jurisdiction, was engaged with - but the ensuing difficulty with non-sacramental ordination remained for the Anglicans. And the Old Catholics themselves have long since set aside sacramental validity, ordaining women and consecrating them as bishops - breaking their link of Apostolic Succession (.. from Rome).

I don't think you understood his statement. He was saying that before the Anglican Church was instituted that the church of England was the Catholic Church in England.

My personal experience within the Church of England has been that most people view communion as purely symbolic, my local Anglican church is strongly Anglo Catholic and they make it very clear on their website that they believe in real presence, however in the broader local Anglican community that church is viewed as being uncomfortably Catholic.
It's unfortunate that lay people have this view, as it's explicitly rejected in the articles and incompatible with the language of the BCP. The Low end of the spectrum would be receptionism, or "spiritual presence," but pure symbolism was ruled out from the start.
Interesting. I am Episcopalian, and most people in my parish believe in Real Presence. It is taught during confirmation/reception classes, too.

A lot of larger Church of England congregations, especially those in and around cities, use a contemporary worship style. This is the case with most evangelical Church of England churches, whether conservative or charismatic, which are also often the bigger churches.

For British Quakers, silent Meetings are the norm with no programming and singing is not something that happens very often. The same is true in Ireland most of Europe and amongst more traditional North American Yearly Meetings.
We don't have ordained clergy but we do have Elders and Overseers who form Committees in each Meeting. We are seeking a new term for the latter as the term has unfortunate overtones. Members of both Committees would serve for a maximum of two consecutive three-year turns. Elders have responsibility for maintaining the Spiritual life of the Meeting; Overseers the pastoral needs of Friends. The terms are taken from the Geneva Bible (the Puritan translation that James the I & VI disliked so much he commissioned the Authorised Translation). The original Greek is "presbyteros" and "Episkopos"; the equivalent of priest and bishop in the Anglican tradition. Clearly, these roles are very different from hierarchical religious groups. The spontaneous Ministry of Friends gathered in worship central rather than preplanned sermons, prayers, or readings from religious texts.

As a cradle CofE and now Methodist, I’m not sure this accurately reflects Anglicanism. There is probably more diversity in worship in the Anglican Communion than in the Methodist Church. You have huge “low church” and highly influential churches like HTB, All Souls, St Helens Bishopsgate that are not remotely liturgical and where the clergy don’t even wear dog collars. Most “low church” Anglicans recognize and understand a conversion experience and have whole mission agencies based on this understanding.

It’s interesting that in global Anglican terms, the Episcopal Church is not a main player - other than financially. The big churches are those in Nigeria, Uganda, and Singapore. All of which are conservative, pretty low church (praise bands etc), and very Protestant. In fact the largest Anglican churches in the Anglo-sphere, such as Holy Trinity Brompton and All Souls in London and Sydney Cathedral are the same.
But by and large, the rest of Australia is much more varied, but predominantly middle to high church.
That of course meant Australian Anglicanism.
The church in Nigeria is definitely not low church
I am a part of a house church it's almost like the baptist except we meet anywhere any day and time were still protestant but we do things a bit differently we still hold to belivers baptism

All the Protestant churches of the 16th century are protesting (hence the name) against their former church, Catholicism, yes.
The original Protestant denominations from the 1500's are all offshoots of the Catholic church; other Protestant denominations are offshoots of earlier Protestant denominations.
Henry the 8th founded the Church of England. The pope wouldn't grant him a divorce from Ann Bolyen, so there it is.

I'm curious how the Mennonite and Quaker churches interpret Jesus' statement in Luke 22:36 -- "...he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one" vis-a-vis self-defence.
As a quaker I interpreted in the contest of Jesus wanting to fullfil the phrophesies as two sword (said to be enough) could not possibly have been "enough" to defend Jesus but enough to be accused of been a common criminal. Furthermore hes chstices Peter for cuting the soldiers ear with one of them

Many commentators have interpreted verse 38 ("It is enough") to refer to Jesus' firm ending of this kind of talk, rather than referring to the number of swords.
The chastisement of Peter was to show that Jesus was willing, indeed knew it was necessary, for Him to be arrested and killed. That is why He says, "Permit even this."
Jesus' words "all who take the sword will perish by the sword" (Matthew 26:52) refers to those who impulsively live by violence (as Peter was being impulsive here, not reflecting on this was Jesus' spoken plan from the beginning). It in no way prohibits a person from defending themselves from assault by man or beast.
Mennonites hold the view of non- resistance (which is different from pacifism) very highly. It’s one of the main doctrines of their church.

