Ian, the Z500 is a great looking bike! With my 59th birthday approaching quickly, I would buy a small adventure bike. The ergonomics and commuter friendliness of the adventure bike is more practical for my style of riding. (Full disclosure, I've been riding my CRF300L Rally for the past 2+years, just want something with a little more power).
Been wanting the kawa klx 300 sm or something close in this size. The price is nearly the same as the z 500, which is bonkers. You get more for the $ with z 500. I haven't decided but im looking something small & lighter....yet NOT grom small. I have to be able to "pop" onto the interstate for a few exits in my city for example. I'm pretty sure, after watching this in-depth review that I will be happier in the long run with the z 500.
I bought an outgoing 2023 z400. I'm 70 years old, pretty much a "noobie" in the parlance of the motorcycle world, and the deciding factor for me is the weight of the bike, the lighter the better.
I'm 64, in good shape, 79 kg, 1,79 tall. Just got a NX500 and have to admit that sometimes I'm having slight difficulties and look like a beginner, even though I've ridden all kinds of bikes for 40 years. Maybe it's the 19" front wheel or the 17 L of fuel high up. My '17 NC750S didn't feel that awkward, maybe I'm getting old. Of course, the weight down low and the automatic help. :)
@@PrimoStracciatella I have a CB500X 2023 I love the bike but I struggle with the weight (and my own length.) Driving is great but moving it around is no fun. Maybe I should try the Cb500F or the Z500 but I am not sure yet what I should do.
Me to . I've ridden all kinda of bikes since 1972. From Elsinore to Moto Guzzi. Kawasaki only shows off their engineers since this is their smallest division. They will not lay down and take 2nd place. They give far more "freebies for bucks" than ANY other make. Buy the SE and double the freebie factor. Honda gives you a name. Big deal. Wow.
I've watched quite a few videos on the Z500 and yours is by far the first video I've been able to see the Z500 in such clear detail. I really appreciate that. That bike is just amazingly beautiful in my eyes. I will definitely be purchasing that bike very soon especially after watching your video. Thank You ✌🏾
just traded my 2021 Z400 for the 2024 Z500 SE. Loving it. Flat seat stops me sliding into the tank like on the Z400 and Ninja. I can slide back on the seat. Notice the extra torque straight away and I am still running it in. Well done Kawasaki.
Be careful what you wish for! When Kawi disco'd the KLR, I asked them to bring it back. When they did in 22, I told them to make it in green and I'd buy one. I am now the proud owner of a green 23 KLR. 💚
Yeah Kawa has so many options for easy growth: a versys 500 would sell like crazy. Especially if they would also make a lightweight offroad model. Also if they would just update their 650 engine for once because it is getting really far behind in the midsection class of bikes.
Well, I'm too old for a Z500 or a Ninja 500 so I bought the Eliminator SE. Same powerplant and the most fun I've had on a bike in a long time. I sold the LAST Harley I will ever own and bought my Eliminator SE. I paid $37,000 for the Harley plus taxes and other charges and it broke down four times within the first year. I lost $9000 in one year and GLAD to be rid if it. I've owned many bikes since 1967 when I bought my first one. Mostly Japanese models. Kawasaki always seems to be my favorite. It seems their engineers knows just the right size tire size and tire design to give their bikes the best handling. Kawasakis are conforctable and reliable. (Can't say the same for a HD). If I were 40 years younger I would probably go with the Ninja 500 over the Z500. I thought about a Ninja 650 but some reports say you have to keep them way up in the rev range to get any powr out of them and around town the 500cc powerplant with it's low end grunt does better around town and even on the curves of a back road. Let the good times roll.
I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be cross shopping small bikes, I’ve had a cbr900rr, dyna wide glide, gsxr’s, MT09, then went to an MT07 currently, my gf wanted to learn to ride so we got her a 2016 ninja 300, which she still rides, I used it to commute to work for a month or so, and realized how much I like ripping on a small displacement bike and using all of the throttle and slipping in and out effortlessly, I’m seriously thinking about trading the MT07 for this bike in particular. I rode a friends ninja 500 and fell in love , but I’m a diy guy and have a disdain for removing full fairings lol. I’m almost there still weighing it in my mind.
after 40+ years of riding bikes with clip ons or drop bars, my ability to turn my head and keep an eye on killer motorists in traffic had reduced as the years increased. Once my head moves forward of my knees i tend to get locked into "track mode" which is not good for my safety (still a stupid-youth at heart) when on public roads. The Z riding position has forced me to lift my head, and keep an eye on all those cars trying to kill me. Loving my new Z500 SE Ride to live - Live to ride.
