Mark Guiliana's Beat Music (Live) | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA

- Mark Guiliana is a drummer renowned for his chameleon-like ways with pulse - whether he's leading his acoustic jazz quartet, playing in a duo with Brad Mehldau or providing the back beat behind David Bowie's final album, Blackstar. Now, Guiliana is in another mutation mode, shifting his focus from acoustic jazz sounds to explore an exciting realm of electro-jazz.
In this concert film from Rough Trade in New York City, the multi-faceted artist celebrates the release of Beat Music! Beat Music! Beat Music! (Motéma Music). The show, which kicked off a European tour, featured the psychedelic musical interplay of BIGYUKI and Nick Semrad on synthesizers, Chris Morrissey on electric bass, and Guiliana on electronics and drums. This special performance features long-time co-Bowie conspirator Jason Lindner on the melodica.
Guiliana started Beat Music in his basement in New Jersey a decade ago, as an underground, community-oriented musical experiment. The story behind this fascinating music comes alive in a new podcast episode of WBGO's The Checkout: bit.ly/2IOW6Il

The fact that this was played live blows my mind.
Nick Semrad + Synths = Gold
Electronic-space-cosmic-lo-fi jazz. Amazing!
whoever wrote youtube’s suggestions algorithm is a genius!
Haha, yeah, so good it made me think about it as a talking point
about every month I type in 'Mark Guiliana' into RUclips search... and sometimes I am very fortunate to find a new drop. !!!!!!!!
ROAST reminds me of the great 70´s band, Gentle Giant! put a BIG smile on my face !!! Great music here!
wow I was just thinking the same! Really sounds a bit like a modern version of their stuff, only thing missing is the vocal arrangements :D
Nerve fan here, found this through 80/20 drummer, i feel blessed :))

we need a nerve + guiliana band tour
Love this live alived!! All the kind of Music vibes I enjoy!!! Many thanks guys!!
Just saw this live, literally one of the best shows I've ever seen. Some of the more inaccessible beats I watched here and skipped over took on a whole different shape live, with all the improvisation and musicianship, then turned into my favorite songs. WOW
37:00 Words can‘t describe how much this solo gives me.
Sounds like Bach at certain moments
@@MRtrollpinguin sure does!
I luv the way you make music, thanks for exist Mr Guiliana...
It is so great, that this wonderful concert comes in such a good quality! I´m very greatful - thanks JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA!! 💛🖤💛
This is gold, this is magic.
Have witnessed the show and am very happy to have this video to recall it.
OH MY, LORD! ....you guys are on a WHOLE different level! Every damn thing was right on the beat...especially at the halfway mark, it's like chaos itself was arranged down the 32nd note. Serious respect from this dude right here! Absolutely GORGEOUS!!!
It seems to me that it is not without reason that they reached an agreement musically with Brad Mehldau ;-)
Jason Lindner is channelling his inner snake charmer :D A great concert and a great album!
Wowwww what an amazing show!!! One of the many things I love about Mark Guiliana´s drumming is his intensity, watch him go completely nuts at 1:05:05 !! looking forward to see them live tomorrow
Absurdly dope... Keep on like this Mark!
Wow! Inspiring music. You guys are brilliant! Bravo 👏👏👏
Big Yuki is on all Analog Synths and Nick Semrad is on all digital synths
18:22 Elvin's voice!
Almost came out to this show... kicking myself. This is so so ill !!
Im glad I found this...this is beyond epic..
Thank you sooo much for this ! ❤️
Went last januari too Nu Blu in NY winter jazzfest. it was great with Nate Smith , Mark Guiliana, Yea Boyyyy etc great beautyfull music
I am listenting to this while I am working and without even realizing I am floating into space. This sound is dope! See you in Napoli, Mark. It's gonna be bellissimo at Bellini!
No you aren't
This is amazing and makes me want to put down my phone and play
this is so awesome, it's performances like these that inspired 'smallsongs' !
First time seeing this, but this is my instant favourite band!!
FUckkkkkk yeah chris is feelin it. basslines are CASH
so, he is wealthy?
I was there. This video can't really do it justice.
It's certainly doing something. This is one of the most insane live concerts I've ever seen and I WASN'T there.
It only sounds good cuz of the thousands of dollars in equipment bud. If you heard they're true abilities you would not i repeat WOULD NOT be a fan. Equipment and processed sounds like these instruments are ruining music
@@michaelalvarado6178 hahahaha. Bruh, please.
@@michaelalvarado6178 Are you kidding me? All of these cats are killin' musicians.
Mark Guiliana is easily one of the top modern drummers. His technique is absolutely immense and, more importantly, is very tasteful.
Chris Morrisey is also a monster on bass, both electric and upright and has no problem swingin' hard in an acoustic setting.
You might want to consider actually checking out Guiliana's acoustic music as well as his work as a sideman before spitting off something so erroneous and condescending.
@@michaelalvarado6178 The drummer just played with one of the biggest jazz name aka Avishai Cohen, and for years. Go clean your ears !
That keyboard solo. Beautiful.
Which one?😂
incredible drummer and incredible musician.
first time I see a reface CS in a professional environment
Ikr? That kinda suprised me too.
Watched the live stream of this. Time to give it another listen.
This was beyond epic!
I hope one day you come to Argentina
the synth solo starting at 37:00 changed my life
Mine too! I think it's the most beautiful solo i've ever heard!
Organ-ish, right?
@@TheHellpoy Reminds me of Bach's organ works. But I am not much of an expert.
Was that solo and the subsequent music from any particular song?
still the best thing of the last 10 years
Incredible! Absolutely genial!!
What a brilliant set 🤘🏼🤘🏼
HOLY SHIT bloom nearly brought me to tears
Gabriel Joseph I’m with you.
possibly one of the best random encounters
So good! Chris Morrissey!!!
That is beyond words!!

