I was the grand prize winner of the Judge Dredd pinball machine from this issue. I was a sophomore in high school at the time. Wizard hosted the contest for Bally Midway. For some reason Bally Midway took a long time to deliver the machine, I think it was 6 months or so after being notified I won. The folks at Wizard magazine were great! They felt bad about the pinball machine taking so long to be delivered so they sent me a bunch of gold cards, gold Maxx 1/2 issue and a Judge Dredd vinyl model kit. I never had my picture in the mag I think because it took so long. Unfortunately I had to sell the machine after being laid off a couple jobs in a row when I was in my early 20s. That was over 20 years ago now. The machine itself was the coolest thing ever.
I love that cover. This was the first Wizard I owned and I still own it. This was early in my comic book collecting and I think the coverage of Kirby's death was my first knowledge of him.
I appreciate the Andrew Wildman shout out. I had no interest in Black Cat but I picked up the miniseries thanks to this very same ad. I really liked his art and was so stoked when he came onto Spider-Man 2099- unfortunately only a short while before that line imploded. Anyway, I agree that he’s a great artist that is a bit of a hidden gem.
Jo Duffy was on the catwoman book for like 12 issues. She captured the characters voice I feel a bit better than the rest of the bat office. No disrespect to Chuck and Doug (as they probably told better stories) Can't remember the reasons for her departure but I think it might have related to delays. Apparently Dixon wrote her knightsend issue.
Allred's movie was called Astroesque. It was a companion to his Red Rocket 7 comics, along with a record by his band, The Gear. There was also a movie called "G-Men from Hell" based on his characters.
This issue is by FAR the most memorable for me. I'm right in between you 2 in age, and my thoughts on finding out Kirby passed away was the same as Ed's. The King is Dead, Long Live the King!
As one or two others mentioned, Andrew Wildman was the original run artist on X-Men Adventures before leaving and John Hebert taking over. Oddly, Wildman drew issue 1 and Hebert did issue 2 of the 4-part Pizza Hut X-Men series.
What happened at Valianet and Quesada was simply that Q was taking his sweet time, working on two books and being slow to begin with, which led to bad blood and threat of lawsuits. Somehow they settled and Q went to form Event...
In 1994, before eBay, you could still get original art covers for $300. Grab one of those old CBGs and look at the Original Artwork ads. Just no Lee Weeks Gambit art.
Okay, not sure if a Madman movie got made but I have an old DVD of Mike Allred's other movie property. There was a movie made of G-Men from Hell starring Gary Busey and Robert Goulet. It is generally hard to find and mostly not worth the effort. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-Men_from_Hell

I remember Marvel trying to half heartedly use the Ultraverse characters, even going so far as to send some of their lower tier characters into the Utraverse for a while, but it was my understanding that they bought Malibu for the coloring department more than anything else.
I'm quite a bit older than you guys, so I understand you not understanding how much Cockrum was regarded at Marvel before his X-men work. I suggest you read Giant-Size Avengers #2, inked by the Crusty Bunkers to see his true greatness.
I have the 4 Andrew Wildman Black Cat comics. It was those and especially Liam Sharpe's run on the Hulk that really pulled me into comics. But I remember loving that he drew her as athletic and not as a super model. That really stuck out to me at the time when comics were dominated by Balent-esque super model, or "boober models" as one of my friends called them. I will say that the Hulk wedding issue had ONE good part. When Mephisto shows up to take Marlo's soul and the Hulk clocks the hell out of him. he points out that they were "gathered together under God" and muses that "what if those aren't just words" he then points out that this may be the only chance they will have to end Mephisto. I loved how Silver Surfer was totally down with that idea. It was goofy, but I liked the idea. God I hated the Phalanx stuff, but Generation X was my jam. Though I was always frustrated how under powered Sync was made to be. He should've been god-like.

this was the last issue of wizard I bought, it was right after this my local shop closed and I bailed out of comics for sports and girls lol