When I wanted a bike like this I chose the CB500F. It's not a huge bike but it does have more room than the others. This matters if you are six-four like myself. Also I liked the midrange motor of the Honda. It was a small bike that rode more like a big one.
That’s pretty much my thoughts, I rode the Z400 and the 500 Hornet back to back. Like you say, the Honda rides like a bigger bike and the dash on the Hornet is really nice and would be difficult to improve on. I think younger riders might go for the Kawasaki, more mature riders for the Honda.
66 years old. 15th birthday CB125 (New Zealand)RD350 (16 y.o.🫣🏍️😁) F81, T250, TS185, Z440, RD350's, FZ400, RZ350, RZ250, Motobi2C, Ninja300, Z400. 440cc largest in my lifetime. Love lightweight.🏍️🏍️
Have you ever noticed that the “naked” bikes these days actually have more plastic covers than the “sport” bike versions? This one really has that covered, just like the Tuono.
Had a Ninja 300 used it like a baby sports tourer, rode it all over the US. Loved that bike. I can only imagine this one is that much better. The Honda isn’t as fun the way the motor just doesn’t rev out. KTM and CFMoto haven’t risen to the reliability level for serious consideration for me. But excellent point on the Versys 300, had that bike too but would buy a 400 or 500 version in a heartbeat.
Love your videos. I just picked up a new Ninja 500 and seriously looked at the Z500. I liked the fairings and extra wind protection from the Ninja. It’s a complete joy to ride and I’m quite pleased. It’s not going to replace my Africa Twin for long trips, but it’s just a fun and economical bike to make me feel young again.
I gave some solid consideration to getting a CB500X, as I was returning to motorcyclng. The 500s are attractive. But the simple truth is that where I live, everything on the freeway is going 80MPH. And I didn't feel comfortable on the 500s running at those speeds, and having the power to be able to just "get out of the way". I had a Hawk GT back in the day, a bike not known for its power. Commuted daily in Southern California, toured it throughout the southwest. But that was 55MPH speed limit days, it was also pre-Covid. Covid unleashed a lot of drivers, and I simply don't want on a machine that's near tapped out in those conditions. So, I got a 700 instead of a 500.
700😮What, I'm Thinking Of a MotorcycLe @ After 1-st, ....it's been 40 yrs, & reVS Appeal to me', bye Oh i' Thinking Of 25 rc390 it has some updates, but SingLe CyL bikes are

I purchased a 2024 Ninja 500 ... so that one :) I picked it over the Z500 because I like the fully-faired look, and the extra wind protection is nice. I rode a CFMoto 450SS as well, and the ergo's on the 450SS are NOT for casual city riding. I'm sure that bike's fun on a track ...but so is the Ninja 500, and the N500 is infinitely more comfortable to ride.
Bit on the heavy side, useable power, short power band, smooth predictable power delivery, not the best in terms of road to wheel response. Drop a tooth on the front, lightweight exhaust swap, a flash, a decent set of tyres, and some upgraded springs in the front forks will do the bike wonders and become a decent bike, fully stock it's a bit of a let down. Not the best effort from Kawasaki's part though, the ninja has the edge because it does the track well, but when you get the Z500 you are street riding so it needs to be a bit better equipped for that, so the changes I listed should accommodate that slightly more. I would recommend a comfort seat for those taller riders as the comfort seat will add a tiny bit of extra height on the bike. Massive shame that it doesn't come with upside down forks though, that really was a poor choice from Kawasaki not doing that. I will also nit-pick and say that the headlight is too small for the bike, it needs to be slightly longer in height, not length. To me it looks like someone hung their motocross helmet on the front forks, rather than actually styling the light properly. I will be a crank and say that Kawasaki still haven't made a better naked bike than the 2006-08 ER6N, good for pillions, great around town, lightweight, and can sit comfortably on the highway.
I've been riding since the '80s. Bought a leftover 390 Duke in 2018 with the intention of only keeping it one summer. I ended up keeping it 5 years. It was just so tossable and entertaining. Certainly no rocket sled, but quick enough for me. It even ended up being dead reliable. Were I to get a small bike again, I'd lean towards the little Duke or the Svartpilen. I'd at least consider the Kawasaki though.
