Hey, used this functionality yesterday for the first time and didn’t realize that it would post a comment. Let me be a bit more specific: I am not only searching for possible workflows/tricks but for best practices that actually make my life easier. In that search I often have doubts: hey, this is a lot of work. Is there a better way or is it worth it? Am I overcomplicating my life? So mentioning that for simplicity, one may not want to have bins very different from the folder structure etc make a big difference to me.
This was really helpful! I've been organizing my media in bins on the harddrive before importing it to resolve which have worked well with my small projects but this is a way better method no matter project size. Will apply it from now on, thanks for great tutorials!
I think the reason you can make the filesystem structure and the bin-structure vary from each other is to facilitate a situation where the files on disk are produced by one person/team, but the editor wants a different structure for their work. If the same person is doing both, you can certainly make them the same. In my projects, the file system is typically temporal/chronological and contains dates for when things were done. My bin-organization, however, is more a reflection of the state of clips: have they been reviewed? Have they been cut into subclips? What are the selects? Have they been tagged with keywords? And so on.
Yes that’s true that an editor might appreciate a different bin structure. Don’t forget though that selects, processed clips, etc can always be marked and organised dynamically with metadata and smart bins. It has the advantage of media existing in multiple places simultaneously. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks again for another great video. I have a request. You mentioned the topic of MultiCam. Can you either suggest a good how-to presentation or create one, please? I have used multicam tools a few times but feel as if I lack a good understanding on how to set it up. Kind regards

Thank you very much for this excellent tutorial which helped me a lot to understand the complex part around metadata in DR! 👌👌 Strangely enough, searching for keywords using the 'search field' doesn't work for me. After some trial and error, I found out that to do this you have to select 'keyword' in the 'Filter by' pull-down' menu next to the search field; the search doesn't work across 'all fields' (it does for all fields other than keyword). Personally, I think this might be a BUG in the current DR version 19.1 as it was definitely working 19.0.
Yes! Turn the in and out points into a duration marker and assign a keyword. It's an awesome feature that's unique to DaVinci Resolve. We've got a lesson on this in an upcoming course.
@@team2films gah okay I did this, but for whatever reason you can’t hover scrub the clips when doing this! lol I feel like everything is so close, but just has something lacking. I have resorted to creating sub clips of the in and out using “option+B”, and then using a quick key shortcut to add a keyword.
@@livingforhim Yes that's true. Live Media Preview doesn't work on duration markers. It's worth mentioning this in the Resolve forums. Blackmagic is very open to community feedback.
This is one of my favourite channel for learning Da Vinci ... One question ... Is there a way to organise the keyword smart bin into folders? The list of keywords in a big project can become very long... and it would convenient to be able to create folders like in FCPX.
Ah man! That would be awesome. No I don’t think can organise smart bins the way you are describing. That would be a great feature request. Thanks for watching
Hello! That’s great but I wonder if there’s anyway to assign key words to clips that were cut in timeline. For instance: I have a big clip of, let’s say, 20 minutes. There’s a bunch of themes on this clip, and in timeline I cut it in 10 different segments, can I assign different keywords to these particular segments of the same clip?
If you select the clip, hit F it will load it into the source viewer. From there you can turn those in and out points into a marker and assign a keyword to that marker. It's a little long winded, but it is VERY possible.
Thank you for this, it is a good place to start. Can you provide information about metadata and editing in a group situation when multiple editors need to search video files, is the metadata available to them on a network?
Hi Great presentation and easy to follow, not rushed! i have a question if i may, why cant i find a save button at the bottom of the Metadata page as this young lady shows, i would like to enter the date recorded, i have auto save on but still no joy?
The save button is only visible when you editing the metadata of multiple clips at the same time. If you are only editing a single clip there is no save button and your metadata is automatically saved to the clip in your media pool. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
@@team2films Hi again , followed your instructions, brought them into bins filled in date recorded ,which is whats important to me ,but when i check this morning all that info is missing, i thought by not moving the clips out of DaVinci 18 would preserve that but no!
Heya, I have a question. I spent a lot of time setting markers, compound clips and user keywords for everything, thinking that all of my bins and smartbins would stay full even across new/old projects. However, when I closed out of, and then reopened the same project (let alone starting a new project), I had no bins and no keywords. When I rstarted to put clips into bins again, they did not have their keywords attached. When I would start to type a keyword, Autofill would show that they keyword DOES exist somewhere - but everything looks empty, making me have to start over - which sort of defeats the purpose of user keywords and master/power/smart bins. No? Have you encountered this situation, or do you know what I need to do in order to ensure that all of my media stays connected? Thanks for the insight.
Thanks for a concise and to-the-point video. Just to clarify: the keywords discussed in this video exist in a DaVinci project, and the metadata of the original file is not affected, right? So the "keywording" happens only after you've created a project. Is there a way to use keywords from a footage file metadata?
Brilliant as always. May I ask hat is you name by the way? And how do we make smart bins for different cameras . When I do it it always is less intuitive then what I think. Can you help please? Cheers Jens
Hello Jens, that’s a good question about creating smart bins for different cameras. Not every camera puts metadata in the file that specifically names the camera, but it’s possible sometimes based on the way that the camera names it’s files and other things like resolution and codec. Maybe we’ll make a video on it. Thanks for watching. Natalie.

What's confusing is the Media Page still "views" multiple clips (after applying Detect Scene Cuts in Edit Page) as basically clones of the source video, so essentially a 5 second clip is still a 2 hour movie to the Media Page!