I have started to view Christianity as Linux, and all of its branches as distro. Why cant we have a single distro that solves all of our problems? Lets make a new distro, and hence a new church is born.

Yes, but then you'd have the "distro" church alongside all the other existing churches. Instead of solving the problem, you'd just contribute to it a little more by adding one more denomination.
From a theological point of view, differences occur mostly because people dont take scripture seriously enough. Once you start editing, you wont stop until there is nothing left.
From a programming point of view, spot on. I dont know Linux, but as web development pushes out desktop applications, we are cursed to work with the abomination that is javascript, a 30 year old hack that is well past its experation date. And each new developer that want to "solve" the problem by writting a new framework on top of it, only makes the problem worse, because no matter what you do, the foundation of your castle remain sand.
A lot of the protestant denominations ironically take an 'interpretive' view of scripture.

Salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is by baptismal regeneration and is maintained through the Catholic sacraments unless a willful act of sin is committed that breaks the state of sanctifying grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace which is received through simple faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are the result of a change of the heart wrought in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17) and the fruit of that new life in Christ (John 15).
Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation cannot be guaranteed or assured. 1 John 5:13 states that the letter of 1 John was written for the purpose of assuring believers of the CERTAINTY of their salvation.
Good Works: The Roman Catholic Church states that Christians are saved by meritorious works (beginning with baptism) and that salvation is maintained by good works (receiving the sacraments, confession of sin to a priest, etc.) The Bible states that Christians are saved by grace through faith, totally apart from works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 3:10-11; Romans 3:19-24).

If you are referring to the political movement then no, through obviously that can't stop them from referring to themselves as such, but then the polygamy practising cultlike Mormon offshoots also refer to themselves as such.
If you are a person struggling with the burden of a particular form of the sin of Lust then you could certainly be a Christian, and we should pray for those who do because it's an unenviable road to travel. However it is practice that makes a Christian not self-identification.

Most Christian denominations believe they are bound for Heaven and all the others, as well as all non-Christians, are doomed to hell. Funny thing, but I don't believe that's what Jesus had in mind.
That's actually incorrect. There are actually a bunch of denominations that agree but are only different due to geographical differences. Also, you are totally wrong about most denominations believing the others are going to hell. It's a minority that would hold that position. Most denominations do not teach that other denominations are going to hell simply for being a different denomination or believing differently. So your whole comment proves to be quite uneducated.

No this is wrong. No religious studies scholar with even a small knowledge of Denominations would make such a statement (as you made about hell). Very few Catholic and Orthodox have a literal stance on "No salvation outside the catholic church" dogma. They believe the church has a divine and a human part (Just like Christ) and that people can not be part of the physical church and still receive salvation. There are very few protestant sects that believe all others are going to hell, these are typically characterized as cults and make up a small percentage of christian demographics worldwide (maybe 1 or two percent).
No one in this video would ever say they are the one true church (These are all protestant churches no mainline protestant or generally otherwise believes this.). Though I know of a small cult that has holiness roots that believes this.
People make new denominations because they
- want gay marriage
- want women pastors
- don't want infant baptism
- don't like organs in service
- want to be woke
- want to be divorced from their wife for no good reason (Anglican church)
- don't like vestments
- don't like bishops
None of these reasons are valid. However if your church wants to do that, and you want to keep going to a church that does not leave biblical ground, starting an uncorrected version of your church is the biblical view. Or you just go back to the reformation and become confessional Lutheran
Why stop at Luther, medieval Catholics had a good thing going and were perhaps the best at integrating Christian teachings to everyday life, they also managed one of the longest periods of the church not imploding into a thousand flavours of heresies.
