Moving from Open XR to Steam link will have another benefit because I can use the new Reality Mixer app for mixed reality. It doesn’t work with Open XR at this time. Off to experiment now!!!
Hey man, great video. I have had a Reverb G2 since it came out, and I just bought a Quest 3 a week ago. I'd be really interested to see a full comparison video, I'm on the fence about selling the G2 now. G2 looks a little more crisp and better colors but Quest 3 has better fov and controllers. Not to mention WMR is losing support in 2026. Is there any advantage to using a wired setup with the Quest 3 or using virtual desktop?
Really impressed with it so far. Question though does it make occulus tray tool redundant or will that still have an influence? Many thanks

Oh I very much enjoy the Q3, returned the crystal. Not worth the price to my VR enjoyment ratio...Crystal is better than Q3 in the visual department but both are not 4K resolution even the crystal. Will save for the next big thing which is the Aero (new one). Im ok with the Q3, VDXR combo for now.

Always so nice to see your smooth running system 😊 I have an off-topic question: I just switch from the oculus app to virtual desktop. The overall image looks crispy clear, but there’s a very fast frequency effect in the image like an old tube lamp not to be confused with flickering that’s not what it is I need some direction to find the cause and solution? It’s hurting my eyes and brains. 😅
That sounds like you have Synchronous Space Warp (SSW) and/or Snapdragon Game Super Resolution enabled. Those two can introduce visual artefacts like you're describing.
60Hz in VD was the cause 🙋♂️

So you are just starting the STEAM Link on the Quest 3 and then start on the STEAM SCREEN Button the simulation? I am still don't understand how to start the MSFS2020 with the Quest 3 directly....
@@pascal-antoinducardus5074 I have Q2. Had trouble to then found out. You have to go into steam vr settings without your vr headset connected. and set the default open XL settings to steam VR, as they will be on oculus still.
VD is still the best in my opinion for msfs2020 Slink is just not as crisp, and i have it on max settings running a i9 RTX4080 16GB card. and SSD hard drives
Is there any option to use av1 codec casue i have a 4080 and dont have plan to buy a router is there anyway that i can use av1 with my quest 3 with link cable
I find the AV1 codec to be not as sharp and clear as using H264+. AV1 doesn’t have as high a bitrate as H264+ and I believe that’s where most of that issue arises from
I need help on mine cause I’m not getting any of this on my 13900k oc 5.8, 4080 super and 32gb ddr5. I’m getting 37 fps and crap textures. I can’t figure it out.

I was getting 22 fps in steam vr. Switched it to openxr runtime in oculus app and got 35-40.

You can play Oculus games with Steam Link as well. I tried Asgards Wrath and it ran better than Air Link and VD. VDXR only gave me issues with modded games, but modded work well with Steam Link

I am absolutely loving the reliability of VDXR and the much needed FPS increases it has given me with my 3080 but i really miss the ability to pin desktops/applications within the VR environment which oculus and steamVR has. Does anybody know if steam link provides this functionality?
If only VDXR provided access to the desktop in vr!...
@Glider324 but it does, lol. The name of the app is Virtual Desktop. Usually, if you double-click on the left oculus button, it should take you to the desktop.
@MegaIronica I'm on about the ability to bring an application like discord into your game as a pinned screen. Virtual Desktop using VDXR doesn't support this yet, which is why I'm interested in whether this new steam link app can

Don't know why but steam link and MSFS has black flashes,and judders where as VD and XDR is buttery smooth and crystal clear?
Motion smoothing / ASW is not an option now. Thats my one wish! Super good experience tho as is

I don't understand how you consider this a super good experience with the fixed foveated encoding. Honestly don't get it.
@theegodelpozo well.... I play DCS world in VR with a 3080. In busy and populated areas my frames can drop below 36 fps. I use foveated rendering on OpenXR toolkit to squeeze out more FPS which helps. So no change from toolkit to steam link. ASW helps a lot with keeping my FPS stable when the frames drop and creates a stutter freeze experience.
Side note - the Quest 3 uses foveated rendering in most games anyway if you look close enough.
@@proxlamuz4591 the community is getting crazy about this foveated encoding but just a couple of RUclipsrs talk about it. Just Google "steam link foveated encoding" . It's very noticeable. Very.
@@proxlamuz4591 btw I use virtual desktop. I have a 7800x3d + 4090 sim rig and I get similar or better results (thanks asw and override resolution) without the foveated encoding. I know it performs better maybe but the sweet spot is ridiculously small for pancake lens.
The Quest 3 is worthy enough of retiring my G2 v2. I can’t see any reason to go back to the G2 when the Q3 can do everything every bit as well and do it from a cable or wirelessly. VD or Oculus Link. RIP G2
I agree, but the comfort issue with the Q3 is scaring me a bit. I'm sure ill come up with something though, I had to adapt the G2 by taking the face plate off and attaching Velcro stickers to a face gasket. I think they called it the "Frankenfov"