Owned a Ninja 400 for a year. Most fun bike I ever had. Was all black, put on carbon bits/black windshield/a Leovince slip on and it looked bad ass. So many people thought it was a 1000cc ninja. The engine is super fun and you just want smash through the gears on every road lol. I honestly had more fun with the little ninja than the 675 street triple I owned after it.
@@judge831 the engine was more playful. it really came to live after a certain rmp range. the 675 is a lot more powerful obviously. but its power delivery is extremely even throughout the rev range. the suspension and front end feel is also way better on the triumph (and it instantly made me such a better rider), but the cheap suspension combined with its light weight and fun engine made the 400 just a blast to rev out
I've been around motorcycle media for a couple decades. I wish I could cancel certain terminology out of the system: Dash/dashboard: these are found on old cars (hunk of metal that kills occupants in a wreck; hunk of plastic that crumples in modern vehicles) not motorcycles. This is called an "instrument display" on motorcycles. Even the airbag-equipped Goldwing doesn't have a dash/dashboard. Beginner bike: while there are low-cost, user friendly motorcycles, there's no beginner bikes. This category doesn't exist in manufacturers sales publications and catalogues, and never has. I appreciate the channel, I know you work hard at making quality content as it is your occupation.
I would buy a Suzuki SV650. Great engine that doesn't sound like a lawn mower,. It's been around forever with lots of aftermarket accessories available.
I know it's kind of a different conversation, but whenever I see these new bikes...I mean, they look cool, but I can't help but be extremely happy with my used V-Strom 650, bought for $2.5K.
TSK,,, I WOULD DEFINITELY BUY THAT IF I COULD BUT THE STANDARD VERSION,,, LOTS OF AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES AVAILABLE IN THE PHILIPPINES AT CHEAPER PRICE,,, TSK😂😂😂
Great great review!!! I watch these days tons of movies like yours. Very good to know but at the end is test driving it yourself the solution. Well I did test-drive the Z500 today and I liked it but I also did a test drive with the Honda CL500 and I believe I liked it more. Because of the more upright position and the more relax motor character. I've just sold motorcycle nr 26 or was it 27th🤔 I lost counting them. But to give an example. My last motorcycle was a Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and I really really loved that bike. I sold it because I have place only for one bike. I have some other Passions in my life which requires a lot of time and I just ride for fun. No commuting or racing. Just ride in and around town. So I have to decide yet. Also did a testride with the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 but it wasn't my cup of Thea. First gear to slow. Seems like they did something with the engine mapping to make the first gear slower? And more on/off character of the throttle. More than on the Kawasaki which I think it has no on/off and the Honda is the smoothest. In Belgium living and lots of people buying a bike for their A2 license. Now they can buy a z650 and when they have their full license they get off the restrictions. That wasn't possible, let's say till 5y ago. So, I saw at several dealers in Belgium the Z500 in the showroom and they are still in the showroom. For example. The single cilinders from Triumph, KTM and Royal Enfield are selling much better. The Honda CL500 has for me a more lovely engine character and I prefer the uprising seatposition of it. The Kawasaki has the better electronics and I like it. I think I would go for the Honda CL500 because it has no competitors. Bit to be honest. It is also not a good selling motorcycle around here. Thx for your review🙏
Between the options of bikes you mentioned. Not some other bike I’d rather have, like other idiots will say. I’ll take the Z500 all day. I like the naked bikes and more upright seating. And I prefer the Japanese bikes over the Chinese bikes. Pretty simple.
The only Chinese bikes in the us are CFmoto and scooters lol. But I agree naked and “light adv” bikes make more sense unless you like to ride on track.
I’m on my 4th bike since I started riding early last year. Went from a KLR650 to a V-Star 1100, KLX300 and now a Tracer 900 GT. All used minus the KLR which was new. I hate to push used machines, but if you can find unmolested low mileage bikes near you I feel like it really opens up options budget wise. A friend of mine picked up an FZ6 with only 8.5k on it for $4000 in near perfect condition. A bike he will never outgrow. You can’t even touch that price with a new bike unfortunately.
@@windywater5941From someone who owned the lowered version , not the S just got it lowered as I am only 29 inch inseam , as a daily rider it’s good , put a stain tune exhaust on it , it will beat any car off the lights . You can go on any trail , and ride to the trails , but it’s not a sports bike and it’s heavyish 210 kg . If you don’t go off road get the Versys 650 , that is a fantastic bike , still has a tallish seat 845mm , but you can wind down the preload on the post 22 versions remotely ….for commuting , then make it stiffer for full speed twistie use . The Versys can handle bad bitumen roads , but not great on dirt.
