When Chyler (Lexi) decided it was time for her to leave the show Eric (Mark) also decided to leave because he didn't think it was right to continue Mark's story without Lexi, so they killed his character too so that Mark and Lexi could still have their happy(ish) ending together in the afterlife. But damn was it heartbreaking, 12 years later and we're still collectively broken from Mark and Lexi's deaths
Mark actually did not want to leave the show, and he didn’t have an issue with his contract- his character was written off of the show. Many feel this could have been avoided by him had he not been going through major addition problems at the time.
To make it even worse Shonda had PROMISED the fans that Mark and Lexie were endgame and they were gonna get their happy ending. And we fans HELD into that promise and were sure she was gonna swoop in with a miracle and save them both and then the season premiered to THIS! To say we as a fandom were devastated and never trusted her again is an understatement. People are still mourning the death of Mark and Lexi even this many years after the fact

EDIT 2: Honestly, the dissocation after season 8 is also how it was for me - it took some time to process the whole thing and meanwhile the early Season 9 episodes... super hard to connect fully with,
One great thing about this show that is hardly talked about is the soundtrack. It's got some fire songs like, ''Into you'' by Ingrid Michaelson which is actually on this episode, I think. If you wanna take a few hours to brood or have a good cry to clear the sinuses and release some stress and toxins, Gey's Anatomy has some gems.
Bailey being BCB had me laughing so hard,Christina being in Minnesota made sense,but I love her,and want her in Seattle with Mer,i do find funny that Feeney tries to steal her surgery,and like everyone is Ok with those things there.

The actor who played mark recently said they didn't write him back in because he was struggling with addiction at the time. Not sure about lexie but he said they just didn't keep him. He also had other opportunities.

The way i watched the trailer for 8x24 back then and thought "oh so thats how mark and lexie are going to get back together. A bit dramatic but hey" just to then loose my 2 favs in 2 Episodes 😭 and even tho i loved mark and lexie as characters and outside of the relationship, i'm glad that they went this route. I just cant imagine mark beinh truly happy without her. Especially after all the guilt of not telling her. All the tragedy was heartbreaking, but that was kinda their thing 😭 also i read that the other option would have been that mark would leave the show and addison would he his endgame. And that would have felt wrong. It was heartbreaking but at least they ended up together
Tbh Grey's made us very well-equipped for the shitshow that real-life all over the world has become in the last 5-ish years - so as they say, with every cloud there's a silver lining, I guess 🥲
Eric Dane has said in interviews that, unfortunately, at that point he was in the grips of a prescription painkiller addiction (I think you commented on a S8 vid that he looked skinny). It got to the point where he just wasn't really doing the job, he was unreliable and was costing the show a lot of money and they decided to let him go. I think he got sober again after leaving Grey's and he's doing well now (haven't watched Euphoria because its themes reflecting mental illness hit a little too close to home).
I know this is so far from the things that are happening in this episode but I've always wondered how is it a cold snow storm where Cristina is in Minnesota but sunny and summery in Ohio where April's family's farm is lol I'm from Toronto but we get the same weather as the Midwest typically so I'm confused how Minnesota and Ohio would have such a drastic difference in weather lol and I think about this every time I've watched this episode lol

Yeah, I was so pissed I stopped watching Grey's when this was airing. Lexie and Mark were my favourite characters at the time and I was rioting for them so bad. I was pissed off for days after this premiere. 😂
It seems like U missed one or two episodes 🤔this episode is not right after the plane crash. Arizona struggles to cope with the fact that she may lose her leg so she makes Callie promises to save it, U see Callie trying to save Arizonas leg but she couldn’t. U missed that drama.
