John Stuart because racing is cool exciting and action packed and unpredictable what keeps people watching lame and boring sports like football and basketball
Mark Jackson Don't forget Dale Earnhardt Jr (I thought he would have been at least an honorable mention along with Bill Elliott). But that's just my opinion.
Mark Jackson ik they missed big name on this list and dale sr ur number 1 he didnt win a championship after gordon came along and gordon after johnson well accutal the chase but hey thats nascar doing and kyle bucsh us tallent current driver i think im going to do a list that is how i feel and ill give reasons why not just through the list together ill do a list of current and past and where i feel like list will blend
Mark Jackson yet where gordon would have won his 7th championship in 2014 if chase was not a thing and was close many times in 2014 first year of win and ur in gordon won in every format but the win and ur in so i would like to tell u gordon was a better driver the dale u had a couple years gordon did beat dale and the one year they where close jeff won and who has won 13 race in a year only 2 drivers ever gordon and Richard and Richard raced 50 race that year gordon race 32

Dale Earnhardt Jr??? At the very least should've been a honorable mention. Even though he (unfortunately) never won a title, the connection he had with the fans was unbelievable!
Really surprised that Bill Elliot isn't on this list. Mr. Popularity for most of his career, the first to win 1,000,000 in what was then The Winston, and the only driver who will have ever won a race at Talladega by coming from 2 1/2 laps behind under green. Thought he'd at least get a mention.
I would have put Alan Kulwicki on the list and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Davey Alison. Alan for being the first successful Winston Cup champion. (R.I.P Alan) Dale Earnhardt Jr. because he is Jr. Davey Alison winning 10 percent of the races he ran and he was supper popular. (R.I.P Davey)
The only thing that important about Jr is He is an Earnhardt He's not that good he doesn't even have a championship, what spot will he take? His dad's? He's an Earnhardt Icon, Kyle Busch is more an Icon, M&M best villain, villain thats actually really good
I would agree, but its hard to fight 7 championships in 16 years. We are watching history, the guy is gonna leave one hell of a legacy. But I do like Gordon a lot more.
I am genuinely happy with this list. Don't get me wrong, Richard Petty definetly deserves the title he was given, but Dale Earnhardt Sr. is seriously the best stock car racer in Nascar history. Number 3 is number 1. Literally.
Leaving Bill Elliott, Darrel Waltrip, Rusty Wallace off this list is inexcusable. They helped shape the sport to gain the popularity it saw a massive boost in 80s and early 90s
If Scott was on this list, then so would Montoya, Ambrose, and other less noticeable drivers that didn't really make a difference in the sport. YES! He was a drivers driver and really good. But if he was THAT good... why didn't he win more? You could say 'well nascar was racist'. But you also have to remember that NFL, MLB, PGA, Boxing, and other sports were racist during the same time period. Yet, those sports had PLENTY of breakout players. Scott simply did not break out because he didn't have the talent & ability to adjust his equipment at the time. I'm not docking Scott, but he does not belong on this list.
BLACK ICEYOU Championship > Wins. That's pretty simple. Plus Jimmie is still going, could still beat Gordon in wins. But at the end of the day JJ still has 3 more championships than Gordon, which means a hell of a lot more than being 10 wins behind him.
BLACK ICEYOU you dont lose because you're a dumbass that refuses to look at others opinions & facts. You're in racing to win championships. Hell 1 championship can get you into the hall of fame. 3 drivers in racing history have ever been good enough to win 7 championships. Those 3 are the best. Sorry if you disagree because you're a Gordon fanboy but fact is in the record book JJ tops Jeff. Plus no one was good enough to win 5 straight championships other than JJ. I'm done with this conversation cause obviously you thing Jeff is the best due to being a fan, and I hate closed minded people.
It's not a sport for the reason you're thinking about. It's a sport because its involves physical exertion and skill, and drivers and teams compete against each other not only for entertainment, but for victory.
The list needs to be like this: #1. Richard Petty #2. Dale Earnhardt #3. Jimmie Johnson #4. David Pearson #5. Jeff Gordon #6. Cale Yarborough #7. Bobby Allison #8. Darrell Waltrip #9. Herb Thomas #10. Lee Petty Stewart is too high and Kyle Busch will probably be in the top ten someday. Still has great ten years left in him. Darrell Waltrip should definitely be in the top ten. The man has 3 championships, 84 wins, and 390 top tens. And Bobby Allison should not be ahead of Jeff Gordon. Gordon has nine more wins and three more championships than Allison in a much more competitive era. David Pearson being out of the top five is an insult. The guy only ran full time 4 seasons and won three championships. 105 wins ain't too shabby either.
I remember Richard Petty came to the U.K for abit, he came to my little brothers school to talk about NASCAR, he gave my brother his autograph and was happy ever since
My family was on vacation in London and we had just finished a tour of the Tower London when out of nowhere Petty showed up! I was in a complete daze for the next half-hour; guy was so nice too, let us get pictures with him!
+mathprodigy I know right! My only regret is that I was in such a daze I forgot to ask for his autograph, but that hardly makes a dent in the experience!
Petty just raced for so long, I gotta give #1 to him. Big E was an amazing driver, I agree, I was a fan of his son, but Petty’s sheer numbers put him #1 for me
We have an engine from Dale Earnhardt's team bought a few months before his death, still runs great and winning races. A SBC prototype of a special kind
My Top 10: 10. Ned Jarrett 9. Bill Elliott 8. Darrell Waltrip 7. Bobby Allison 6. Cale Yarborough 5. Jeff Gordon 4. David Pearson 3. Jimmie Johnson 2. Dale Earnhardt 1. Richard Petty
I personally thought that Richard Petty would have been #1, but that's not just my opinion, but I'm sure alot of other people would agree with me on that. Nice list though.
It's fitting that all three 7-timers are in the top 3. Before they got to Jimmie Johnson, I was getting discouraged. Hopefully Jimmy Johnson will rebound here in 2019 and get a record-breaking 8th championship!
Nascar in my opinion would be better if they ditched stage racing and the chase for the cup system. It's truly astonishing how many drivers got screwed over by the chase system! As for stage racing, what's the point of slowing the race down for little to no issue at all when there isn't even a crash or something that would cause a caution?
I agree 100%, but will take it a step further. Higher position, more points. Extra points for winning. Fewer points for DNFs. Consistency matters almost as much as finishing, putting an end to "checkers or wreckers".
Nobody got screwed by the chase more than Jeff Gordon. He would've won the championship in 2004, 2007 and 2014 if they stuck with the Winston Cup points format. And Jimmie Johnson would only be a two time champion
Honestly, I would consider putting Jeff in the top 3 due to his mass amount of wins, championships and most important the number of fans that he brought to the sport.
Dear WatchMojo people? , Why isn't Bill Elliott ( Million Dollar Bill, Awesome Bill from Dawesonville) not even mentioned. - First driver to win the Winston Million (1985) - 1988 Winston Cup Champion - 2x Daytona 500 champion (1985, 1987) - 16x Most Popular driver - set the fastest qualifying speed ever recorded in Nascar at around 212 MPH