As a bigger guy looking to upgrade from my Vulcan S 650 I think the Z900 SE is going to be my next bike. I just love the classic 4 cylinder sound, unfortunately there's fewer & fewer these days.
A great choice. T z900 has torque everywhere. I'm the opposite. I weigh 130and traded my 900 rs for the zx400rr. Same 4 cyl sound. Less 4th gear torque wheelies. Haaa
I am looking forward to the new 2024 Husqvarna 401, full adjustable suspension and larger gas tank. And yes I would totally be interested in a Versys 500x. I am also waiting for the new Honda Hornet 750 to come to the US too.
They used to have a KLE 500, which was an adventurised version of the old ER5 commuter. Something like that based on this platform would fantastic, but please give it wire wheels and a huge fuel tank!
My old CB500X had the same issue with footpegs / exhaust. Interesting. It's definitely annoying in that it's pretty testable and fixable. To the first question, I have had such a good experience with the Honda 500, that it's hard not to give that the nod. That said, I think this is probably a more exciting engine. Ton of fun can be had on any of them.
I get 73 mpg- 83 mpg depending on if I'm riding balls-to-the wall or cruising backroads on my Eliminator with the same engine. I've never seen any 450 get only 50 mpg.
I think I'm locked on this as my first bike, I wanted something really light and between 400-650cc plus I like the look of the standards. Another choice would be a light cruiser like the eliminator or honda rebel but they seem too bulky. But hey I hardly know anything about bikes and have a lot to learn.
I don't really see what Kawi is going for here. Is there a reason to take the Z500 over the CB500F? The Honda gives you dual disks up front, a longer wheelbase, and 120/160 tires to the Kawi's 110/150. And the Honda has Showa SFFBP upside down forks and the eternal 471 P-twin that will never die.
Z500 is much lighter in weight, the smaller tires also give the Z500 a better agility. This bike have better handling when it come to city riding and small roads.
Have 12 bikes on the road. The Versys X 300 I have is loads of fun on dirt roads. Has enough power to wheel spin for power slides. Yes it's anemic in 6th, plus tooth on counter, up hill but there's always the 2k rpm advantage over the '500' for mechanical advantage option of downshifting. Rode a friend's Ninja 500 SE for a day, impressions: foot pegs high and pipe right at your heels, not as vibey as expected, good roll on in sixth, good brakes, lier pants on fire speedo and inspirational handling. As fun to ride thru the gears as my two stroke Yamahas? No way and even the stock RD400 should out pull it. I did beat a Z400. No need to even try with my RZ350. What's lacking with these larger parallel twins is the crack head top end of my 14k FZ6, and as you mentioned, the angry vacuum cleaner sound track and the ten five redline.
Nice I switched to the Z900 for the weight mostly and 50% city driving the interesting part is I've got almost 200 to the tank so long road trips are very possible but I don't think it's been usable in the rain have sport touring Michelins right now
Good review! I recently purchased a Himalayan 450. I agree 450 is good size motor. I'm not rich, so price is important. In Australia both are 9k which makes them very accessible.
100% agreed. I've done the big bike thing too, and I guess when you start you're bound to want the big guns. But yep, once you've scratched the itch, the 500cc are pure delight and fun and I'm looking for one now, because it's so orgasmic to open the throttle wide all the time and be at legalish speeds. I would not have a 500cc as an only bike, but as a second or third, it's the dog's bollocks. I have the RT1250 and Scrambler 900, looking for either the SR450 or RS457. Why not the CBR500R or the Ninja 500? Because their engines feel and sound to me less 'noble' and gratifying than the other two mentioned.
Great review as usual. To answer your question, of the four bikes you mentioned I'd lean toward the z500. I prefer to stick with japanese reliability over the KTM and I dont think I'd ever buy a chinese bike of any kind. Between the Kawi and the Honda, I lean toward the Kawi because of price, brand loyalty and I like that the Kawi revs out a bit higher. Speaking of reving out, I was pleasantly suprised to see the redline at 11k. There was a lot of talk about how the added displacement of the new 451 engine was going to mean lower revs, which I thought was kind of a bummer. But sacrificing only 1k rpm from the redline for 50cc's doesnt seem like a terrible compromise. I think the big question now, is what does this new engine do to Kawasaki's 650 bikes? Do they bump those up to a 750? Also, why doesn't Kawasaki feel the need to offer a middle weight adv bike? Do they really expect people who get started on a VersysX to want to graduate to a KLR?