Wow amazing! Electro-prog-fusion is great!
The only reason they went on the "electro prog fusion" music route is cuz they weren't talented enough to go on the music music route lol. This is not good guys c'mon!
@@michaelalvarado6178 do you even fucking know who Mark Guiliana is or are you just that stupid? Go back to your basement where no one knows about you.
@@michaelalvarado6178 haha poor frustrated man, I'm sorry for you.
amazing preferences! love it
That futuristic reggae vibe.
genius at work!
this felt like a jazzy ratatat at some point which was a lovely throwback
The ending of HUMAN is so sublime 😭
Cool stuff! Good luck at the Grammys, if I could vote I'd vote for you! :-)
This music goes down pretty well with a couple,of good quality Sauvignon Blanc wines in summer.
seriously though , excellent music
I'd love to see Mark Guiliana working with Alfa Mist, Yussef Dayes, Mansur Brown and Rocco Palladino from the UK!
Funny coincidence, I just came here after listening to Antiphon!
Sik!.. glad I found you legends
ROAST! Wow what a song
This is some fire right here.
LOVE IT!
This music made my girlfriend finally let me put it in the backdoor! Thank you guys!!
What do you mean?
Bravo!
Underrated comment bro
Incredible
Wow I didn't expect that but congratulations
In dutch !!!!!
Niet normaal!!!!!!
1e track KILLER SKILS
man.... no wonder David Bowie used this drummer for his last album Blackstar, a very jazzy influenced drummer without the fear of touching the electronic realm
that + his laser precision time-keeping - the man is a living beat machine. fantastic performance by all of them. stellar musicians
thanks
Isso é música intergaláctica, estive procurando por isso já faz um tempo
Very strange. Very good.
this lot are the dopest shit I've heard in a long time
Oh God. I have to start all over again. Just like the first time I listened to Charles Ives. This is going to take a while.
Start at 16:20 and watch for 2-3 minutes if you want to get 80% of the vibe in 20% of the time
not traditional inspiration I got under my skin fron this awesome performance! (y)
Bom pra carambaaaaaa ....Respect buddddd
Those drum sticks look really cool.
This is a group full of magicians. What a performance!
@16:22 that song transition was nuts 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Attention: Pure Fxxxing Sick Dope eom!
Me not listening : "This will be some nice background music"
Me listening : "How is it possible that the snare be the backbeat and the down beat at the same time?FNDJKZ.SFHJGK;J"
could you please point at a time frame of this? Wanna hear it :) (I'm not a trained drummer)
4:11?
@@jorgejuarez8928 it'll be impossible to point out, everybody hears different things, just be aware that some people aren't used to rhythms that aren't 4/4 or 3/4, so thay might explain rhythm in their own terms
Very crazy soun man!!
BATERO IMPRESIONANTE!!!
Amazing 💪👌
Yeah buddy 🔥🔥🔥
It's all awesome, but di reggae bit was hype!
autentic original extraordinary modern music special for Arktik or Island...
DOPE!
Reminds me of that episode of Friends where Ross plays keyboard in front of everyone for the first time.
Lovely.
Sometimes I get all jaded and gloomy when Im sorta tired of the billion things Ive heard and having trouble finding something new and chill-inducing…. Right then something like this seems to come along. They are sorcerers. This is a gift to humankind.
I came here to hear Roast, and was blown away. Wow, what a concert... Wish I was there...
Blissed out Beat peaces peaces peace!
