The idea of swinging into resistance dates back to a 1933 book called “Down To Scratch” by British teacher Abe Mitchell. Hogan build his swing around that concept, swinging hips into resistance of squared back foot to straighten and torque the back leg, the same thing Rory does. Hogan’s swing style was conventional wisdom until Jack and Arnie came on the scene in the 60s. Jack was all about keeping everything loose and raising up the front foot like Bobby Jones to turn the hips but only after turning shoulders past hips, the opposite of Hogan’s backswing. Tiger in his early days popularized the X factor swing in which hip turn was restricted and shoulder turn around hips maximized. But that, as he discovered, wrecks the back over the long haul. Now many of the pros, like Rory, are gravitating back to a Hogan style swing.

Well said Martin. Thank you for heaving the guts to point out that every movement we do is always in context with our environment and is made to solve a unique problem. I hope golf lessons will return to the course at least half of the time. Its not the swinging skills influencing our game, its the playing skills influencing the quality of our swings... wish you the best. Greetings from germany