When comparing this bike with the CB500 Hornet the most important question to me is: Do I want a screamer that revs to 11,500 rpm or do I want a more relaxed, relatively long-stroke engine that cuts off at 8,500 rpm? Do I want to rev the snot out of my bike or do I want torque down low? And: Can the Kawa beat or match 3,5L/100 km/h?
I would love a Z650 RS with a CF 450 engine. That would be the perfect combo of looks, power, and sound. The price of registration in my country is double between A2 and full A 😔
From the option you give, probably the Duke. I'll admit I have bias as I'm already an 890 Adv R owner, but something about the Duke platform feels special. Even the 390 feels less pedestrian than the Kawi or MT-03. It's also nicely equipped for tech.
Of the competition you mentioned.. I'd probably go with the Kawasaki but only if it was green. It's a cool bike. I got to sit on one and, it's got great ergos for a sport/comfort kind of vibe.
6:15 What do those vibrations mean that appear at a certain speed or engine RPM? For example, on a Honda CB500X, those unpleasant vibrations can be felt when reaching a speed of around 100 km/h or at about 5000 RPM. But when you go past that speed, they disappear.
With any of the Big Japanese bike manufacturers it's hard to go wrong..... you will most likely get a long lived power plant that needs a minimum of upkeep. That's huge if you don't own tools & don't work on your own stuff. So ya got the Ninja 400/500 & then these Naked Bikes to compete in the new rider tastes department? IDKnow, I'm trying to make sense of all these bikes out there..... there's so many to choose from & I'm looking for a 1st bike since the early 90's. But I've got my lists of 8-10 Dual Sport bikes which I've researched them including mods & prices for the mods that I would want on each bike. All that said, I had to stop b/c I didn't know exactly what this bike was - I like it but I don't think I could take her down the gravel path very well? Some of you can but I'd crash// peace
So I personally own a Cfmoto 450ss (my 23rd bike) and work at a cycle gear so I’ve seen and rode the ninja 500. Hands down the Cfmoto is better in my opinion. The engine has so much character and looks really good. Also the features beat the ninja by far. Example: turn by turn navigation on the dash, music operation from the button on the clip on, gps tracking on the app through movement notifications. The braking is also better with the brembo brake. Im not trying to put the ninja 500 down but it’s almost as uninteresting as the cbr500 when it comes to the engine. Now working in my shop the ninja 400 is still king. Almost all new rider are hunting for a ninja 400 for a good deal. I do tell them the Cfmoto is a bike you can “grow with” not “into”. What do I mean, it’s a good bike that you can start on and then as you grow as a rider and maybe take some classes and become a better rider, you’ll see how capable the 450 really is. However it does have a skill cap. Once you get really good and take it to the track and you’ll see the limitations. However for everyday use on the street you’ll have a blast. Thanks for reading my comment and ride safe people🤙🏼
I am really interested to buy this z500 or ninja 500. Have had more than 25 motorcycles from motorscooters to a bmw 1200 to a KTM duke 390/690, triumph legend TT VFR800, TDM900 and now I am riding a Royal Enfield Meteor 350 with nearly 20HP. This last one I have to longest in my possession. It's for sale now, not because it is bad. It is a really fun slow bike. And I couldn't agreed more......using the term of Beginnersbikes or bike for women. It's bullshit. For example, I've had much more fun riding the KTM 390 than a BMW R850R for example. Riding on the highway only a true touring bike is good for that and even than......3 bikes I liked to do highway with it. VFR800, Ducati ST2 and a Varadero 1000cc. And all the other big Cilinderbikes were shit on the highway. And in the city and just outside the city you can have as much fun on a low CC bike than on a big bike. Probably more fun on a smaller engine bike than on a bigger. I think the new generation middle class bikes like this 451 engine, triumph speed 400, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and more are the best of 2 worlds. Traffic in Europe is getting more and more crowdy. More and more speed limits. So yes I'll will go for a test ride with this Kawasaki. The only thing I don't like about these water-cooled middle class bikes is the sound in higher revs. But hey, it is still much much better than the sound of a motorscooter, even with a aftermarket muffler. Been there done that! Great review by the way 👌🏻😉
I'd get the previous gen Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. Test rode one last year, the KTM single is delightful and the Swedish styling is the cherry on top. Not a huge fan of this year's redesign though. Still prefer it over the Duke, but it's a bit watered down.