Artifacts and compression is what keeps me going back to my G2. If you are bothered by the visual downgrade there aren't many dedicated PCVR headsets at the $500 price.
@@bigmakbm1 are the issues with comprimations and artifacts also very noticeable still with the 4090 and high end CPU and wifi?
@@Torcsen Most definitely they are still there, especially if you notice them it is hard to not see them - like having a bad pixel on your monitor. That being said I have a 7900XTX so I haven't tried the newest codec that seems to be Nvidia only.

did you ever get use to that bigscreen beyond glare? it’s pretty bad feels like screen is smudged but its not and seems like $200 restocking fee to return…that so far no RUclipsr i heard ever mention…

I probably got this wrong and I couldn't find where to change the settings specifically for Steam Link but when I tried this with the Quest 3, it seemed to use an agressive fixed foveated render which make MSFS look more like the G2 than the Quest 3....
Nice one @@tyler_clarity however I've tried moving the encoding to the right 1344px and it's the same. If you display the game board in Steam Home with pretty much 80% of your entire vision, you can clearly see the text on the outer columns blurry and it's the same in MSFS. Maybe I'm doiing something wrong.
@@dtrjones if anyone has the answer to this i would like to know because im actually having the same problem although when i set it to 1344px it actually does reduce in diameter but its still there its kind of annoying at first i thought i was having blind spots in my vision haha
@@tyler_claritynothing turns the foveated ENCODING off.. it's unusable. Just use the virtual desktop "override resolution" option and you'll get the same visuals.

Your question makes no sense. Quest 2 is a VR headset. Virtual Desktop is a program.

dont want to be that guy but blue light filters seem to be almost useless, it's the overall brightness that counts.
and even the lowest setting for all hmd is too bright and disrupts the circadian rhythm. At least that's what Andrew Huberman said in his podcast
I wished Virtual Desktop 😢 worked so well for me. I get all kinds issues…stuttering the biggest issue. Airlink for some reason has always worked better for me even with the bitrate cranked way up.
Have u got a fix for this I’ve just got my quest 3 and holy shit oculus link and steam link is unplayable on msfs it’s like freeze stuttering the whole time I cannot even look around

Unfortunately no fix…AirLink still works best for me. I’m literally within 6ft of $600 ASUS 6E router and AirLink is still the best. If that’s not working it say go with a pulley system and run a cable from your PC to the headset if you can. It’s still better for me than the expensive ass 6E router connection.
Well everything is amazing inside the tiny and annoying sweet spot that the Foveated encoding Steam Link offers. But the blur difference makes it unusable with the Quest 3. It's clearly designed for eye tracking devices (Q pro and possibly the Decard). So I believe that many many vr youtubers are skipping this huge issue. I don't know why because honestly is not acceptable in FS2020. I get the same visuals as this sweet spot using the "override resolution" feature in OpenXR toolkit (Virtual desktop) going to 5500 x 5xxx there. Same quality of that SLink sweet spot but all over the eyes.

You lost me at 1:20 about it being easy to setup. SteamLink cannot find my PC (which is running Steam), that's as far as I get. Back to Virtual Desktop for me.
It took me 30 seconds once I paired my PC 🤔
I had 0 issues, unless its your firewall, thats all I can think of at the moment. I did stop the VD service just incase it interfered
John: There might be one of Microsoft's typical nag messages asking if you really, really wish to do something.
That little windows sometimes hide in the background and prevent SteamLink from connecting..
Just in case, did you check that "Remote Play" was activated in Steam settings?
You have to have your router hooked up to internet.
I bought a Quest 3 used it for a few days and returned it. One thing people don't seem to mention is inside out tracking doesn't work so well with bass transducers and motion. Looks great in the headset till you start to have vibrations, then you get this horrible stutter in the headset. It's a shame as the Q3 does look great vs my old CV1.

That's a crazy comment since the Varjo XR4 which is designed for simulation as a use case has inside out tracking out of the box. Every headset I've ever owned, you have to give it a month otherwise you end up making snap decisions and things like this happen. Take for example there is a reddit post when a number of people returned the Quest 3 headset when it 'died' not knowing that the headset shuts down if it sees something potentially bad, you have to hold the volume rocker and power button for 30 seconds to start it again, happened to me just once though, so not a major issue.
