been with AFI from the beginning and theyve changed with every album and always nailed it and this is the same. Very new wavy but has classic AFI vibes. i love it
teen music; the more I grow up the more cringey it sounds; especially the way he sings. Very little difference with "butt rock"; but black sails is still kind of ok
I stopped listening to anything new after I heard Miss Murder. 🤮 Perhaps I should go back and check some stuff they've made in the last 15 years, I prefer punk AFI.

I love the direction they took with this album. Some of it almost sounds new wave to me instrumental wise. I think what I like most is that the songwriting really makes Davey's singing the focal point. I really liked the Blood Album but surprisingly I think I already like Bodies better🥰 Davey just sounds so damn good and the rhythm section is tight as hell.
Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes came out when I was in junior high and I loved it… That, along with The Misfits, was my intro to punk, and I’ve bled it ever since. Surprisingly, as much as I’ve always hated “pop punk” and emo especially, I’ve loved every album AFI has dropped. They have such a skill for melody… Burials and The Blood Album seriously blew me away, so I’m so stoked that this record and the Missing Man EP continued to build off those.
if that was your first exposure to AFI then youre in for a treat. they have a back catalogue that goes back a long way with amazing songs. every album is different but great
In a way they have the same evolution. The Cure's Three Imaginary Boys, was more like a punk album. The only difference is AFI was around when Punk became more mainstream back on the Nitro record label with The Offspring. If you put aside the horror punk era of AFI, and trust me, I'm not meaning that insultingly, because it too was amazing! They did kinda progess similarly to The Cure.
Love the 80s post punk vibes , some songs like begging for trouble sound generic but there are also some gems like far too now, dulcería, back from the flesh, tied to a tree ❤
I don't hate the vision of this album. I just think it's overly tamed to the point of not even remembering what song I was listening, since they all have the same vibe. Past albums they always wore their inspirations in their heart but gave it an original spin that you can still identify it was AFI. Each song had a very nuance sound and a different emotion to decipher, this album not so much.
I agree that on previous albums each song really had its own feeling and direction. But I wouldn't say this album was tamed or monotonous. I can distinctly tell each song from the next. They do seem to be more focused in on a singular direction with this album though. So I can see that. But I do enjoy that quality of this album.
I’ve always thought the follow up to Blood Album was going to be very similar to DU. Glad I wasnt the only one to see it that way! Dulceria is the new Miss Murder, taking the same position in the tracklist as well!

Can you hear that? The rumbling in the distance? Getting louder... Thousands upon thousands of charging footsteps... They are coming... You can already hear the chorus of "This album is Garbage". The old AFI fans upset because the band isn't making music identical to what they enjoyed 20-30 years ago.
No one is saying that tho, they all saying it's a bit tame compared to their previous work which pulled from different emotions. Sure you'll get the boomer hardcore kids wanting the old era, but this album is just meh. For awhile AFI have just been coasting releasing hits or misses.

Not quite Black Sails or Art of Drowning, or the earlier SYMAOYE or ATASF, but I like it a lot better than the emo direction they went with Crash Love after Decemberunderground. If they went back to their So Cal skater punk (yes I know they are from Uriah) roots and did an album or two like the late 90s to early 2000s, it would fly off the shelf with us old school AFI fans.
I dont think they will ever be able to top Black Sails and Art of Drowning.....They were absolute Master Pieces. Still 2 of my favorite albums of all time. But you arer completely right late 90's early 2000's AFI was best AFI and Yes I long for a return to that form.

Well, I ripped Dulceria a new a-hole on my review of it but after listening to it a few more times... Nope= Still Sucks. Tied to a tree= also Sucks! I have Also been with them from the beginning, but the 'punk' stuff wasn't as impressive as the stuff after. I liked how album kind of had a color and that color kind of represented what they were going for, sound wise. Crash Love will always be my Fav though DUG was totally awesome to or STS. I even liked their murky Black album. Uh, this is ok. After they put out their little Missing Man EP I was looking forward to hearing from them. I just happened to randomly check what was up with them, and than this album, and it's been out, lol. It's alright. I don't love it- I don't hate it. This is the only time I have ever said this about a bands album= The Bass on this is really fucking amazing. I don't even LIKE bass, ugh, I'm a treble guy, for sure. Also= that the band can keep composing cool shit after all these years= mind blowing. I still think the music on the album is almost otherworldly. I just feel like the, idk, the songs don't fit the music. Like they are different and not very cohesive. I'm not sure what they were going for on this. It'll be super interesting what they make after this though. I think Davey is uber creative. Black Audio is cool as F, I even was bummed Dream Car didn't make much of a splash as I thought it was super great. Anywho, I'll digest this over the next few weeks and see how much of a spin I give it. Thanks, always appreciate you making music.

Still my least favorite AFI record but Twisted Tongues, Dulceria, On Your Back, and Begging for Trouble have found their way to many repeat listens. I do hope the next record they release is more in the vein of the Missing Man ep stuff like Get Dark and Trashbat.
I respect maturing, trying new things, and evolving musically... but the older albums, if you made a line of the energy levels, it'd be mountain peaks... the newer albums always sound like a straight line to me, gentle hills. If I paid full price for a CD back in the day and found out it was only 36 minutes long, I'd feel disappointed. I'll always like this band to some extent, but I don't get life force from their music anymore.
They've gotten tamed. What's funny is that so many of their B sides sound so much fucking better then their album songs that sound like fillers. Maybe this is me overthinking it, but I wonder if they put their better songs at the B side just so fans can pay extras, that's a dick move lol.

looking tragic is a great song, dulceria is probably my favorite, but yeah, i kind of agree. Death of the party is hands down the weakest vocals and instrumental on the album, just a very dull , robotic track.

If you're a real hardcore fan you can still find the Hot Topic-only booklet that they sold for the album that contained a copy of their short film, some random music videos, artwork, lyrics, etc; wish I still had mine from 2009 :-(

I don't think their music exploits all of their abilities. None of these songs show off Jades guitar talent and Davey is becoming less dynamic in his vocal range. I am a believer that sing the sorrow was the last of the "true" afi. It had so much range from vocals to instrumentals. Everything from rock, ballad, a mix of electronic in several songs. From Davey you got melodies, emotion, and the very unique scream of his. Everyone has opinions though. That's why our world is great. I know some love the new take they have. I just miss feeling all the emotions their music used to give me. This is just my outlook. I don't expect everyone to agree nor like it. I do have the freedom to express it though, and am thankful I can.