I'm a Harley rider and I do love them but I have really been craving a lighter sportier bike to just hop on and go. I'm experienced on cruisers but not on sports & nakeds etc I came across the Z500 which was appealing to me because of the pricepoint, light weight, style and approachable reasonable power. Do you think this is the right entry for a experienced cruiser rider to enter the naked segment? Will I outgrow it quickly? Does it feel stable enough for highway commutes between 70-80 mph or will it be in high end of rev range in 6th gear? Any other nakeds you would recommend under $8k new that would suit me better? I'm 6 foot 190lbs. Everyone keeps telling me to go for an MT-07 or Triumph Trident 660. There is alot more Kawasaki dealers near me which is another reason why I'm looking at the Z500 because of more dealer support near me.
The Z 500 might be a tight fit for you. What I did to mine was put bar risers that go up and back an inch and raised the seat up by putting washers and longer bolts on the bracket that holds the seat up in front with an Amazon seat and seat cover plus I put a sponge between the seat and seat cover, so my crotch does not slide into the tank constantly
I wish you would have touched on the rider connect that they offered on this bike as well, incase I missed it I apologize. I feel the versey's 500 is coming, they didn't even bother to give that bike another color option this year just the same one from last year....
Why don't you mention one of the biggest pros of this bike which is its beautiful esthetics, it looks really great - nimble and aggressive at the same time. I used to own an ER6n, now changed it to Z800 but I miss the swiftness of ER.
I just got this bike and I love it, but for me it feels like the shift indicator flashes really quickly. It also feels like the bike wants to be in sixth gear by the time I hit 50 mph. I am a new rider and don't really know how you can get to 60 in 3rd gear
I traded my 19' yami R1 to my son for his 18' Kawi Z125! Sure you can do 105mph in first gear on the R1 but doing 50MPH on the z125 feels like 105mph..
Great review. I've got a Z900 for commuting, but sometimes I wish I could have a smaller bike for easier filtering in the traffic. Oh, and next time when someone says your small bike, it's a 'girl bike'. Ask them this: Do you know the military motorcycles in WW2 only had 20 - 30 hp? Would you call them girl motorcycles too? 😂
Would you buy the Z500 or a small adventure bike?

Ian, the Z500 is a great looking bike! With my 59th birthday approaching quickly, I would buy a small adventure bike. The ergonomics and commuter friendliness of the adventure bike is more practical for my style of riding. (Full disclosure, I've been riding my CRF300L Rally for the past 2+years, just want something with a little more power).
Small ADV bike. Honda NX500. More versatile.
@@dwb468 right, exactly

I bought an outgoing 2023 z400. I'm 70 years old, pretty much a "noobie" in the parlance of the motorcycle world, and the deciding factor for me is the weight of the bike, the lighter the better.
Same here. I'm 70 years old and for me the Z500 is as big and as heavy as I would want to go.
Big deal. Wow.
@@irisvdb5639 Buy a Z 400 used, see if you like it, if you don’t, you can sell it for what you paid for it.
I've watched quite a few videos on the Z500 and yours is by far the first video I've been able to see the Z500 in such clear detail. I really appreciate that. That bike is just amazingly beautiful in my eyes. I will definitely be purchasing that bike very soon especially after watching your video.
Thank You ✌🏾
Glad I could help!
just traded my 2021 Z400 for the 2024 Z500 SE. Loving it. Flat seat stops me sliding into the tank like on the Z400 and Ninja. I can slide back on the seat. Notice the extra torque straight away and I am still running it in. Well done Kawasaki.
If Kawi would just put this engine in a Versys model...
Are you listening, Kawasaki? I'd buy one today!
At least make a versys 400. I think a 500 will just end up like a cb500x. I would actually prefer the cb400x but I think only Japan gets that model.
@@chrishart8548 I'm hoping that they will feel some pressure from the CF Moto 450 MT/Ibex.
Two for us!
Best review for z500 on RUclips.
Thanks
@@davidgearardo1788 get the Z rather than the Ninja. Head up in traffic, weight on your core not your arms.

I rode the nk450 with very low expectations. I was so surprised in a good way it totally changed my perspective. I would recommend it
I purchased a z500 SE last week and I love it
It's too powerful for you.
after 40+ years of riding bikes with clip ons or drop bars, my ability to turn my head and keep an eye on killer motorists in traffic had reduced as the years increased. Once my head moves forward of my knees i tend to get locked into "track mode" which is not good for my safety (still a stupid-youth at heart) when on public roads. The Z riding position has forced me to lift my head, and keep an eye on all those cars trying to kill me. Loving my new Z500 SE
Ride to live - Live to ride.
