The first time I ever heard this song was an a capella version by the international gold medalist women's barbershop quartet Growing Girls. They had me sobbing with the emotion in their performance. The arrangement they sang, if memory serves, was by the composer himself, who I believe is a friend of their coach.
But it's true: Tommy Körberg OWNS this song, and this is the best rendition by him that I've heard; perhaps because it's in the original Swedish. Fabulous.

I am half Swedish/Dutch, born in Sweden and living in Holland. Every time I watch this...I have to swallow REAL hard.The melody, the way he sings it with that beautiful voice, the words....They get me every time.

For me, especially since I first heard him perform this on the original album, Korberg owns this song! I'm just shocked that he can still display the same range and power after all these years!
How wonderful piano and voice xxxx...my swedish friend sent it to me. Im a professional soprano singer on tour in Europe now. Is always a delight to hear my musical mates succeed with such a songs xx I have many swedish fans and their ability to create music is extrardinary. To them with this song my best warm alohas xxx

In any language, this song gives me the shivers!. ANd this rendition with the simple piano accompaniment and the choir, wow! It really lets Tommy shine. I saw Tommy perform this in 1986 in the London Production. It was my first ever professional theater experience and it was amazing. While others are certainly free to give it there best shot, Tommy Korberg will always own Anatoly Sergievsky in the same way that Colm Wilkinson will always own Jean ValJean or Michael Crawford the Phantom,

It is from the UK. It was translated from English. The writer of the original English lyrics was Tim Rice, who isn't Swedish, last time I checked.

I'm a rabid Josh Groban fan, and I have to say that "Anthem" is not his song. It's Tommy's song. This does not lessen my adoration for Josh. It just expands my personal list of good music. :)
I do wonder though, in years to come, if Josh's voice will mature even more and will be able to wrap itself as deeply around this song as Tommy's does. I'll be listening.

Usually THE ORIGINAL is the best but that changed when Josh Groban sang this song. Josh's voice has more power, clarity, richness and depth that i was impressed from beginning to end.
Such a beautiful language. I wish I spoke it, never mind sing in it. Still, it is a joy to listen to.

One of the greatest theatrical experiences of my life was seeing Elaine Paige and Korberg in the original London production of Chess in 1986. I thought it was perfect! Why did some of the creators think they could improve it? Why was it rewritten for America? Why is the original version NOT ALLOWED to be performed in the U.S.? It's a strange world indeed.....
Sung beautifully...and in Swedish! I have to say, between Tommy and Josh Groban, it's remarkably difficult to pick a favorite.
Exactly, it's all well and good for heavy metal etc. but it has no place in musical theatre. In other news, I'd be interested to hear Mr Körberg sing this same song in his younger years, if anyone has any links.

Tommy Körberg could be the best Swedish singer in all times. Together with music from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (former ABBA) it could only be success! (this song is also available with english lyrics.)

Hi 87 - Just a tiny correction, Welsh is a totally different language to English, and similarly Wales is a totally different country. Wales is in the United Kingdom, which also includes Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, but it's not in England. Not being rude - just educating you... :o)

He has not taken any singing lessons at all from what I've heard. So , what you hear from him comes from natural talent and whatever he's learned during his career.
There are lots of folks who can sing...but either don't realize that they can, or have never tried. I'm like him in a way; I can sing, but of course, I'm no performer.
This is the original, noone will EVER outsing Körberg especially Groban. but keep in mind that groban is probably 25 years younger than Körberg now but when Körberg was grobans age.... ha! groban can go and hide! Anthony warlow though..... he is gooooooood!! can really compete with körberg!

OK Josh Grobins Versons is without a doubt "tha hammer" BUT: Körberg is better, not only that he is THE Original, the song itself is much better in swedish, if i may say so, as a german ;-))) IFor me That is THE best Version ever!!!!
