The universe rested upon the back of the first Turtle of Time. That turtle stood atop a second turtle, which stood upon a third turtle, and so on. The Turtles of Time were peaceful entities with no way of defending themselves against the comming goopocalypse.
It was a tasty feast...

One could say the message in Hawkins' story is some people are not able to process information. As a solution they cling themselves onto simplified stories. When asked to explain how their model of thought works within observations and natural laws, these people may divert the topic or give a nonsensical and baseless answer - which all the same can sound 'logical' enough to the same kind of people who also aren't exorbitantly gifted.