Nice, sharp review. Thanks also for taking the time to provide metric conversions.
@@ronlysons6750 Yes, it looks like even the styling of the Z500 is aimed at youngsters.

Do you notice vibration?

Thanks for sharing!
I like the Ninja 500 because it's virtually the same as the Z500 but with the wind coverage.
Ian, you should Trademark your enthusiastic giggles and laughter sounds. They set you apart 😎🤙🏻
Zack @ Revzilla ?
I put a deposit on this one today and your review reassured me Ty!
would have to be the honda CB500F from the choices given :) looking forward to your himalayan 450 review
Why was it more fun that the 675?
@@judge831 the engine was more playful. it really came to live after a certain rmp range. the 675 is a lot more powerful obviously. but its power delivery is extremely even throughout the rev range. the suspension and front end feel is also way better on the triumph (and it instantly made me such a better rider), but the cheap suspension combined with its light weight and fun engine made the 400 just a blast to rev out
I've been around motorcycle media for a couple decades. I wish I could cancel certain terminology out of the system:
Dash/dashboard: these are found on old cars (hunk of metal that kills occupants in a wreck; hunk of plastic that crumples in modern vehicles) not motorcycles.
Manufacturers might not but goverments do.. A1 A2, LAMS etc
@@unknownps That's not the same terminology. Not sure what you're talking about. "Learner" isn't spelled "beginner bike".
I would buy a Suzuki SV650. Great engine that doesn't sound like a lawn mower,. It's been around forever with lots of aftermarket accessories available.
Difference in cost between the two is a factor
I know it's kind of a different conversation, but whenever I see these new bikes...I mean, they look cool, but I can't help but be extremely happy with my used V-Strom 650, bought for $2.5K.
TSK,,, I WOULD DEFINITELY BUY THAT IF I COULD BUT THE STANDARD VERSION,,, LOTS OF AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES AVAILABLE IN THE PHILIPPINES AT CHEAPER PRICE,,, TSK😂😂😂
Suspension is shit though. I owned one and it was great other than that.
Agree, I had EX500 as a first bike.
What do you think about a KLR650 being a daily driver?
Now you can buy a Z400 with low miles for around $4k and it's 95% the same bike. I'm very happy with mine!
Keen for that teased 21 incher ADV bike with this engine that is supposed to be coming!
As a bigger guy looking to upgrade from my Vulcan S 650 I think the Z900 SE is going to be my next bike. I just love the classic 4 cylinder sound, unfortunately there's fewer & fewer these days.
Z900, amazing bike
A great choice. T z900 has torque everywhere. I'm the opposite. I weigh 130and traded my 900 rs for the zx400rr. Same 4 cyl sound. Less 4th gear torque wheelies. Haaa
Z500 for comfort, Ninja 500 for looks
I am looking forward to the new 2024 Husqvarna 401, full adjustable suspension and larger gas tank. And yes I would totally be interested in a Versys 500x. I am also waiting for the new Honda Hornet 750 to come to the US too.
Great review! Would love to see your review on the CB500f as like you said its the obvious cross shop.
CF450 MT for me, a true all rounder
Best motorcycle reviews on youtube
They used to have a KLE 500, which was an adventurised version of the old ER5 commuter. Something like that based on this platform would fantastic, but please give it wire wheels and a huge fuel tank!
I’d like if they made a retro 500. Or a versys 400.
Great review, thanks!
I love the z500 because I was able to buy a new 2022 z400 for less than MSRP OTD 😁
Yes, I did the same thing! 😀
😂😂😮😮WELL
I get 73 mpg- 83 mpg depending on if I'm riding balls-to-the wall or cruising backroads on my Eliminator with the same engine. I've never seen any 450 get only 50 mpg.
Another great and thorough review! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Or the new cb500 hornet
Thanks for sharing
Think I'd still get a used SV650. Less tech, just more. But the z500 does seem pretty nice.
Too much power for some beginners. Perfect second bike unless you have experience on dirt bikes.
Z400 is a heck of a deal
It's so small though it looks like a 125
I'd go for the Ninja 500. I like the looks and the extra wind protection. Plus, that Ninja name has some serious cache'
Great review. i would go with the honda cb500f personally, but this would be the 2nd choice.
More Street Bike reviews!
Noted!
Thanks for this!
You should compare the mt 03 with this
Great review as usual.
Great review, all the better because you are exactly the same dimensions as me.
