- In this video I show you how to create a cool dodge and burn effect really quickly with Capture One Pro.

I must tell you Scott... I try to absorb all the video tutorial information I can find on Capture One and I find your "straight-to-the-point" tutorials the very best! I do try to get to the point as I really find videos where you have to wait ten minutes for them to get to the part you want really frustrating. It is difficult to explain in enough detail for beginners but also not bore more experienced viewers. In the end I would rather have the balance on the side of the beginner because they need it more.

This was a great tutorial. I gave it a try and my attempt was awful but I could definitely see what it was trying to accomplish. I'm brand new to Capture One (and to any real photo editing software, for that matter) so I'm not bothered by the reality I don't have the skill to do this properly yet. I'll be coming back to this tutorial often as I continue to learn and improve.

Thank you Steve. Even if you only use it as a guide is is quite useful. And sometimes it will be all you need to do.
Quite different to how I usually use dodge/burn in Photoshop. In this example, it creates contour and contrast to the face, whereas when I use dodge/burn, it is to smooth out transitions in the skin tones. So the darker areas are dodged and lighter areas burned.
This is applied using a mask for the whole image on separate layers - and your method is my final step to do contouring.

Perfect tutorial thanks. Can you tell me how to work my Fuji Raf without the film simulation? they always opens with the film setting I used to take the shoot.
Thank you very much. On the colour tab, within the base characteristics tool you can change the curve to whatever you want. If you click the three dots at the top right of the tool you can set as the default for your camera when you import. Hope that helps.

Cheers Francesco. Yes it is possible to isolate the skin colour with a selection. But you would still have to clean up the selection with mask editing. In a case like this I find it faster to do it the way I have in the video.
Amazing technique. But what is the difference of a dodge and burn compared to general contrast through curves/levels? Any pointers that would be great.
You could get a similar effect with curves. But controlling the curve to get sharp changes would be difficult because the curve has it's own way of bending when you add and move points. The levels control is very blunt. You can't adjust a specified range. The luma range control allows you very to easily set a range and feathering.

Killer video. This is a great use of luminosity masks but the video and the little tips demonstrated here spell it out. Do you have any advice on the best way to save some of these settings as presets?
You can save layer attributes as presets. That could help.
@@ScottWilliamsPhotography Thanks Scott. I have been just started working more with the presets and preset layers. I bought some presets when I upgraded to 20. Bryan Minear Infinite Peaks gets a lot of use as does the John Schell Pacific pack.

You are very welcome Cherine. You would really have to process them one by one as the mask and lighting would probably be different in each image.
If you use a Mac, you can use a script to create the layers in Capture One and then adjust them as needed

Thank you Mauro. When using the brush tool with a tablet I hold down space on the keyboard to show the hand tool. You can then pan with the pen and double tap the pen on the tablet to zoom. Hope this helps.
Why would you prefer Brightness to Exposure? Pro vs. Con? Thank you for your method!
Good question. I tend to use the brightness slider for this type of thing as it doesn't blow out the image. The exposure slider will send the midtones into the whites when pushed. While with the brightness slider it is more controlled. When I'm developing my raw images I always try to bring up/down the exposure until the mid tones are in the middle of the histogram and then I use the brightness slider to lighten or darken the image.

This question confuses many people. The easiest way to explain the difference between exposure and brightness/luminosity/vibrancy is Exposure adjusts are global. They will affect the entire image from edge to edge. Brightness/luminosity/vibrancy only affect the exposure/colour/saturation values in the mid tones. When you read the photographers reply, it makes a lot of sense. Adjust your exposure to get as much info into the mid range/tone of your images histogram, then you can leave the exposure alone. After that use the supporting tools in brightness/vibrancy etc (Some editors may have different names for the tools, but they perform the same task) to make further refining or stylistic adjustments without heavy-handedly affecting the overall exposure.

You are welcome. You could try to use curves to do this but you would find it tricky to get the same effect using the control points. This method is a flexible shortcut. Also by using the layers and luma ranges you could incorporate more into the dodge and burn such as saturation and colour shift.

You could try using the clone tool to fill in the over exposed section with other parts of the skin.
quick question... is there an advantage to primarily using the brightness slider to dodge and burn over lowering or raising points in curves? Or does it virtually do the same thing? does curves offer more flexibility in having separate rgb color channels?
You could use curves but from experience I have found that the results are not quite the same. It is harder to shape the curves exactly in the same way because they have a mind of their own. It is just quicker and for me I have more control with this method. It is also cool to be able to use other adjustments with the luma range such as clarity or colour etc.
There is a big A (for auto adjustments ) top left ; is it recommendable to use it ?
It can't hurt. When I first started I used to auto adjust all of my images on import. But I found myself editing them anyway. As it is the best guess by the program to make a nice image for you, it doesn't always get it right. I personally don't use the auto adjustments at all anymore . They sometimes give good results but with practice you will find yourself consistently making a much better job of it.