Stuck on this and Rebel 500 first bike
I bought the 390 duke. I love the bike, however I wish I got the z500 set. It's just a smoother bike. The 390 duke seat is very uncomfortable.
When comparing this bike with the CB500 Hornet the most important question to me is:
Do I want a screamer that revs to 11,500 rpm or do I want a more relaxed, relatively long-stroke engine that cuts off at 8,500 rpm?
Do I want to rev the snot out of my bike or do I want torque down low?
And: Can the Kawa beat or match 3,5L/100 km/h?
Eh, don’t really need much low end torque when the ride is so enjoyable anyways, it’s only by comparison that the majority of the power is up high
For me it would be a hard decision between Kawasaki Z500 and Honda CB500. I do not like how KTM looks. CF moto is trash imo.
I went with the Z500 bc i liked them both and they were pretty much similar but i went with the Z because chatgpt told me it was faster sob😊
Plus they tend to mellow as a bike breaks in .
Im 6'1". Would I be comfortable on a road trip? Im thinking about getting one.
Nice bike I thought that was you zipping bye. Love the vids brother ✨
With any of the Big Japanese bike manufacturers it's hard to go wrong..... you will most likely get a long lived power plant that
needs a minimum of upkeep. That's huge if you don't own tools & don't work on your own stuff. So ya got the Ninja 400/500
& then these Naked Bikes to compete in the new rider tastes department? IDKnow, I'm trying to make sense of all these
bikes out there..... there's so many to choose from & I'm looking for a 1st bike since the early 90's. But I've got my lists
of 8-10 Dual Sport bikes which I've researched them including mods & prices for the mods that I would want on each bike.
All that said, I had to stop b/c I didn't know exactly what this bike was - I like it but I don't think I could take her down the
gravel path very well?
Thanks for reading my comment and ride safe people🤙🏼
The cf moto is also my favorite in this segment.
I would go with the CF Moto 450Nk, the 270° crank with that v twin sound and the tech for the price, can't beat it. 👍
Looks like a hell of a lot of fun!
Did you notice less directional stability at highway speeds with the (shorter) 54" wheelbase? ... vs. a 58+" cruising wheelbase?
Great review by the way 👌🏻😉
That laugh 🤯 kill the whole thing for me
Given the options, I'd get the Ninja 500. It's a familiar platform and it's a workhorse. Not quite a bulletproof bike, but it's close enough.
50 mpg? That low for this size bike, I would have expected more. My CBR500R would get 70 mpg at times
lol nice bike but I'd actually pay SE price not for ugly TFT screen but for beautiful analogue dials like on the W800 !
Did you sell the klx?
I wish you would have touched on the rider connect that they offered on this bike as well, incase I missed it I apologize. I feel the versey's 500 is coming, they didn't even bother to give that bike another color option this year just the same one from last year....
The only reason I’d want the se is the color , the extra stuff doesn’t really matter to me , if they made a base model in red , I’d buy that .
I would buy a Yamaha MT-03 due to better chassis.
How is this compared to the Guerrilla 450?
Hello, is this okay as a new bike for a beginner who is short? (1m60)? thank you
Why don't you mention one of the biggest pros of this bike which is its beautiful esthetics, it looks really great - nimble and aggressive at the same time. I used to own an ER6n, now changed it to Z800 but I miss the swiftness of ER.
2nd time watching this one......good job
Awesome! Thank you!
Hello Big Rock Moto: Looking for your review of kawasai versys 650. Especially help us compare NX 500 Honda.
Triumph scrambler 400x review coming anytime soon?
I just got this bike and I love it, but for me it feels like the shift indicator flashes really quickly. It also feels like the bike wants to be in sixth gear by the time I hit 50 mph. I am a new rider and don't really know how you can get to 60 in 3rd gear
I use the entire rev range
Please review the Versys X 300
I traded my 19' yami R1 to my son for his 18' Kawi Z125! Sure you can do 105mph in first gear on the R1 but doing 50MPH on the z125 feels like 105mph..
Waiting for your review on a 24 Duke 390
Great review. I've got a Z900 for commuting, but sometimes I wish I could have a smaller bike for easier filtering in the traffic. Oh, and next time when someone says your small bike, it's a 'girl bike'. Ask them this: Do you know the military motorcycles in WW2 only had 20 - 30 hp? Would you call them girl motorcycles too? 😂
I swear I can only hear the angriest cow. Guessing its the induction, but I just have a steer getting progressively angrier in my ears
The municipality needs to maintain these roads. :)
